February 8, 201015 yr I'm craving boston creme donuts from Dunkin. Anyone ever had those? :-PI think I'm going to head over there and get some and just eat a giant bowl of mixed vegetables for dinner later tonight.

Anyone ever had those? :-PI think I'm going to head over there and get some and just eat a giant bowl of mixed vegetables for dinner later tonight. I'm more of an apple fritter man. It's healthy because there's apple in it. And fritter.
February 8, 201015 yr Can anyone define "fritter"? Umm yeah, this is the internet... :-D http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Fritter&l=1 But yes, I used to get those Boston Creme donuts all the time. I have a friend that is obsessed with DD and my waistline likely thanks me that we live in different states now. I used to end up at that place two or more times a week.
February 8, 201015 yr Heyerly's Bakery in tiny Ossian - quite possibly the best in Northeast Indiana. Pecan rolls, apple fritters, bear claws, creme-filled chocolate eclairs ... Just typing those words made my belt feel tighter. There's a nice Mexican bakery not far from where I live, too. One glance through the front window, and I'm irresistibly drawn inside to pick up a tray and tongs and load up. Some of the things look too pretty to eat, but one bite and those reservations are cast aside. Few things will ever match my late grandmother's German coffee cake, though, yeast-raised, dense and moist, and topped with a crumbly mix of butter, brown sugar and cinnamon. Sadly, the recipe went to the grave with her.
February 9, 201015 yr The snow is really coming down now (downtown Cleve). I went out for a short walk like I usually do before picking up lunch and I looked like something from Dr. Zhivago after only about 15 minutes.
February 9, 201015 yr This is the first time in a long time that I'm actually excited for snow. I guess my area is supposed to get from 6-10 inches through tonight and tomorrow.
February 9, 201015 yr IT'S RAINING GOLD!!! (I get paid hourly to shovel and today is the jackpot. I'm going to be ripped by the end of this blizzard.) And as an added bonus: SLEDDING!!!
February 9, 201015 yr Well, we thought we'd make it official and get the word out that XUMelanie is pregnant with a "No on 9" baby! Need to get moving on finding larger digs in Over-the-Rhine in Cincy. Blog Post: http://mycincinnatilife.com "Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago." - Warren Buffett
February 9, 201015 yr Congratulations. Your lives will never be the same! That must have been some party on election night!

February 9, 201015 yr Thanks for the congrats! And I love the emoticon of the baby from rockandroller. :)
February 10, 201015 yr IT'S RAINING GOLD!!! (I get paid hourly to shovel and today is the jackpot. I'm going to be ripped by the end of this blizzard.) And as an added bonus: SLEDDING!!! After consecutive days of 5 or 6 hours plus on the shovel, ripped doesn't exactly describe the way I feel. This much snow doesn't stir the same excitement in me that it did when I was fifty years younger. I'm contemplating buying a snow blower; I'm fully aware that as soon as I do, the snow will stop, never to return. It's all good, so long as I it gets me away from endless shoveling.

Just get the snowblower. Even if it doesn't snow this year, there's always next year. My dad a few years ago bought an industrial sized electric start John Deere for our driveway (they live on a rural rd in upstate NY, so there's no sidewalks). Did he need it? No, but given the glee with which he hurls the snow into our neighbor's yard (50 feet away I might add), I'd say the endorphins flooding his brain more than makes up for the other inefficiencies.
February 10, 201015 yr Rob, Kudos on making it this long without a snowblower. That is an impressive feat, although how much snow do you usually get in FW a year? I know that you have been pounded this year. Maybe just pay the nieghbor kid and support the local economy, it might be cheaper :)

I know that you have been pounded this year. Maybe just pay the nieghbor kid and support the local economy, it might be cheaper :) Snowfall varies widely. This year has been heavy; the last few weren't. There used to be a group of four or five high-school boys who would go through the neighborhood with snow shovels looking for work, especially on snow days when schools were closed. I always paid well to make sure they'd come to my place first, and it was neat watching them. They had the teamwork down solid, and moved a lot of snow fast. They've all gone away to college. I'm in an old city neighborhood where a lot of residents are renters, and the homeowners are either too young to have working-age kids, or retirees like me. All the families with kids who could do the work are in the 'burbs, and the kids are either playing video games or glued to the tube watching spongebob squarepants.
February 10, 201015 yr Speaking of Indiana, they have a couple of political blogs that I wish could be duplicated for Ohio politics. Doug Masson's is the best...even if he is a tad too liberal for my liking. Ohio has nothing matching that.
February 11, 201015 yr rob a guy i work with lives in a house in eastern queens and he went in on an electric cord type snowblower with two neighbors. its working out great for them this year. might be an option if you are debating getting one and if you have enough homeowners nearby.
February 11, 201015 yr I was looking at electrics at Lowe's, and they have one that's only about $250 that probably would handle most of what I encounter. For heavier snows, I usually start early and shovel often anyway. With my corner lot, I have about a half-block of sidewalk, plus a two-car driveway. I use a corded electric lawnmower, and I have a couple of outlets on the side of my house and garage for that. I discovered that my electric leaf blower does a bang-up job of sweeping light snow from my porch and steps.
February 12, 201015 yr Even a shop vac in blower mode can get rid of light stuff at least close to the house.

