If you're going to send me PM's be man enough to clean out your PM box so that I can respond to your bitchassness!

Quick question - I am looking to find the age of a couple of buildings in Cleveland.  I am about to head downtown to do my research.  Does anyone know the best places I can go to find this info?  I know the county map room will have history of ownership, but it won't say when the structure was built.

FYI - already checked with the archive in Ohio City and they did not have much for me.

Thanks!!!

Wouldn't the Cuyahoga County auditor have that information?

http://auditor.cuyahogacounty.us/repi/default.asp Go to "Search real estate property information" in the first column and type in the address of the parcel. I'm pretty sure Hamilton and Franklin County give that information - Cuyahoga might also but I'm not 100 percent sure.

^website only has the year of construction listed for residential properties; no info for commercial parcels.  to find residential ages, look under the property sketch tab.

My company purchased a building on Eucild Ave and we are moving our offices there.  I am trying to find the year it was built.  I went to City Hall and they had a records guy.  The info they had was a little iffy, since the current building isn't the first structure on the site, there was a previous building that was demolished.

Is it ethical for a newspaper to publish the mug shot of an alleged drug offender before his or her trial? The Standard-Times, a newspaper in (New Bedford, Mass., ran a popular feature in the 90s called "Drug Watch" wherein they published photographs each day of people arraigned in court on drugs charges.

Lots of variables and laws vary state by state.  To my understanding, the media, with consent, can post a picture of an alleged criminal.  However, after arraignment the picture is "state" property.  Meaning it is  public property, which the general media has access.

As long the paper states and/or implies that the alleged is  innocent until proven guilty.

I think they should have to wait until the trial is over (unless they're already a public figure). That would be humiliating if you were innocent and the media did that to you. It would ruin your reputation.

I think you may be able to pull old building permits from the Dept of Building.  I don't remember the exact process- I did it years ago.  The availability and detail of the records depends on how old the building is as well.  You could also check Sanborn maps- they are available online- just search to find the page, and then you'll have to navigate through to the right map.

Why?  what exactly is the media doing??  You're alleged.  How is it humiliating?  The alleged should have thought about that before doing whatever they were doing that got them in to the situation.

Innocent people have no problems.  Guilty and hung juries are a different thing.

I object your honor and I move to strike!!!

I hate city marathons. I wish they didn't exist.

I like 'em, especially in warm weather. That, and 10K runs, etc. Quite often the route goes right past my house, and I can sit on my back porch or patio and watch the lean, fit, and sometimes shirtless men go by.

My beef with marathons is that it seems to be such a strain on city resources. They had to block so many streets and use police officers to direct traffic. I also noticed a lot of litter. COTA doesn't tell bus drivers about alternative routes until the day of the event so people have to figure something out the day before and are expected to know about the marathon going on.  All this so people can jog? The live music they were playing along the corridor was pretty cool though.

How long can you keep movies that you rent from the Columbus Public Library? I think I need to take The End of Suburbia back. Hope I don't owe fees already.

Stealing movies from the public library!  How low can you go?

What about the ole bring the laptop to the library trick where you pop in a few of their CD's and rip them to your desktop.

It does bring out-of-towners in. I don't think the police duty is free, and the marathon organizers have to pay for it using the entry fees

I didn't ask for your moral advice; I asked when documentaries are due!

I didn't read any advice, I think he was just making a statement!

My landlord keeps banging on his bongo drums upstairs. I'm never gonna get anything done tonight. I can't be mad because he already warned that it would be like this. I have to admit though, he's one of the most interesting landlords I've ever had. He left these Van Gogh sunflower paintings in the unit when I moved in along with this abstract painting of circles. I think it inspired this huge circular sunflower garden he made in the backyard. He has a Salvador Dali mustache! He drives this old school mercedes sedan; I bet it runs on vegetable oil. Next time he starts it up I'm gonna walk outside and see if it smells like french fries.

