There's a nice discussion going on at the CincyPunk message boards.  A lot of the guys over there like to portray themselves as big, tough guys and are overly assertive about their masculinity.... you know the type.  But someone started talking about how stupid it is for Cincinnatians to hate on our own city, and with very few exceptions, everyone else agrees.

Here's some excerpts:

Treebeard made me think of something I hate. In general, people that think the city they live in sucks so bad. I don't think I've ever heard you say one positive thing about Cincinnati, beard. Also, you are constantly complaining about Gaslight District which is one of the nicest areas of town. I guess what I'm saying is if it sucks so bad here, gtfo????!? I like you and all but all your complaining and Cincinnati hating makes you seem like a little ungrateful ****.

I'm actually with you on this. My facebook feed is full of people whining about how bad Cincinnati is, or how Ohio or the Midwest or whatever suck so bad. I've traveled a LOT, and the thing that I've come to realize is, you may move to NYC or Chicago, but if you're a whiny ***** here, you'll be one there too. It's not where you live, it's who you are, and if you can't happy as you are, you're a ****ing idiot. You should feel lucky you don't live somewhere that REALLY sucks, where you're actually prohibited from doing rad **** like drinking or wearing what you want, or listening to music.

***** all you want, you've got it lucky, and unless you suck at EVERYTHING, you can always move, so you can go ***** about how Chicago sucks or whatever.

Seriously, it pisses me off when 20 somethings who live in a decent sized city move to New York because there's "nothing to do here".... okay... what do you like to do? See your favorite band. Go to bars.

Great. You can do the same thing in New York and just pay five times as much to do it and see less good bands all for the glory of talking about neighborhoods and the trains you can take there that no one gives a **** about by name.

Why do people keep accusing cities of looking "sterile"? What does that mean? It's too clean? It's not broken in yet?? It lacks vegetation? That word is starting to annoy me and I'm still trying to figure out why.

^ Like a hospital, not like an old bowling alley.

I think the "sterile" label (Rem Koolhaas always applies it to places like Times Square) has more to do with the look and design of a place.  You can tell it was built by likeminded people, with the same goals and philosophies, and the design is ubiquitous.  We’re applying the same strategies we’ve applied to the suburbs back to the inner city, and coating them a bit differently.  This isn’t my point of view, just something I can understand as a criticism.

This is a favorite quote of mine from a Spiegel interview, a little bit of a different perspective than mine, but interesting nevertheless:

Koolhaas: The old contrast between downtown and suburban areas is outdated.

SPIEGEL: Wait a minute, isn't the current trend moving away from suburbia and back to the city?

Koolhaas: Yes, for now. And do you know what's so ironic about that? The people from the suburbs are bringing along their suburban values: cleanliness, orderliness, safety -- dullness, in other words. As a result, urban areas are being hollowed out. Just look at Times Square in New York. No more sex shops, no drugs, no homeless people. The area is clinically clean and incredibly dull.

my problem with Spiegel's position is basically, what the h#ll does he want? You bemoan that people moved out to the suburbs. Now people are moving back into cities. Of course they're going to make them into the environment they like. You want population growth? It can't all be artists and edgy self employed architects. You have to appeal to many different groups, including <gasp> families with children. Sex shops, and drugs aren't the first thing I look for in a neighborhood.

Hey, if you can find 2,000,000 bohemians with the disposable income to repopulate a certain urban area, you can make any kind of environment you like.

Edit: one other point I want to make. Everyone uses Times Square as an example of the horrors of ....I don't even know what...gentrification? Times Square is an anomaly. It's a novelty destination. It was before its reinvention, and it is now. Nobody went to Times square to pick up their laundry or a gallon of milk. Before they want to gawk at the freaks/get their fix. Now they go to gawk at the bright lights and get their fix...of Abercrombie & Fitch. Stop using that as an example of what a 'safe, clean, typical urban environment' should be. It is not now, nor has it ever been (at least in my lifetime) an example of a typical urban neighborhood.

not to mention that artists and self employed architects along with drug addicts don't leave you with a very healthy tax base.

It's not really an anomaly...these sorts of tourist destinations are in lots of cities and they are pretty hollow and don't present the real soul of the city.

Jesus Lawd where you BEEN?

Traveling for work.  Me, my team (and my big mouth) had to put on a road show.  Since we have a lot of movies releasing (hint--hint Hairy Potter) and highly rated TV show on air and on DVD/PPV/DVR.

I've been in the states, I think a total of 6 days since the end of May.