They used leaf blowers to clear the snow off the infield.
February 12, 201015 yr Wondering if anyone has resources and inclination to do a good deed. My elderly mother's driveway is in such an awful state now, I can no longer get up and down the driveway when I drop my baby off. She cannot shovel it anymore, it hurts her hands too much (arthritis) and I can't do it, I have a really bad problem with my back (am going to a new chiro today as my D.O. is out for shoulder surgery). It's seriously like a foot high now, and it's a really short driveway on a small street in Lakewood and she is like trapped in there. Does anyone have the ability/resources and the good will to help her out with a quick plow or shoveling? I contacted Lakewood's dept of aging today and they apparently have a program she qualifies for for future plowing, but it's going to take quite awhile to get her into the system, they have to mail out an application and she has to mail it back and who knows how long after that before they actually include her in the plan (she had previously told me she was ineligible for this so I never pursued it before. I finally decided she was full of shit and called them myself and I was right, so now she'll be in it).

February 16, 201015 yr What kind of house are you? http://www.frontdoor.com/Buy/Home-Styles--What-kind-of-house-are-YOU/1088/?syc=IBS_1088syc=news_ Take the quiz: http://www.frontdoor.com/Buy/Architecture-Quiz-Question-1/1134 I came out as a Victorian: You're a refined Victorian! You love antiquing or working in the garden when not planning the next fabulous party you're hosting. You love the preparations and presentations of life but this doesn't mean you're shallow -- far from it. You want your friends and family to feel cared for and comfortable. Like a Victorian house, you can be dark with mysterious passages, but for someone willing to look there's always a sunny spot. and one of the areas of the country with Victorians the website listed is Columbia Tusculum in Cincinnati. They showed me homes for sale in the area and I kinda like this one: http://www.frontdoor.com/For_Sale/listing/882-1001163548/3710-Creighton-Pl-Columbia-tusculum-Cincinnati-OH-45226
February 16, 201015 yr Well, I certainly have never been described as introverted. You're a lively Spanish Colonial! Like a Spanish Colonial home, you are warm with an eye toward the romance of living. While you are traditional and can be a little introverted, you are also enlivened with impulsive flairs of color that amuse and energize your friends and family. Spanish Colonial homes take a simple construction style and add artistic details like painted tiles, iron fixtures, and huge carved doors denoting, like you, a love of art and individuality. Your combination of down-to-earth fun and elegance puts everyone at ease.

You're a mix, too. You take the best from the world and make it all work together. Though sophisticated, you're still up for a night of dancing on a sawdust floor. You love life. You have a welcoming temperament and can always find time to chat over snacks." Hooo, Boy! Me! Highbrow! Hmmm. Yeah, I like that style but it's too high-maintenance for me to get serious about. Here's what I have, and it suits me fine:
February 16, 201015 yr I had to go look up what a spanish colonial is. They are definitely up my alley. Guess I won't be finding many of those here in the cleve. No wonder we'll never buy a house.
February 17, 201015 yr Ranch house!!!! F you HGTV! "You're solid as a Ranch house! Simple and suburban by nature, you exude a cozy warmth that lets people know you don't mind if they leave their shoes on in the house -- it's only carpet, after all! Family and friends are important to you, and you love having them stop by. While not overly fussy or vain, you care about your looks -- but honestly, you're happiest in sweatpants. To you, life isn't measured in the goods you've acquired, but in time well spent." I always saw myself as more of an Arts and Crafts kind of guy. Or maybe a Tudor. Their style guide for Tudor page shows a house on Lake Rd. in Bay Village, btw. I think I knew a girl who grew up in it, but it may have been another Tudor on that stretch. It must be because I chose John Goodman over Keanu Reaves. I'm sure Keanu would have netted me Arts and Crafts. Or maybe if my favorite memory was quite time with my mother and/or father when I was child instead of one of the others favorite memories that I don't share but had to choose.

February 17, 201015 yr Maybe if most of the actors weren't female, I knew more about paintings and actually had more of the life experiences listed I wouldn't have come out as a Ranch.

Ha.....I'm a ranch too. And interestingly I did choose Keaunu Reeves (Bill and Ted era). 'Oh, you beautiful babes from England, for whom we have traveled through time... will you go to the prom with us in San Dimas? We will have a most triumphant time! ' Would Ted be a Ranch? I think not! Bill, maybe.

February 18, 201015 yr Man, hearing about Capt. Phil Harris (from Deadliest Catch) dying bums me out...i mean, the guy didn't take care of himself (especially following his previous issues) but still...i thought he came across as a pretty decent guy.
February 18, 201015 yr He did seem like a decent guy. I was really sad to hear that news. Honestly, I hope Jake and Josh get out of fishing, I think that's what he wanted for them both. It's such a hard life.
