I love the self checkout lanes, when I go to the grocery store for a last minute item.

 

It's the people using them that annoy me.  It clearly says 10 items or less.  Not 11.  Not 10 of the same item, plus 10 other items.  It's 10 items period!

 

Self-checkout is Ok, but I still like interacting w/people. I don't get to talk to a lot of people so I take what I can get.

I *hate* the self checkout lanes.

(1) the automated voice is loud enough to audiably contact the international space station.

(2) the barcode scanner has never been cleaned.

(3) every single person in line is purchasing something age restricted, or requiring store assistance. That means a 10 minute wait for someone to come over and swipe through the 80 year old woman buying robatussin.

(4) the touch screen responds nearly as fast as a 1982 ASCII text screen ATM.

 

All I know is at 11 pm at the giant eagle in rocky river, 4 self checkout lines are slower than 1 live register.

 

I don't mind self-checkout lanes that much; I've gotten used to them. They're still kind of a novelty in NYC. In my local supermarket (Key Food--a NY chain), the self-scanners don't work as fast as the ones the cashiers use, so I always face some kind of technical glitch requiring the assistance of an employee who's always on duty to "help" out the self-checkout patrons, defeating the whole point of doing it yourself (to say nothing of the fact that only 2 out of 4 stations are in service at any given time)!! The ones in CVS (the only other stores in Manhattan which appear to have them) work fine.

I love the self-checkout.  Every time I've been in line with a cashier in the last few years they are complaining or blabbing to the bagger or the cashier next to them about something -their hours, when their break is, their boyfriend, what they're doing after work, and I DON'T CARE.  I don't find them to be any quicker than the self-checkout.

At Heinen's I wouldn't worry. At Macy's, Sak's, Bloomingdale's... that's where you need to worry.

I greatly prefer the self-checkout.  It's faster, and the line is generally smaller.

CSU actually suggested to me that I take language classes at CCC because they're cheaper and easier to schedule around than CSU undergrad offerings.  But I had no intention of transferring these credits in, which may have been the difference.

Well my issue is this. I'm taking a math class at OSU main campus, which I need to graduate (I failed the same class last semester). I wanted to take German because I love all things German and also so I would be able to keep my financial aid. But my advisor in Urban said I would have to take it at a 4 yr school and not CSCC because I'm a senior. Unfortunately, OSU only offers Ger 102 at this point, the same as CSU. Right now I'm doing a self taught sort of thing with books and CDs. Hopefully it helps!

Never had problems with self checkout.  Even purchasing age restricted items.  I just raise my hand and they do something at their terminal that lets me advance.  The Unlimited item self checkouts are kind of annoying though.  They are really only intended for two people making one purchase.  One bags items while the other scans.  When there's just one person, everything gets all backed up.

It has plenty of cooling with big, quiet fans, luxury-car finish, clear side-panel, and all the interior brackets and slots fit perfectly with no forcing or jiggering. I have a 500W Ultra power supply and a pair of WD Raptor 10,000rpm SATA drives as RAID 0 for my Drive C:. My data drive is a separate 500GB SATA drive. I can reuse all that stuff.

 

I've just started browsing specs and I need to bring myself back up to date, but so far the AMD mobo that has caught my eye is the Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3HP, at $85.99. It has an ATI Radeon HD 3200 video chipset onboard, and the capability to handle more CPU and RAM than I can ever use up, along with enough USB ports to accomodate all my peripheral toys.

Two things I want to do this year. Buy a good entry level SLR and begin photographing in earnest (no shutter lag = less blurry pictures of kids for one thing), and 2) build my own computer to use primarily as a media center for my TV. A good friend did this, and uses it as his central command for music, movies (downloads his netflix to it), and his pictures.

 

As an added challenge, I am curious if anyone is comfortable with linux and if that is an O/S that lends itself to media driven applications.

Eh, 55F in my apartment this morning. I couldn't keep it much higher than 60F yesterday due to my tall ceilings, windows and skylight. Of course, during the summer, if it's over 90F, I can't keep my apartment from dipping below 85F.

The living room in my house has vaulted ceilings that are pretty high, so that room is always chilly.  My whole house was cold this morning lol.  Even the head unit on my car stereo was acting weird because of the cold.

Yeah my car didn't start the first time I tried. I also had left over wiper fluid in there from the summer, so I can't wash my windshield until it thaws haha.

So here I sit in the heart of wonderful urban Ann Arbor, MI.  A city with 115,000 people and restaurants from practically every country in the world.  3 whole foods  stores, 2 trader joes, 1 great urban market, and of course your obligatory 4 starbucks within a 6 block radius.  I need a snow shovel.  But I cannot obtain said item here in the city because the local hardware stores have been replaced by micro breweries or hookah shops.  Basic needs crisis.  Now I have to take the bus out to the suburbs to Home depot just so I can bring back the shovel and liberate my car from the streets Ann Arbor chooses not to clear.....because salting is not environmentally friendly!!!  :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip:

I had it, but it was a long time ago, when I was a whippersnapper about your age. The doctor told me to not go anywhere or exert myself unnecesscarily, stay home, eat, rest, for two weeks and then come back. I had a second-floor apartment, and just climbing a flight of stairs slowly left me winded.

 

I had just started a new, very good office job, and told her I couldn't possibly miss that much work starting off as a probationary hire. She said, OK, go to work, but drive, don't walk. Aside from time to eat, don't do anything else except rest and sleep. It was a couple of months before I started to feel half decent again.

 

I don't think the treatment has changed since then, and there's no effective medication that I know of except that sometimes a doctor will prescribe antibiotics to try to head off any secondary infections that could be very dangerous when your body's defenses are knocked down. I think it's also very important to avoid strenuous activity or pushing yourself because one very dangerous complication from that can be a ruptured spleen. Mono is not to be taken lightly.