I went something like this

NYC-CLE-CHI-DTW-CLE

CLE-LA-TOKYO-BANGKOK-HK-LAX-NYC

NYC-LON-PAR-BELGIUM-NETHERLAND-LUXEMBOURG-MILAN-NYC-CLE

CLE-TORONTO-CLE

CLE-NYC-BUENOS AIRES-SAO PAULO-HOUSTON-NOLA-LAX-CLE-NYC

In between all that, I had to prepare my nieces first annual Super Spectacular Supreme Sleepover, for 28 teenage girls.

Plus some other sh*t that was going on at home and work which made me a Super Supreme mega b*tch.

A few before, but after I gave them makeovers and tips.  They all look "haute"!

I gave them the party that I would want to have if I was a fabulous teenage girl.  Especially since I called in some favors to make it the slumber party of the decade.

Oh, and BTW, you perv, these are 14 & 15 year olds were talking about.

Seriously, where is our advanced screening of Harry Potter? I'm sure there are enough nerds enthusiasts to fill a theater from this website.

This is a very dangerous portion of I-75.  It makes a few tight turns through an urban area.  Traffic is prohibited from changing lanes and must reduce their speed to 50 mph.  Traffic does about 80 through that area regardless

Giant Rats Seize Harlem Parking Lot, Drivers Can't Get to Cars!

071509rat.jpg

The boss is never going to believe this one: A report just came in over the police scanners about an "unusual occurrence" in a parking lot at East 128th Street between Park and Lex, where police have been summoned because "people are unable to get to their cars due to 10-15 very large rats in the parking lot." And so it begins; the day we've all dreaded when a master race of rats form organized battalions to take over the city once and for all. Well, Gothamist, for one, welcomes our new rodent overlords, and we look forward to seeing them show the current administration how real rats run a city. Viva la Rat!

This is right under and just east of the MN tracks.  That area is a mess as there are several abandonded buildings.  The rats are coming from the building on Park and 125 St.  I refuse to walk on that side of the street because the rats are just that bold.

Standard Hotel Elevator Now Making All Local Stops to Hell

The Standard Hotel New York has paid artist (and Demolition Man director) Marco Brambilla and Canadian studio Crush an undisclosed sum of money to make an incredible video installation for its elevator, which gives the effect of either ascending to heaven or descending to hell, depending on which floor you're headed to. Civilization was inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy and combines looped footage from over 400 sources (including Ghostbusters, we notice). According to an artist from Crush, they're reasonably certain it won't cause motion sickness, though we're pretty sure our stomach could find a way to prove him wrong on that particular count. Even so, this is totally awesome. Click to watch a demo!

Anybody know what happened to the Infrastructurist.com blog site? Looks like he let his domain name registration expire, and now it's been snatched up by a domain squatter. Shame, because it was a great blog.

Hmm, the site is working for me.

Weird. I'm still getting the squatter's placeholder page. If changes have been made to the DNS registration, it may take a while for it to propagate throughout the internet.

I remember reading somewhere in the last year or so that the Italian population of LI was down to less than 15% from about 50% 10 years ago due to the redevelopment and older population kicking the bucket. Being from an extended family that is mostly working class Italians and growing up in a small rural town. I know that it is a photo finish between Rednecks and working class Italians on who is more intolerent/racist (I am speaking in generalizations). I think LI might be be more accepting now overall, nothing like back in the day, but I really don't get over there much."

...adding to the "photo finish" between groups that qualify as "intolerant/racist" we can now proudly add liberal, Democrat Senators of the United States! The hypocrisy continues...

I hate Barb as much as the next guy, but that Mr. Alford needs to take a chill pill.  But in the grand scheme of things, our Constitution defines people by their race, and so long as racism is institutionalized in this country it's never going away.  You can't provide for benefits based on race without inciting hatred somewhere on the other side.

It does??

Oscar Mayer Wienermobile crashes into Wis. home

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090718/ap_on_fe_st/us_odd_wienermobile_wreck

MOUNT PLEASANT, Wis. – One southern Wisconsin homeowner is probably not in love with the Oscar Mayer wiener. The famed hot dog's Wienermobile crashed Friday into the deck and garage of a home in Mount Pleasant, about 35 miles south of Milwaukee.

Police said the driver was trying to turn the Wienermobile around in the driveway and thought she was moving in reverse. But she instead went forward and hit the home. It sat in the driveway as if it were stuck in the garage Friday afternoon.

No one was home and no one was injured. No citations were immediately issued.

