^Thanks!

Does anyone know of a website that will show you an area that is within a certain time-distance from a point? Basically creating a "walkshed" or "driveshed" from a point? For example, if I want to know the area I can reach by driving two hours or walking 20 minutes. Things like that

Not a website, but Microsoft MapPoint lets you do drivetime, but I don't think they do walktime.

That's got to be doubly painful, in an ironic way, considering California's drought.

^ i heard they just did a millions of dollars renovation on the gym and now its ruined by the flood. a shame.

i thought this was interesting:

Africa is indeed the second largest continent, about 20% bigger than North America which is third.

It's held back economically by the lack of natural ports and navigable rivers reaching into the interior, and the impassability of much of its terrain.  Also by corruption and tribal hatreds.

yeah, it's another victim of European colonial border rearranging, too

Tremendous natural resources in Africa too. China might be the one to tap it. They're already buddying up to some of the countries there.

The impact there is overrated.  Subsaharan African cultures did not develop written language or the use of draft animals on their own.

As for the borders, would neighboring nations from rival tribes be much better than those tribes in the same nation.

well, you have nations made up of multiple partial tribes & that spurs conflict.

So the Census Bureau assigns separate blocks to the actual water of the Mississippi River system?

^ and ^^ some of these seem like super silly census units. Based on my grandfather's ranch in Montana, many of these census units may have no actual population, but see some people during the light of day.

Easy, Mr. Lawyer. I'm not referring to lawyers. I'm referring to construction folks, especially at the public agencies which sponsor construction projects. For example, at a press conference I once asked ODOT folks why they don't call Dead Man's Curve "Dead Man's Curve" and even put up signs warning motorists they were approaching a curve with such a reputation. ODOT officials were aghast at the idea, as if I just said their children would never amount to anything in life. An ODOT PR guy said to me: "That's not what it's called. It's called the curve at the north end of the Inner Belt."

True story and that's what he said, word-for-word.

They tried to get the media to rename it the "Be Safe Curve" but that quite deservedly fizzled.

Ever notice that there seem to be no signs mentioning that SR 176's freeway section is called the "Jennings Freeway" even though (unlike the Willow Freeway) everyone calls it that?

I drove through Milwaukee yesterday (Interstate, I didn't actually stop), and they have more churches near downtown than any city I've ever seen. Look in any direction and you see a dozen steeples poking out of the skyline. It makes me really want to go there. Anyone else notice this?

I never really paid attention to the amount of churches but Milwaukee is an awesome city.

Pete: In fact, isn't "Milwaukee" an Indian name?

Alice Cooper: Yes, Pete, it is. Actually, it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which is Algonquin for "the good land."

Wayne Campbell: I was not aware of that.

I've been largely absent from here the last few months because of work stuff. Damn I have a lot of reading to catch up.

Did I ever mention ColDayManz did a drive-by throwing profanities at my gf and I a couple of weeks ago while we were minding our business walking through Downtown ... We were traumatized by the events that occurred.

Back on that Walter White, are you?

ColDay would never do that :).

Cat on subway tracks delays C train service in Brooklyn

By IVAN PEREIRA October 2, 2014

A feline wandering the subway tracks in Brooklyn caused an inconvenience for commuters during rush hour Thursday.

Manhattan-bound C trains went express between Utica Avenue and Hoyt-Schermerhorn stations between 6:10 and 6:50 a.m. after the cat was discovered at the Clinton-Washington station, according to MTA Spokesman Kevin Ortiz.

The cat made its way to the Lafayette Avenue station where a train operator caught it and removed it from the system, Ortiz said.

It appeared that the feline was not harmed during its underground adventure, according to the MTA.

I'm surprised this (apparently) isn't commonplace.  There's a whole other world under NYC.

This isn't really on topic for anything in particular, but I really felt compelled to share it, particularly here on UO. Why? Because the vast majority of posters on here are male and urban - either by residence, job location or both - and I'm sure none of you are this type of guy (at least I hope not). But also, and it was a long time ago, I know there was a discussion where a few members couldn't believe that I actually get harassed on the street as often as I do.

This video impacted me greatly. Quite honestly, this was like every day I have worked in and walked through downtown cleveland since I moved here in 1991, all compressed into a few minutes of video. Now, obviously there are a lot more people in NYC and I don't have THAT many instances in a single day here, but I don't think a single day has ever passed when I did not receive at least one comment like this, and I think men should be more aware of this going on. And, if you are NOT the type of guy to participate in this behavior, maybe start saying something to the guy who does, to get them to knock it off. I went four a 4.3 mile run at lunch yesterday. I am trying to train for a race. I wanted to take an urban run and not go down by the lake like I usually do if I run at lunch. I got comments and stares both going and coming, simply wearing running leggings and a baggy t-shirt and headphones. I think maybe men think women are making it up or something, and this video is a good way of showing it's not made up.

