March 5, 200916 yr ^^^ Haha, sorry about that. Off topic: I'm (probably) going to visit Cincy next week for spring break and while I'm there I'll be exploring OTR left and right. I'll only visit during the day, BUT I'm not sure where to park. The car I'll be in is a Zipcar, so it's got a GIANT "Z" on the side and it's an easy target. Do you think I'll have a problem at the lots around Findlay? This will be a week day, so I'm assuming that the crowds will be considerably less than the last time I was there. Also, if I want to really explore Washington Park and the Gateway Quarter...are there still blocks of Republic to avoid? I know the usual drill and I've been there before, but it's been over a year and I'm sure the neighborhood has changed a lot. Thoughts?
March 5, 200916 yr Ahh, memories... It's hard to move on, isn't it? When we'll be cleaning up the mess for years, yes it is. Also, it's a damn well done bit of parody.
March 5, 200916 yr ProkNo5 is stalking urbanohio members again. Look out! LOL Haha, good call. Except the gays down in Cincy aren't as vocal and stalkable as you and MayDay. I am looking for a couch though  if anyone's offering. I was going to find one via CouchSurfing, but one night on and UrbanOhio couch is worth a lifetime of City-Data couches. PS - Thanks again Guv

I wouldn't worry about your car if you're actually IN the Findlay Market lots, and close to the market. My dad drives a 5 series BMW and he goes to Findlay Market fairly often and has never had a problem. If you park on the street though, just be careful and make sure you don't leave any valuables in sight. If you're walking around the Gateway and Washington Park during a week day, I would say you're pretty much safe during the day. Of course, normal street smarts are required, especially on parts of Republic, but I've done it before, and had no problems. Now, I am not down there on a daily basis, so my experiences could be unique, but I would say during the day, you're fine.

I'll only visit during the day, BUT I'm not sure where to park. For some reason I thought you lived in Cincy? Otr no longer leads the city as the most "sketchy" neighborhood ... I wouldn't worry about it. You can even park Downtown and just walk across Central Pkwy. The car I'll be in is a Zipcar, so it's got a GIANT "Z" on the side and it's an easy target. Do you think I'll have a problem at the lots around Findlay? This will be a week day, so I'm assuming that the crowds will be considerably less than the last time I was there. Don't worry about the car, seriously... Or being a target! Findlay's parking lot is especially safe. Yes, the weekends are busier for Findlay. During the workweek, there are also markets open on Court St., so this takes away from Findlay. Also, if I want to really explore Washington Park and the Gateway Quarter...are there still blocks of Republic to avoid? Gateway Qtr. is fine, Washington Park is where you use your streetsmarts (common sense). I know the usual drill and I've been there before, but it's been over a year and I'm sure the neighborhood has changed a lot. Thoughts? It has changed tremendously. I think you'll be surprised. Have fun!

My (semi-educated) vote's on Avondale or Lower Price Hill...but do tell (or point me to a thread) I would say Avondale, Bond Hill, maybe parts of Walnut Hills? OTR is still pretty bad in parts, though. And a lot of the troubles that were caused in OTR were by people living in other neighborhoods and coming down to OTR to sell drugs or just hang out. That's why when there are murders in OTR the news reports often say "A Walnut Hills/Evanston/Avodale/Bond Hill man was killed today in OTR...".
March 6, 200916 yr I totally missed walking by the shooting on Main Street downtown on Monday because ColDayMan wanted to use the skywalks.

Note: This is a completely biased opinion.
March 6, 200916 yr If your goal is to not be able to expand the camera's range and purchase lenses that could suit future needs, then the Sony Cybershot HX1 is comparable to other point-and-shoot's from Nikon and Canon. If you are looking for a Digital SLR, then Nikon and Canon will be your best bet by far.

March 6, 200916 yr Co. shutdown leaves gift certificates in question By James Hannah, AP, March 5, 2009 DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - A company that sold gift certificates to businesses and individuals around the U.S. has shut down, leaving thousands to wonder if unredeemed certificates for restaurants and stores are now worthless. CertifiChecks Inc., which operated in 47 states, says it is filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. It hasn't made clear whether it will honor the unredeemed gift certificates. Many businesses and chambers of commerce around the U.S. promoted the Dayton-based company by offering gift certificates worth up to $100 that were redeemable at local businesses.
March 6, 200916 yr Scientists Allege Fraud in 1984 HIV/AIDS Papers Friday, March 06, 2009 by: David Gutierrez, staff writer (NaturalNews) Thirty-seven legal, medical and research professionals have sent a letter to the journal Science, asking it to officially retract the original four papers making the case for HIV as the cause of AIDS. According to the letter's authors, widespread evidence has now emerged that the studies were not only poorly carried out, but that their results were falsified. In 1984, Robert Gallo published four articles in Science, claiming that he had isolated the HIV virus and concluding that it was the "probable cause of AIDS." Investigative journalist Janine Roberts has discovered, however, that Gallo made last-minute alterations to the paper and its results. http://www.naturalnews.com/025787.html

March 7, 200916 yr From Toplessrobot.com: I have no idea who Le Sexoflex are. Are they a real band? A fake band? A nerd band? No clue. I do, however, know that they are geniuses, and they are my heroes. Because they have crafted a song all about Dragon*Con, which contains the lines "Frodo Baggins / Your d**k be draggin' / All over the floor" and "My mom drove me all the way from Tuscon," and THOSE AREN'T EVEN THE BEST LINES. This song is as filthy as it is nerdy, and it's incredibly filthy, so if you're stuck at work where you shouldn't play such things, you should probably turn it up and play it anyways, because there's no job or paycheck that's possibly worth missing the glory of the "Marriott Cock Squat" for even a second. I don't ask you guys for much, but please, PLEASE -- tell everyone you know about the majesty and the glory of this video. This deserves to be seen everywhere by everyone. I thank TR reader Thomas for bringing it into my life. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to watch it several hundred more times.

