September 4, 201014 yr Rob is the wisest person I've ever encountered ... Not so. I know a total of about a half-dozen things, and they just happen to be in subjects that people sometimes talk about. If I posted to admit my lack of knowledge about much that comes up on the forums, I'd be the biggest post whore on UO. :? I've learned some stuff about house-renovation safety by being involved in a couple of in-depth projects, and some of the lessons came from nearly getting killed. Two incidents involved taking down and putting up ceiings. On potentially dangerous projects, the biggest lessons are (1) Read anything you can find about the work and talk with somone with experience (2) Think it through, (3) Take your time, and (4) Don't work alone. There's lots of information on product safety available on line and in books and from established merchants who work in those product lines. The most common hazards in old-house renovation are asbestos in linoleum, floor tiles, and tile cement, sometimes in plaster and acoustic ceiling tiles, and around pipes in old steam-heat systems. Old houses are almost sure to have some lead paint in them, and on the exterior those 1940s - 1950s brittle "shakes" are full of asbestos. That's just a beginning.

September 9, 201014 yr I'm on the board of a non-profit that wants to start allowing people to sign up for volunteer activities online as well as allow for tracking of volunteer hours for grant writing and other purposes. I have started looking at a couple of hosted, low cost software options (links below), but I wanted to know if anyone else has done any research into something of this nature. Thoughts? http://www.i-volunteeronline.com/ http://www.myvolunteer.com/ "Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago." - Warren Buffett
September 10, 201014 yr I did not really know where to appropriately post this question/comment. It concerns Broadway Ave. in Cleveland. Sometimes I have to travel down that road for work related reasons and have not been in around 6 months until today. The road was apparently getting some sewer work done for several miles. It was virtually un-drivable, bikeable, or busable due to the surface being so bumpy. Does anyone know if this road is going to be re-surfaced when this project is completed? I mean it was utterly terrible....and I am concerned as I may have to drive it more these days...and if I do, there will be nothing left of my vehicle!
September 10, 201014 yr The roads projects around me have been slow to finish. Not sure if this is a new technique or if I just never noticed before, but they are ripping up the roads and then setting a layer of new surface a few inches below the drains and manholes. It makes for a bumpy ride. They let that settle in for a few weeks and then finish it off with another layer of surface.
September 10, 201014 yr There's something special about NYC's tap water hehe: http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2010/09/what_makes_new_york_tap_water.html No joke- there was a raging debate a few years ago whether NYC's tap water was even Kosher because of these little guys.
September 10, 201014 yr Broadway was having sewage work done in the middle..but the sides have not been stripped and are barely drivable. I hope they plan on resurfacing this.
September 10, 201014 yr ii otenke desu ne?! I love fall weather! Everything is so subtle, the temperature is perfect and there's always a calm breeze. It just doesn't get any better than fall (especially since my birthday is right before Halloween). Everything looks better in Autumn too. I was walking along Schiller Park the other day and the grand old brick homes that line the park all had lights casted on the facades from their Italianate Cornices that you could see mid-day and the leaves were all falling off. I need to go take pictures or videos of it on the Bloggie Cam.
September 11, 201014 yr It's funny how different people perceive it. I think fall is beautiful, but very sad. All around me all I see are things dying and it getting colder and colder. From light vests and sweaters to jackets to heavy coats, turning on the heat and electric blanket, and me having cold hands and feet all the time by the end of it, all fall means to me is "here comes misery."
September 11, 201014 yr Yeah, I can see that. I guess I like having a break from the hot summer. I hate winter too. I don't like any extreme weather. It sucks Fall seems to be the shortest season here.

From light vests and sweaters to jackets to heavy coats, turning on the heat and electric blanket, and me having cold hands and feet all the time by the end of it, all fall means to me is "here comes misery." Fall is my favorite time of year, but I agree with you, RNR, in that there is a certain sense of melancholy associated with it as well. I've always associated it with my feelings when I was a kid, and summer was over, and I had to get back to school. But there's something about a sunny crisp fall day that makes me feel happy. I love the way the sunlight is slightly washed out and at an angle. It seems to bring a certain sharpness to everything. I'm also a big apple pie and pumpking pie man. This is my time of year. Oh yeah....and FOOTBALL!
September 12, 201014 yr Summer to me has always meant heat and isolation. My friends always seem to be out of town and I usually end up working harder even though I have a much lower energy level during that time of year. I end up napping a lot. Especially when I was in school, fall meant socializing and being around others my own age finally and the heat blanket being removed.
September 12, 201014 yr I'm looking forward to fall in Chicago. It's the transition between two extremes. I'll admit the summers here are amazing with the lake, beaches, and all the throngs of vacationers on Michigan Ave. But the fall brings less humid temperatures, cool comfortable breezes, colorful tree lined streets, and the excitement of an upcoming holiday season. The most enjoyable time in this city is April-December. I wish January-March I could work in California during those 3 months. My company needs to open an office there.