^ Every time I bring this up in the Public Square discussion, there seems to be a contingent that dismisses the problem outright - for whatever reason.  I agree that this is serious and my girlfriend and her friends have to deal with this crap way too much.

I guess the next issue is what can be practically done about this?  The people who will holler at a girl simply for walking past seem like they so far removed from most cultural norms that there is almost no way to reach them.

Also, I think this brings up issues of class and race, which most people aren't comfortable talking about.

Perhaps, yes. I can tell you that pretty much only white men have demanded that I "smile" when I pass them, and particularly older white men. The more lascivious comments tend to come from people of some kind of color, but certainly not always. I think it crosses race. Men seem to feel women are street entertainment, and should smile, be cheerful, welcome discussion with them, answer their questions, take their phone numbers and look pretty and happy while they do all of those things, and I think it's a broad male-based problem that needs to be fixed. How, I don't know, but shutting people down when you see them doing it - one guy to another, would be a nice start. I've never seen/heard that happen.

Yeah, well, I feel for you.  Street harassment just seems so bizarre/hostile that I can't even begin to understand it.

It's also a real shock if you didn't grow up in an urban environment. I was really not used to that when I moved here. I know it's not unique to cleveland or to any urban environment, but I don't get why it has to be like this.

Class for sure, in another sense of the word.  Race not so much except as it influences culture.  Your more conservative black men don't do this any more than similar white men do.

In college I had to walk a friend (who later became more) past the BP construction site where one of the steelworkers had literally tried to corner her walking to work  (I had an ace in the hole if he had tried to push it, I had just met his company owner at Mom's funeral a few months before).  I don't think I would ever been inclined to do such a thing anyway, but that learned me for sure how stupid it is.  I suppose it became a microcosm of later life, being the beneficiary of male d-baggery.

Dismissing it, which happens most in discussions of Public Square and the skywalks, basically writes off people with much more to contribute than all the cat-callers imaginable.

For example, Fox8 News just posted the video and there is already a sarcastic comment about how "terrible" the men are for saying "good morning" to a woman.

I have never, ever heard a man say "good morning" to another man like that. Never. They're not saying it to be polite or nice. They are trying to get your attention because you are a woman, and they want you to acknowledge them. It's not polite if you only do it to women you are trying to get the attention of. I don't know why this is not understood.

These societal problems piss me off so much. Particularly because not being an a-hole and not associating with a-holes is never enough to amount to anything. Ohh I've insulated myself from sexist, racist, ignorant, a-holes, mission not accomplished. They're all still out there being just as big of idiots without me. Don't read the comments is a lie, just like keeping your head down is a lie.

E Rocc[/member], I agree.  To be clear, the "issues" I was referring to in my original statement weren't an attribution of a behavior to one race or another.  Instead, my experience in the Public Square thread has been that if you bring up the poor behavior on the square, accusations of racism start flying without merit and shut the whole conversation down. This happens regardless the real, objectively poor quality of behavior (the fight I saw last week, the fight in the entrance of Tower City the week before, the catcalling, the profanity screaming teenagers, etc).  We seem to never be able to have this discussion because once we do, we get dangerously close to calling the criticism of antisocial behavior, racist.

That video is a bit surprising.  Putting any questions of authenticity aside (think of the James O'Keefe videos), I would like her to turn around once, though.  Is there something written across her butt?  There was some comment about that, I thought I heard.  Is her g-string showing?  Are we possibly dealing with a certain level of 'entrapment'?  That is one thing I am not sympathetic about to women.  If you wear a shirt with your boobs hanging out, guys are going to look at your boobs.  Don't come back with the "my eyes are up here" line.  You wanted them to look at your rack.  If you wear pants that have something written across the butt, guys are going to look at your butt.  And don't pretend for a minute that you didn't wear that to call attention to your rear!

FWIW, I find that NY'ers are on another level of cat-calling.  No Ohio city can compare.

I was never one to cat-call.  I probably only tried a few time to 'pick up those digits' in my youth with some girl I didn't already know one way or another.  Some of my friends on the other hand, well.....

That video is likely surprising because you don't experience that on a daily basis. It was noted that it was 10 hours of walking and these were likely the worst offenders.

Are you actually suggesting that she was asking for it? She is a young, attractive woman walking through Manhattan. I highly doubt any entrapment was used.