March 7, 200916 yr BPA Found In Pop Cans Thursday March 5, 2009 CityNews.ca Staff It turns out a cold drink isn't the only thing in your pop can. A Health Canada study found the estrogen-mimicking chemical bisphenol-A in the vast majority of canned beverages - 69 of 72 of those tested contained residues. The report appeared last month in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry and included some 84 per cent of canned soft drinks sold in Canada. http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_32643.aspx
March 7, 200916 yr manliness is next to godliness  NYC is Not So Manly NYC is Not So Manly Put down that silly book and stop ironing that tight-fit v-neck for a moment, lads, and know this: you're now a part of the least manliest city in the nation, according to some list. The #1 spot on the "America's Manliest Cities" index went to Nashville (home to an unhealthy number of NASCAR enthusiasts), with NYC falling right at the very bottom. They report, "Despite high ratings in the bowling category, New York City ranks 50th out of 50 in the study due to low scores in manly indicators such as fishing, home improvement and drag racing." Cities that got higher rankings did so through high purchases of salty snacks, number of hardware stores, monster truck rallies and, of course, sports bars. Fun trick: if you flip the list upside down you'll get the America's Most Educated Cities list, and hey, we're #1! [via Village Voice] http://gothamist.com/2009/03/06/nyc_is_not_so_manly.php
March 9, 200916 yr Ok, question for you guys. Is it tacky to give a used book as a present? I have a book in mind that I'd like to give to a friend for her birthday that has been sitting on my shelf for awhile now. I bought it new and read it, I don't re-read books, and I think my friend would like it and it's doing me no good sitting on my shelf. She has a birthday coming up. The book is in "like new" condition but I wouldn't try to pass it off as new, I would tell her it was mine and I was giving it to her as a gift. Times are really tight financially (we are waiting to find out if mr. rockandroller gets laid off this week, or perhaps is forced to go to PT instead of FT) and I don't want to order it new as that would be pretty costly with shipping (it's not available in local stores) and ordering it used seems silly when I have a perfectly good copy I could give her. But is that tacky? If it is, maybe I will try to make her some bread or something instead, but I wanted to ask.
March 9, 200916 yr I don't think that it is tacky, but maybe you should give her a gift to go along with the book (like buy her lunch or something).

I don't think it's tacky if you put a personal note with it explaining specifically why you're giving her this book. Do it over lunch/dinner.
March 9, 200916 yr I think a used book is a great gift, assuming that it's a nice copy (definitely not a paperback) and a good book. Even better, write her a note in the book's binding, "I treasure your friendship, yada, yada", or, "this is a book that strengthens my soul and sh-t". You get the picture.
March 9, 200916 yr I don't think that it is tacky, but maybe you should give her a gift to go along with the book (like buy her lunch or something). Yeah, but the point is I really cannot afford to take her out right now, that's kind of the point. If I could, I would just take her out and not even worry about giving her the book. I seriously would make a card for her out of plain paper at this point instead of buying one; if we are close to mr. losing his job, I can't be taking people out for lunch or dinner and buying them $3 greeting cards on top of it.

March 9, 200916 yr Thanks. I sometimes copy down a poem I think they would like and give that to them in lieu of a card. I just didn't want to seem like a cheap-ass - hey, here's a used book for you, happy birthday. You know?
March 9, 200916 yr I've found that *good* friends are surprisingly understanding of my situation. I think the book, along with a personalized note that ties into your friendship would be just fine. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
March 9, 200916 yr Thx. She's not the judgmental type so I think it would be well received, but I just wanted to get another perspective in case it was seriously tacky or rude.

March 9, 200916 yr I've done it. The spirit of the gift is more important than the cost. Besides, my friends know how I value and hoard books and what a significant occasion it is when I give one away.
March 11, 200916 yr So early this morning around 1:00 I drove myself to the emergency room with horrible pain from my left kidney. Turns out I had a kidney stone. What a horrible, horrible experience.

March 11, 200916 yr I can't wait!!! Now all we need is Coke to come out with the same thing. Also found the following web site where one can find all kinds of unique soda: http://www.thesodagallery.com/ Pepsi Throwback Enjoy Pepsi as it was meant to be made — with sugar — with Pepsi Throwback. Featuring an old-school Pepsi logo instead of the modern smiling circle that adorns current cans, the drink will be sweetened with sugar, instead of the ultra-nasty High Fructose Corn Syrup, giving you that true cola taste without the need to import. For those with more extreme tastes, Mountain Dew Throwback will also be available, retro logo intact.
March 11, 200916 yr I splurged on dairy products lately, and drank too much espresso from a machine that was in dire need of de-calcification. It was a recipe for disaster. The source couldn't be more easy to trace. I live very close to the hospital, so it was only a 3 minute drive. I couldn't drive back because of the drugs, so campus police took me back to my apartment.

March 11, 200916 yr Coke does have a similar product, but only during passover, or somewhere where you can get Mexican coke. Both are made with sugar, not corn syrup.

March 11, 200916 yr Is it as carbonated enough? If I recall Mexican coke was really flat. How could I tell you from carton to carton if something is flat or not. I have had Mexican coke and passover coke plenty of times and neither are flat. Maybe you bought really old coke from somewhere.
