I'm torn. Cincinnati is where I moved to be with my now wife, we recently had a kid and we love the daycare, we bought a house in Pleasant Ridge and have dived into the community and live to be involved.

Still, we feel the incredible pull to move back home to Michigan. As much as this city has given us, I've never really called it home, and yet, I know it better than where I grew up.

We're so far from our families and I worry about our parents health all the time. My dad's dad died when I was 5. I don't remember him, and I'd hate to have the same thing with my son and my dad. Particularly since we aren't living around the corner.

This is a growing problem for people with aging parents. I don't think my sister really felt anything but a nostalgic pull until my Mom recently became so debilitated with various health problems that I had to take her to the ER. She really didn't like living in Cleveland that much, and there's no way her husband would move back here, plus her kid is just starting college in WI, but I know she feels like she should be here and realizes how much she's missing out on. Not only with her and my Mom, but she has completely missed my son's life so far, just like I don't know my sister's kid at all. Seeing a kid once or twice a year is just not the type of relationship we had with our aunts, and it's sad.

My wife lost one sister a few years ago, and it was very tough to be far away. Her other sister lives on the same street as her parents. That might be a little too close, but they never miss anything in her niece and nephew's lives.

My brother lives in Oregon and I never see his 2 kids. I miss them, but there really isn't anything I can do, and they like the distance from my folks. He's been on the west coast for 15+ years. So, it's basically me for my mom and dad. They don't need me yet, but I don't want to wait until they do.

Pretty much my entire family, both sides, live in Philly.  When I was growing up here in Cleveland, I had no grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. close enough to have a very strong relationship with.  Although my dad has relocated, my mom and her husband and my brother are still here, and one of my sisters moved back home after 15+ years away.  I love the experience my kids are getting being raised around so much family.  Even if I hated Cleveland, I wouldn't move.

I can understand. If it hadn't been for our parents in the area my wife and I would never have moved back to Ohio. I never knew my grandparents as a kid because my mom's parents lived in Ireland and my dad's parents were back and forth between West Virginia and Arizona. My wife and I wanted to avoid that situation with our kids.

I know what you're saying about too close too though. My brother lives in a duplex with my mother and my brother in law is building a house next door to his parents. I need a little more space than that, but would prefer to be closer than the hour it takes to get to either my mom's or my in-laws.

Even if we do move back, we'll probably have to go to the west side of the state, and into a more suburban/almost rural area in order to cut down on commuting between two cities.

Wonder what's going on here

I had the craziest experience this morning...

I stopped at the Brueggers Bagels on Chagrin right near I-271, as I was coming back out to my car I see/hear a lady with a screaming baby off in the distance. As I'm just getting ready to open my car door the lady spots me and yells in a terrified voice "help me I've been hit."

I walk the 7 or so spots over and as I round the car to the passenger side where she is holding the crying toddler, I see the whole side of her car is scraped up. She was getting the kid out of the car when another car rolled (downhill) and smashed her and the toddler in between the door and the frame of the car. The hit and run car continued rolling till it went over the 2 foot embankment at the end of the lot and bounced off the side of a brick building.

Did I mention the car was driverless?

Turns out some ancient little old lady had parked her car, left it in drive, and went shopping. When she came out she did seem confused by her missing car, and several people from uphill were trying to help her look for it. When the police eventually arrived and tried to explain what had happened she was so out of it the fact that her car  HIT TWO PEOPLE was less important than trying to stick her spoilers back in place.

And that brings me to my point. I could have posted this off in whatever driving thread but I think here will get more notice; if you have relatives that are getting up there please please please keep an eye on them and their driving capabilities. Neither the lady nor the toddler were seriously hurt beyond a few bruises, but it could have been a lot worse very easily.

^ That's pretty insane.  Though how did the first collision happen?

Crazy story! Scary!

Though how did the first collision happen?

The car was "parked" in drive or perhaps neutral, and the car rolled down the hill.

That's just...

Cleveland Question: Are they grazing sheep on the patch of grass next to Quay 55? Did anybody else see this? Am I crazy? Wait don't answer the crazy part. I know the answer.

Yes

They've been doing this for about 4 or 5 years now

Yankees fan sues ESPN and MLB for $10 million for being caught asleep during a game....

Yep, a lawsuit will almost certainly restore your anonymity and dignity far more effectively than letting the story fade away and going on a friggin' diet!

Just checked the back of my White Sox tickets to confirm what I thought.  They can show your image, as embarrassing as it may be.  Even the commercial subscription plug is legit.

You're right, this guy just made it worse with the lawsuit. No way this video would have ever left a couple baseball message boards otherwise.

Sometimes I nap at cubs games, but that's normal so it's not shown on camera.

Thanks KJP. Your comment was so funny. Could not have say anything better myself.

On Mike & Mike, they read the back of the Yankees ticket and it said the same thing -- you are part of a public event where you can be photographed, etc.

EDIT: oh, and yes the guy's last name is "Rector." Can't make this sh*t up.

Well that was a tad syrupy.

I was wondering where that was going the first time I saw it. Seems like a Mapplethorpe piece. Baby Jesus covered in syrup.

its not about them showing his image. he's suing everybody for allegedly mocking him, which i am not sure about, but i don't think they did. defimation is a different animal. far as i have read the case was accepted, so there must be some merit. we'll see what happens. i dont think you would want announcers mocking you on tv while you are napping.

Stay classy, Austin ... wow lol

First semen, now expired meat ... wtf?

McDonald’s (MCD) and Yum Brands (YUM) are facing a fresh scandal featuring some not-so-fresh meat.

Chinese regulators are reportedly alleging that a local meat supplier for McDonald’s and Yum, whose brands include KFC and Pizza Hut, was found using expired meat. Both McDonald’s and Yum said they would stop ordering from the supplier, Shanghai Husi Food Co., a subsidiary of OSI Food Group.

I'm not sure that something that happened in China is really relevant.  The standards are different there and the corruption is an order of magnitude worse.

Any  American politician or corporate leader you want to select cares an order of magnitude more about American public safety than the typical Chinese official cares about the Chinese equivalent.

The Soviets were the same way.  That’s how Chernobyl happened.

I'm just joshing bro

Yeah a lot of American shareholders would make some joke about eating dog

Does anyone know of a website that will show you an area that is within a certain time-distance from a point? Basically creating a "walkshed" or "driveshed" from a point? For example, if I want to know the area I can reach by driving two hours or walking 20 minutes. Things like that

Not sure. You can do it with GIS software. Usually people cheat and use crow-flying distance instead of network-distance for walkshed. That would be an even worse indicator for driving times, where you should really consider speed limits, traffic signals, congestion at times of day, etc.

I've seen a service like this but it was only operating in select cities.

Do we have a general house rehab thread? I.e. For people to discuss home improvements and fixing up houses? I thought there was one but can't seem to find it.
