February 13, 201411 yr Gates Spends Entire First Day Back in Office Trying to Install Windows 8.1 REDMOND, WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Bill Gates’s first day at work in the newly created role of technology adviser got off to a rocky start yesterday as the Microsoft founder struggled for hours to install the Windows 8.1 upgrade. ... A Microsoft spokesman said only that Mr. Gates’s first day in his new job had been “a learning experience” and that, for the immediate future, he would go back to running Windows 7
February 13, 201411 yr ^ that's annoying. Everyone knows the onion is fake, but people don't expect it from the new yorker. Unless I'm missing something - does the new yorker frequently have fake stories? Are people seeing this and sharing it on social media like it was true?

I assumed people would figure it out from the fact that it included an official quote from Microsoft. I also assume a lot of people around the internet didn't catch on though.

February 21, 201411 yr War vet fired after using forklift to free stuck vending machine candy (Not actual footage)
February 21, 201411 yr ^ He disregarded safety rules in the warehouse. The story... either way...was that he violated workplace safety by performing an unauthorized maneuver on company property. Vending machines don't sit on skids and can't be safely picked up by a forklift. He risked thousands of damage to property and possibly an injury. If anyone has ever worked in a factory or warehouse, you'd know how strict the rules can be. The whole vet. backstory is unnecessary. You still play by the rules in civilian society.

February 24, 201411 yr I just discovered from watching the show "Pawn Stars", that Portsmouth, Ohio had an NFL team in the 30's. The truth really is stranger than fiction!!!
February 24, 201411 yr ^ Didn't the NFL branch out of an Ohio football league? I'd imagine that explains it.

March 5, 201411 yr Happy Mardi Gras, y'all! Happy Fat Tuesday to you as well! I just want to let everyone know that I had a King Cake for the first time, and got the baby. Supposedly this means you will have good luck. I am fully expecting to slip on a random spot of ice on my way home tonight.

March 11, 201411 yr Someone started a petition at WhiteHouse.gov to end Daylight Savings Time. http://wh.gov/lyM7M I swear it's a conspiracy by the coffee growers and energy drink makers to make us all need a jolt for a few days each spring so we stayed hooked on caffiene.
March 11, 201411 yr Would that "someone" be you? There was only one signature on it... well, now there is two. We do not live in an agrarian based society anymore.
March 11, 201411 yr Looks like you can only sign it if your initials fall into a four-letter span of the alphabet (JKLM). Or at least the first 3 signatures would seem to indicate that.
March 11, 201411 yr That's cause they're from Cleveland where everybody's names only consist of those letters... ... ... ::ducks::
March 11, 201411 yr Can't do that. The sun wouldn't come up until almost 10AM in December. Cincinnati Latest Sunrise in Winter Now: 7:45am Bangor Latest Sunrise in Winter Now: 7:00am Miami Latest Sunrise in Winter Now: 7:45am Indianapolis Latest Sunrise in Winter Now: 8:00am I don't know where it would be rising at 10:00 am if we pushed the sunrise/sunset back one hour in December
March 11, 201411 yr I can't get that data to support that the latest sunrise is at 7:00AM for Cincinnati. It came up at 7:57 today.
March 11, 201411 yr My apologies, that should have read 7:45 am for Cincinnati. The other numbers are accurate, though (on a rough estimate of those graphs). I have updated my original post. I was talking specifically about the latest sunrise in December. The time period that would actually be affected by extending daylight time to all 12 months. We wouldn't be pushing the sunrise up a 2nd hour today by extending the daylight time to the winter as well.
March 11, 201411 yr Would that "someone" be you? There was only one signature on it... well, now there is two. We do not live in an agrarian based society anymore. When a friend of mine was a talk show host in Fort Wayne, we used to make fun of farmers who thought cows could tell time. We briefly had year-long DST during one of the 1970s energy crises, and a lot of kids were indeed going to school in the dark. Some parents even told the school their kids were going to be late, period.
March 12, 201411 yr Been a Mac User so long, I've forgotten how much Microsoft sucks. Noticed my newish PC laptop that I use for traveling was slowing way down. Webpages took forever to load and fans cranked up during startup. I could barely run google maps or even open my mail. Webpages would frequently crash or be formatted wrong. A friend told me to disable or delete Window's Defender, a core part of the OS security. So I did and wow....all problems vanished. So basically, just a reminder of how Microsoft has provided me with a self destructive experience of their products. I don't know how important Windows Defender or any virus security is. I haven't gotten a virus since 2004 so I doubt it's important. Occasionally, I've run scans and checks every so many years but they've never turned up anything.
March 12, 201411 yr Does Defender have different levels of protection? Is it something you can just ratchet down?