Both the home and vehicle suffered moderate damage, which Oscar Mayer spokeswoman Sydney Lindner says insurance will cover.

Police hadn't been able to speak to the homeowner as of early Friday evening.

There is increasing protest against reverse racism, though.....People who are sick and tired of being told that "if you don't agree with us, you're racist." Many will not give up rights and freedoms to conform to what someone else's idea of a non-racist is.

He made her look like a total a$$.  I pretty much agreed with the guy, and it was absolutely hysterical.  The ultra liberal Boxer being called a racist and having the tables turned.  That was great.

However, I think it's pretty common to fall into the trap of comparing people with only others who have the same skin color.  This always happens is sports, as the white guys are always compared to white guys, and vice-versa.

I thought he was totally right, and that is something that often happens.

Agree 100%.  Not sure if you saw it, but Maddow had an argument with Buchanon the other night aboout Sotomayor.  While Pat was a little off in his remarks, his basic premise was that the supreme court justices should be the best and the brightest, no matter what color they happen to be.  Of course, Maddow, whom I generally like, took that as Pat wanting No Latinos, which he wasn't saying at all.  Then Rachel said he was "dating" himself, which I found very degrading.  I was praying he would snap back, "Rachel, you're really butching yourself."

I am officially old.  Saw America over the weekend.  There were people standing in line with walkers.

I'm officially old with you, I love America and just watched a PBS special about them a couple of months ago.

I'm really old too ; and while I was never a really big America fan, I loved this song:

apparently Michael Jackson was an America fan also:

America Respond To Michael Jackson’s “A Place With No Name”

Why write you're own music when you can slightly alter someone else's work and call it you're own?

I hope everything is OK with your grandfather.  Obama is going to be all over NEO- CC, Shaker High.... well that it's.

Thanks, but he did it to himsself.  My entire family is on some "50 million pound - Biggest loser" overload.

Today my grand parents and cousins kids were riding, on one of the paths between E Blvd and MLK as they were en route to tennis and he hit the curb or a hole and took a nasty tumble over the handlebars of his bike, so my grand mother ordered him off to the Clinic.

I'm so worried about them, they are in their 80's and I think they are over exerting themselves.  Running, tennis, bike riding, swimming, it's too much.

I have been teasing my lazy fatass cousin for years. Last year he weighed about 270 lbs.  So since thanksgiving of last year, my cousin has been losing weight.  To be supportive, his mom and dad, our my grandmother some of my cousins, went in with him.

Since the beginning of the year, he's lost about 70 lbs.  He actually walks to work (big whoop, he's just crossing Chagrin).  Now almost all my family is on this "health kick" unfortunately they will never be as svelte as my mother and I!

My grandmother runs from her house to Wade Oval and back almost every day.  She has lost 49 lbs.  Now she is obsessed with being as thin as my mom.  My grand mother wasn't that big to begin with.  Earlier this year, my grand father decided he wasn't going to be the fat on in the family, (he asked my father and my uncle what was their "due date"  LOL)  so he started running, riding and lifting weights with my cousins kids.

Their new lifestyle is throwing a cramp into mine.  My grandmother no longer cooks the way she did.  My grandmother is an awesome cook, but now everything is "healthy".  In the past I could count on her to bake a cake or a pie every Sunday.  She hasn't baked in months!  I had to resort to crying and whining in order to get her to make my birthday cake.  :x  Hey, guilt works both ways & she can't stand to see me upset!!

So since almost all my fathers family is in this weight loss cult, weighing less than me is their running joke.  Since I didn't have a weight problem, my "challenge" was to give up shopping until August 1.  We all know I would have failed that miserably.  So my challenge is to not drink coffee or eat meat.  This is going to back fire on them.  Since I haven't eaten any meat or carbs since memorial day and increased my cardio, the body is lovely and my skin has been this good since I was 23.

our Constitution defines people by their race

It does??

If the Civil Rights Act is Constituional, than yes it does, or at very least allows it to be.  (I tend to play devils advocate when it comes to federal government)

The Civil Rights Act is a statute, not part of the Constitution.  You said that "our constitution" defines people by their race.  I have read that document a few times and must have missed that part.  Could you direct me to the article/section and/or amendment that defines people by their race?

Not sure where you are going with the argument that the Civil Rights Act defines people by their race either.  Sure, it was conceived to protect black people, but it was amended prior to passage to specifically include women and all other races (including WHITE people FYI).  Regardless, not sure how anyone is "defined" by their race.

The last time anyone was "defined" by their race in this country is when black men were defined as 3/5 of a man.