September 13, 201014 yr I'm thinking I would take public transit. I'm starting to appreciate it alot more in LA. It's really not as difficult as some make it out to be. But I think that's only because I'm coming from Chicago and have dealt with public transit annoyances.
September 13, 201014 yr All so soon after Antoine Dodson comes this little gem http://www.break.com/index/backin-up-remix.html#id1911428
September 13, 201014 yr No one wants to help clean threads? :? I'm getting lonely in there. I might have to start singing slave work songs so that the time passes quicker.
September 15, 201014 yr Anybody else here watching Mad Men? I am currently obsessed with it , again. UGH! ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

September 16, 201014 yr Anybody else here watching Mad Men? I am currently obsessed with it , again. UGH! ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) Sorry I meant is anybody watching Golden Girls? This is the first season that I get to watch as it unfolds because I didn't have AMC until I switched to Uverse in March. I actually thought the first couple of espisodes of MM Season 1 were slow and not all that compelling but the attention to detaill was design geeks dream. Then once the story got rolling I got into it, watched all the way through MM season 2. So now I am rewatching season 1 with my wife to get her caught up and watching seasons 3 and 4 simultaneously, which is an interesting way to watch a show that is also layered with flashbacks. I for one would gladly trade business casual for a suit and tie if it came with booze at work.

September 16, 201014 yr LOL...'whack'. Wick-Wick-Whack! I think it's totally fresh. I refuse to watch. I saw the pilot when they were selling the show, we passed on it.
September 16, 201014 yr Not surprising. Like I said, especially if they didn't reshoot the pilot, it was slow at first. And I imagine the bill to shoot a period piece like that isn't cheap. Well I am glad you have corporate allegiance.. :) because I sure don't...
September 16, 201014 yr Not surprising. Like I said, especially if they didn't reshoot the pilot, it was slow at first. And I imagine the bill to shoot a period piece like that isn't cheap. From what I understand a majority of the broadcast "pilot" was edited/reshot.

From what I understand a majority of the broadcast "pilot" was edited/reshot. Gotcha, there is a lot of the novelty factor in the first season. Casual racism! Drinking and smoking at work! Secretarial pools! Blatant chauvinist behavior! etc..The real storyline didn't begin rolling along until about halfway in season one. MW writes a tight storyline that usually has small details that have significant implications episodes later. AMC wanted to get into original programming so they had nothing to lose. It turned out to be a good roll of the dice. Great show.
September 16, 201014 yr I love it when people bring their kids to work. They're so cute. One of the guys that works for me brought his toddler, because his morning sitter became ill. The kid is soooooo adorable, I want to keep him! He's was standing on the sofa, looking out the window and points down and says "park", "taxi", "bird". Now hes sitting on my desk and say "puter". I love kids! I haven't done a thing all morning!
September 16, 201014 yr You shouldn't show your 'puter' to kids. That's not right. LOL I just put in Looney Tunes DVD. Those characters hypnotize kids.
September 16, 201014 yr My kids don't even know what Looney Tunes is. I don't think they're on TV anymore :-(
September 16, 201014 yr They still are on fairly regularly, my kids manage to find them every now and then. The old Tom & Jerry cartoon are on all the time on cartoon Network. My middle one actually brought home a drawing he did at kindergarten of Jerry about to drop a brick on a rope pulley trap on Tom as he was chased by the dog drawn with really big teeth. Quality life lessons in those old cartoons.
September 16, 201014 yr I've seen Tom & Jerry. I remember reading a while back that WB was going to start making new ones soon. Hopefully not those highly angular superhero versions.
September 16, 201014 yr My kids don't even know what Looney Tunes is. I don't think they're on TV anymore :( The nerve. You and your kids need a good smack! Hopefully not those highly angular superhero versions. I don't recall seeing anything, but WB wouldn't be making them.
September 16, 201014 yr I think Cartoon Network is producing them. But they would need WB's blessing to do so, yes yes?
September 16, 201014 yr I think Cartoon Network is producing them. But they would need WB's blessing to do so, yes yes? No it would be Turner. WB is just our distributor for all filmed (theatrical/non theatrical/TV) entertainment. It's very complicated. It took me a six months to figure out how everything works and some days I have to refer to charts to determine who makes what and how it's distributed.
September 17, 201014 yr Just a random thought. It's kinda weird that TW divested TWC just before access providers buying up content companies (Comcast/Universal) came to be such a doomsday scenario ala "Super Conferences" in college football. I imagine that if TW hadn't done that you would have seen the rest of the industry already vertically integrated and well on their way to screwing us all even harder.
September 17, 201014 yr Man I hate doing laundry. I wish clothes would magically clean themselves. I bought one of those mammoth detergent bottles with the tap, not thinking that I live in a highrise and need to get it to the laundry room 14 floors down. I've given up on it, and donated it for all my building to use. It'll probably be used up in 2 days.
September 17, 201014 yr just pour the appropriate amount on the clothes in the basket, then carry them downstairs.

I imagine that if TW hadn't done that you would have seen the rest of the industry already vertically integrated and well on their way to screwing us all even harder. When I hear other folks tell of their experiences with access providers in recent years, I'm glad I gave up on TV a few years ago. I've never had cable, and even before the changeover to digital took place I had unplugged my set. I haven't bought a digital TV, converter, or adapter for my computer. I have better things to do with my time than to sit around ingesting useless calories for the mind, and during the day when I'm working on projects I don't want the distraction; NPR in the background suits me fine, and sometimes I learn something useful. I don't miss TV at all, and in fact when I have to spend time in a public space where there's a TV that I can't turn off, it annoys me immensely.
