This is my first New Year's sitting around the house since probably 1997. All my friends are either out of town or also staying in. It's LAME.

This is the first year I haven't gone out for New Year's Eve. Instead I spent it in a hotel room with my 3 year old niece watching Wall-E. My sister's birthday is today and she never gets the opportunity to celebrate. It was an absolute pleasure relaxing while she got that opportunity.

She fell asleep on my shoulder at about 10:30pm.

Well, I heard the neighbors making noise so I just went over there around 11 and partied anyway.

Isaac Asimov predicts 2014

Vehicles with ‘Robot-brains’ … can be set for particular destinations … that will then proceed there without interference by the slow reflexes of a human driver.

Robots will neither be common nor very good in 2014, but they will be in existence.

Privacy, politics, culture and creativity always ruin these silly idealistic predictions of the future....as they should.

He'd be very, very right about boredom, were it not for smartphones and their ilk.

The pictures part of the phone he got right to (Facetime), except people choose not to use it more often than not.

Clarke's predictions were interesting as well.

Scientists: Dogs poop aligned to Earth's magnetic field

Scientists at the Cezch University of Life Sciences in Prague have found that dogs are sensitive to Earth's magnetism. In fact, they're so sensitive that they poop aligned to the planet's magnetic field. I don't know what that means or why is it useful, but I find it fascinating.

The research paper—published in the journal Frontiers in Zoology—says that dogs "prefer to excrete with the body being aligned along the North-south axis under calm MF (magnetic field) conditions." Apparently, if the MF is unstable–like when Earth is hit by a solar flare—they get confused.

This must be why they walk in circles.  I once wrote a version of a certain Katrina and the Waves song along these lines....

If, tomorrow, my neighbor goes for three straight days of firing up his snow blower at 6am, I might need one of you to bail me out of jail.

Morning people, as a rule, are very inconsiderate about this sort of thing because they have a holier-than-thou attitude about being morning people.

"But getting up early does not get more work done... any more than you can make a piece of string longer by cutting off one end and tying it onto the other. You get less work done if you persist in getting up yawning and still tired. You aren't sharp and make mistakes and have to do it over. That sort of busy-busy is wasteful. As well as unpleasant. And annoying to those who would sleep late if their neighbors weren't so noisily active at some ungodly cow-milking hour. [...] progress doesn't come from early risers -- progress is made by lazy men looking for easier ways to do things."

-Robert A. Heinlein (as Lazarus Long).  "Long" also seems to have invented the expression that the early worm deserves the bird.

Ugh, my neighbor is the worst kind of busy body. The semi-employed, who will shovel or snow blow as early as he can, when he has all day to do it. Or when there is 2 inches of the 8 inches that are on the way. I am still old school and shovel. It's exercise and takes me less time than it does them to snowblow if it's light fluffy snow.

I am shovel guy too.  I have a snow blower and all it probably needs is a new sparkplug, but I find that we either don't get enough snow in one storm to make it worth it or we get the heavy stuff that the snow blower has trouble with.

With regard to the early morning this, I inquired and ordinance where I live says no equipment prior to 9am....... but there seems to be some latitute with snow blowing due to people needing to get to work.  Maybe I'll just call my neighbor next time we have a storm coming and ask him nicely to hold off at least until 7:30...... I'll call him around 1am so I make sure he and his wife have the kids asleep first.

Hey, some of us are understanding. I, and many of my fellow morning folks, go out of our way to be nice to the folks that can't seem to figure out how to wake up at the right time. The problem is that you don't notice us, you just notice the assholes. On the same token, I have to assume there are some nightowls that are polite about keeping quiet late at night, but there's always some asshole that decides to cranks his music up on a Tuesday night till midnight that makes us think you folks are lazy good for nothing deadbeats that deserve to have to listen to our snowblowers at 6am.

Note: I have never and will never fire up the snowblower or lawnmower prior to 8am, even if you do deserve it, because I realize that the rest of the street doesn't.

^Maybe your kids wouldn't think you were so grumpy if you didn't wake up at the butt-crack of dawn every morning.

FWIW, I don't hate typical "morning guy" as much as I hate "I run 10 miles before you wake up" guy...... especially the A-holes out there in full winter gear running on a day like this.

This reminds me that there was a guy riding his bicycle on Richmond Road northbound last week, on snow covered roads during a very busy rush hour.  He was in full gear as well, so didn't look like a "no car" type unless if by choice.  Not long after I encountered him, there was a bad accident that had northbound Richmond sealed off and one lane southbound gone too, and I wonder if someone simply didn't see him until late (he was wearing biking gear but it was dark and didn't have a lot of reflective strips.

Some of the people leaving early on snowy mornings need to.  I try to leave before there is any traffic.  Though since I don't have a sidewalk, if I can pull out through the s*** I do.

You should have lived with me as a kid.  Your comment is probably based on your life and where you grew up, but I think if you had to shovel my parents property, you would change your tune about using a shovel.

We had to use a snow blower, or it would have taken us hours.  Luckily we didn't have sidewalks back then or shoveling all that snow would have been terrible.

I am a hybrid morning person, I don't mind waking up early once I am on a schedule but there is no way I am doing anything more strenuous than working at my computer before 8 AM. I woke up at 5:45 for 6 years to commute to Akron and get out of there at a decent hour so I could see my kids for a few hours at night.

No matter how hard I try I cannot get into an exercise routine before work. Late night, after work or lunch works best. I've had the most success with Lunch when I can run or go to the gym, otherwise it's running at 10PM or p90x/insanity/etc videos after the kids go to bed.

Above mention neighbor waited until 10 AM to snowblow the non existent snow today, wtf? I could see his driveway already. We literally got less than another 2" here on the Westside of CLE and most of it blew away?

I can't do strenuous stuff right after meals. I'll barf.

I'm an early riser, so I just get up and run.  It's peaceful and I can "think" about world domination.

^Welcome back by the way. It's been too quiet around here lately.

Oh please.  I'm sure KJP, CDM, MayDay and the UO in Greece [uO's version of the KarTrashians meets the Jersey Shore] celebs have kept the forum going.

^^Just get up and run....yeah right.

How was the Sabbatical? Is the manifesto nearly done? Lol

I wish it was a sabbatical.  I racked up more frequent flyer miles in the last 4 months than I care to remember.  Even after going to my dream destination, Maldives, I'm glad to be back in the states.  Now off to God awful Lost Wages, followed by San Fran and LaLa Land. Ehhhhhh.

Wake up at the right time?  Sure do- for my schedule.  I'm working well past the point in the evening when you've had your warm milk and Metemucil.  So I'm not getting up at the crack of dawn, sir.

I work until at least 8PM. I'd love to go home an just fall asleep but that ain't happenin'. Me going to bed at 11 is like a 9-5er going to bed at 8.

What's a TBDBITL? Nevermind I googled it and yes I saw them.

I know the head of Apple video.  He's a huge Browns/Buckeyes fan.

Anyone note that one Walt W. is reprising another?

Question of the day: if you could eliminate one federal agency, which one would it be? #AskPA09 pic.twitter.com/ING0r5QgMx

CONGRESS! (yes, I know it's not a federal agency but that shouldn't exclude it from consideration!)

Ah, well, that's one of the threads I avoid.

Usually I do too. :)

You know the "head" of apple video?  As far as I know, there is no such role.  Most of the Apple execs are Duke fans for some sick reason.

I think I just fell in love with NBC-TV Buffalo sports host Lydia Dominick...

That'll be real fun for archaeologists in a couple of millennium.
