June 15, 200916 yr I'm starting to wonder the same thing. Did his family and friends stage an intervention, with a nice big intervention sign? Was he forced to quit cold turkey? These are important questions that need answering.
June 15, 200916 yr I agree! I have a newborn baby and am on here more than MTS lately, where the hell is he?
June 16, 200916 yr I think I saw him (or someone pretending to be him...hmmm) appear briefly in the active users list one time last week, so at least he wasn't on that ill-fated Air France plane! http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
June 16, 200916 yr When do we send out a search party for MTS?? He was probably fired from work. As much as he's on here, I know I'd fire his a$$.

June 16, 200916 yr Anyone taken the oral assessment for the Foreign Service Test? I am taking mine next Monday and would be grateful if anyone had any pointers. I am 99.9% sure I am not going to go through with it even if I pass, but I would love to have the option.

June 24, 200915 yr So it appears my university doesn't want me anymore. I was at Ann Arbor's summer festival and decided to get a beverage (cheaper from the machines) around 10:00 pm. The university buildings lock at night, but I had my student ID. I went to swipe it and....ACCESS DENIED! Since I just graduated, it appears they've turned it off. $100,000, two degrees, and being employed with the U for two years you'd AT LEAST think they'd give me night access to buildings on campus for a few more years. :x
June 24, 200915 yr $4 a month or $40/year isn't bad.. even for a student. And as much as I'm on here... it's worth it
June 24, 200915 yr $4 a month or $40/year isn't bad.. even for a student. And as much as I'm on here... it's worth it I dunno, $40 gets you about 80 Bürger Beers... in that perspective it is a tougher choice.

June 25, 200915 yr Mt Elliot/Palmer in Detroit.....there's nothing there except for Packard Plant. Theoretically if the (shutting down vacated parts of cities) plan works itself out, I suppose we could do without this neighborhood completely since there's maybe 4 houses/block. Crime may move elsewhere, but then again you have cops patrolling less areas.

Yes, yes it has! http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,3152.1230.html And a few Cincinnati bloggers have done an excellent job of shooting down the very poor methodolgy used by that website... The place they picked is mostly vacant, and is thus used by criminals for illicit activity quite often, and because there are few residents crimes per population = bad.
June 25, 200915 yr can you imagine? think of the befuddled tourists....! :-o looks like they ended up in the east ny industrial park you can see in this thread i did last february: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,18472.0.html French Tourists Get High-Speed "Hell Ride" In Van From JFK Five French tourists got dragged on a crazy, high-speed chase after getting into an unlicensed livery van at JFK yesterday. The unwanted excitement started around 11 a.m. after Port Authority police spotted Ian McFarland, 57, hustling the newly-arrived French visitors from the Air France terminal to an unauthorized van. According to the Post, Officer Michael Bestany recognized McFarland as a "longtime steerer" of travelers to the illegal vans, and when Bestany reached into the vehicle to grab the keys, driver Khaalis Preacher floored it, knocking Bestany to the pavement, injuring his shoulder and knee. Captive tourist Gwen Dulugat, who injured her arm while trying to jump from the moving van, describes the high-speed chase that ensued: "It went very, very fast. We're going zoom, zoom, zoom. The police were fantastic. They were behind us all the time." Preacher led cops to East New York, where he finally crashed through the mechanical gate arm of a US Postal Service facility. The Post got great photos of the police, guns drawn, chasing down the two suspects and arresting them; the other tourists escaped with no injuries and an ultimate New York story. http://gothamist.com/2009/06/24/french_tourists_taken_on_high-speed.php more photos here: http://www.nypost.com/photos/galleries/news/regionalnews/pp_20090624_van/photo01.htm
June 25, 200915 yr Man that's insane. I bet those tourists had an interesting story to tell when they got back home. I am noticing more and more cities starting to use plain clothes police officers. It seems like a growing trend. It's weird to see it because you see a chase, with uniformed officers and their weapons drawn, and then you see a couple random and normal looking guys with weapons drawn also. I can see it during an undercover sting, but I don't see the reasoning to use them during a chase.
June 26, 200915 yr I agree with E.55 and Cedar. While in no way would I ever want to live, walk, or get gas there, countless people shoot down E.55 everyday to hop on 490 and nothing ever happens (except for the guy from Hudson who ran over the biker). In contrast, I took Eddy from Euclid during the middle of the day once and vow I will never do it again.

I agree though that I wouldn't consider this among the worst areas either, but it's not like this is a well done study anyway.

June 30, 200915 yr Does anybody use Blackle instead of Google? Its the same exact thing as Google except has a black screen instead of an all white screen. The all black screen is supposed to save energy and the site claims it has already saved 1.3 million watt hours of energy so far. http://www.blackle.com/ I will have to start using that when I browse on my 1000W PSU Desktop, on my 52" LCD screen... Honestly, I can't imagine that would have any benefit on an LCD screen (which most monitors are now) because screen black and true black are different things, and there's not really a difference in the way the screen is powered based upon color displayed. If you have an older monitor it might help a bit, though.

July 2, 200915 yr ^ Fake. Way too many of the same silver car at the bottom. Almost no semis. Too many of the black car on the lower left. Same white van twice at center.
July 2, 200915 yr ^ This looks shopped. I can tell from some of the pixels, and from seeing quite a few shops in my time. Although it does look like some of the SimCities I used to build. I was the king of sprawl.

July 2, 200915 yr ruth madoff, homeless person  U.S. Marshals Seize Madoff Penthouse Guess Ruth Madoff is on the streets—the U.S. Marshals have seized her and her husband's East 64th Street penthouse apartment. The AP reports, "U.S. Marshal Joseph Guccione said Thursday that the marshals were at the property pursuant to a court order." Newsday explains that Ruth Madoff gets $2.5 million as soon as she vacates the Upper East Side duplex, which is worth $7 million, so maybe that's why the seizure happened so soon after her agreement giving up her three homes last week. However, it's been tough for her to find an apartment—apparently landlords aren't interested in having such a notorious tenant. http://gothamist.com/2009/07/02/us_marshals_seize_madoff_penthouse.php#comments
July 2, 200915 yr Has anyone tried that new glass platform that extends out 4 feet atop the Sears in Chicago? Gotta admit, some glass elevators creep me out. If I have to look down, I want the comfort of knowing that there are steel columns supporting me lol.

If I have to look down, I want the comfort of knowing that there are steel columns supporting me lol. I can say with 100% certainty that there is no way in God's green earth you could ever drag me onto that thing. And if you did, looking down wouldn't be an issue, because I would have covered the floor with the detritus resulting from my fear induced incontinence.
July 4, 200915 yr It's just a ripoff of the glass platform in the CN Tower in Toronto. That one rocks so I'm sure the one in Chicago rocks too.
July 5, 200915 yr Umm, I hope it doesn't rock. A rocking observation platform would be scary. :-D Some people will pay extra to have the stuffing scared out of them (not me!). :|
July 5, 200915 yr I'm considering trying it tomorrow evening on my way back from Sioux falls or else I'll make a trip to Chicago sometime next week
July 9, 200915 yr Holy sh!t ... Crazy! More than 60 campers from Northeast Philadelphia were turned away from a private swim club and left to wonder if their race was the reason. http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Pool-Boots-Kids-Who-Might-Change-the-Complexion.html