I was lucky enough to get moved to one of those middle and high schools where the school day starts at night all winter long. Teens are so naturally full of energy very early in the morning you know.
March 13, 201411 yr Does Defender have different levels of protection? Is it something you can just ratchet down? Considering their attitude towards the XP expiration and the 8.1 upgrade not working across the board, probably not.
March 13, 201411 yr Just like Apple's crappy map program, there are often times you're better off using third-party software. Plenty of free antivirus programs for Windows. As for not using one? You're begging to have your system compromised.

Does Defender have different levels of protection? Is it something you can just ratchet down? It can be made to behave more reasonably if it's being overzealous. Make sure it's not set up to actively scan all the time, but still scan downloaded files, or thumb drives that are connected to the device. Have it do a complete scan no more than once a week during a non active use time. I usually set it up for a weekday at 3AM. You may also have other 3rd party applications hogging resources upon startup. You can press (Windows Key)+ R and type msconfig.exe into the text box and then click the startup tab to see what programs are starting up in the background. From there you can uncheck programs that you know you don't need to have ready to go all the time. Do not uncheck things if you are unsure what they are.
March 15, 201411 yr I did a render race using Ray Dream Studio on a Mac & a Dell/Win98 box. The Dell was a bit peppier than the Apple box but the Mac beat the WinDell pretty significantly. It didn't make sense so I looked at what all the PC was running & shut off a ton of crap, reran the render & speed was a lot better. I don't know if all the useless startup programs were set up by M$oft or Dell.
March 23, 201411 yr Oran Viriyincy @oranv Feb 20 “@World: Countries which don’t use the metric system pic.twitter.com/BNjUY6xUPN” Myanmar will soon be off this map leaving the USA and Liberia. March 23, 201411 yr A guy at a Cincinnati hardware store, Aufdemkampe's told me metric was just a fad & would not last. Aufdemkampe's is a church now.
March 23, 201411 yr We're doing it, just slowly. Think of all the things that have gone metric over the past 40 years: The military, cars, science/medical, liquor, the U.S. Forest Service, computers.
March 23, 201411 yr ^Huh? The United States uses the metric system. Granted, we don't use it for everything, but neither do most of the other countries.
March 24, 201411 yr turkey is at war with twitter. erdogan is at it again trying to stifle free speech and dissent. you can bet right wingers, including right wing westerners, are watching this play out: http://m.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2014/03/22/turkey-strengthens-twitter-ban-institutes-ip-level-block/ this hasty grafitti says something like 'let the bird fly,' but as of last night it probably doesnt work anymore:
March 24, 201411 yr Re Metric System, the UK still uses imperial for a few things (miles and stones are the first to come to mind) but has otherwise converted to Metric and a lot of other countries still use a few antiquated measures, but I don't know of any that use imperial close to as much as the US.
March 25, 201411 yr I was a senior in high school when this movie came out. It meant a lot to me because it spoke to me and my friends. We "got it." March 26, 201411 yr It's interesting to think for today's youth The Goldbergs is roughly the same time period away as The Wonder Years was for gen X. You understand that you don't have to remind us that we're getting old, right? ;-)
March 26, 201411 yr It's interesting to think for today's youth The Goldbergs is roughly the same time period away as The Wonder Years was for gen X. "Born to Run" will be forty years old this year (it was played live during 1974). It is twice as old as "Rock around the Clock" was when it came out. Forty years before, Rudy Vallee was big and Frank Sinatra was 19 years old.
March 26, 201411 yr It's interesting to think for today's youth The Goldbergs is roughly the same time period away as The Wonder Years was for gen X. I thought it was the equivalent of 1994-1999. 1968-1973 +20 years 1988-'93. That is if the show started this year. "After she got that tongue ring and those combat boots... I knew... things were going to be different with Winnie."