I once almost moved into an apartment complex near Ault Park in Cincinnati...the complex manager took us around and showed us the apartment...nice place.  Then he took us over to the neighbor's place where they had a weekly cocktail hour on Fridays.  The place was trashed and there were still joints in the ashtrays.  He told us that everyone was really nice and got along well.

yeah, it seemed like a nice place...but, we liked the idea of having a landlord that wasn't going to be high when something broke in our place (he basically told us that when something went wrong he'd "get around to it").

If you had a free standing house in the suburbs with some space between you and your neighbors, it would probably be more tolerable.

You have my sympathy. My little building is infested with NYU students and sound travels easily between apartments even with normal living noise. My extremely quiet next door neighbor of the past few years just moved out (a very young and rising actress who’s been featured in several movies, critically acclaimed Broadway & off-B'way plays--nominated for a Tony award a couple of years ago--and starred in an HBO series), but I'm surprised she stayed as long as she did, given her success and the high turnover of tenants generally. But the best thing about her was that she was away for half the year; and quiet as a mouse even when she was home. I’m dreading who will move in! Ugh!

No way, lol.  My parents live in a ranch home and you can still hear everything from the neighbors.  They aren't even being loud, but those 2x10 walls can only block so much.

maybe they should close the windows.

Well they have AC and heat so the windows are only open for fresh air and it's assumed there will be daytime noise.  But those 2x10 stud walls can only block so much . . . .

I'm impressed how much quieter my downtown highrise apartment is despite being just off one of Chicago's busiest streets.  The windows are closed, and yes it's dead silent in here.  Point of my post was, it's all about type of construction.  Most new single family home construction doesn't usually take noise into consideration, if not at all.  On the other side, alot is invested in exterior and interior acoustic control materials in almost any multi-unit urban construction or renovation.

Just watched the most exciting/frustrating ending of a baseball game that I have ever seen. I never knew I could get so excited over sports.

My 1920 plaster walls keep out most sound.  Gotta love old construction.

If you pay for it, noise control will be taken into consideration.  If you buy a spec home that was built to give buyers an idea of the layout, size and functionality, it probably wasn't taken into consideration.

Actually in typical early century homes and apartments, you rarely go above an STC rating of 32 for interior walls.  I mean, that's really thick plaster over typical stud walls.  Maybe if the walls are insulated it may be higher, but it's far from easily attainable levels today.  Separation between units in many newer urban buildings is reaching the 50's and 60's.  With condo buildings, achieving ranges within the high 50's low 60's is almost a must.  No expensive buyer wants to hear their neighbors.

And ditto to gotribes post.  Although many new insulating strategies that builders or developers choose to use by default can achieve some pretty high ratings

Random question:  does anybody know what the original use of the building which houses the Winking Lizard in Lakewood.

Another random Q - my couch cushions are really saggy but the couch itself is otherwise in fine condition, including the covering for the cushions.  Does anybody know where I might be able to go to get new cushions cut to the size of the ones for my couch?  Preferably on the W or SW side of town?

It was the Lakewood Elk's Lodge back in the day, but I think even before that it was a built for a social club of some sort.

My parents had their wedding reception there in the early 60s.

I believe it was a tennis club at some point and the area behind it that is now the Giant Eagle parking lot was were the courts were. Either way it is an awesome building...

Honestly, I would go to Value City and get a couch for $299.  My wife and I bought one there 9 years ago, has gotten alot of use by us and kids, and it is still holding up well.  Now that I think of it, we bought a new couch at Levin in Middleburg about 8 mos ago for $399.

I know I can get a new one, I'd just like to continue to use this one if there was a way to fix it.

There is a place in Cle Hts on Noble Road just north of Monticello called Charlie's Fabric.  I believe my wife had new foam cut there for one of our couches.  Really, you could try just about an upholstery shop and they should be able to cut them for you

Stuff 'em full o' rope, and use it for a guest bed. Company won't overstay their welcome!

Who is the manufacture?  Ask what/who they used and if they have a local contact.  Then see if you can negotiate a deal.

I just had somebody walk of my bus and exclaim, "Ugh, poor people!"  WTF?

Well you were on or getting on the bus, correct?  he he he

That would be hillarious if it turned out a Massillon fan got into Google and changed Canton's name, with the big rivalry game this Saturday.
