Thank Jennifer Lopez’s Versace dress for Google’s image search

Step aside, Kim: Jennifer Lopez's Versace dress nearly did break the Internet in 2000.

Jennifer Lopez’s revealing Versace dress at the 2000 Grammys won’t go down in just fashion history, but apparently tech history as well — it’s the reason why Google had to invent the Image Search function on its website.

-After Jennifer Lopez graced the 2000 Grammys red carpet in that now-iconic plunging Versace number, the Internet was so overloaded with search requests that Google had no choice but to invent a new function: image search. “At the time, it was the most popular search query we had ever seen,” Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt wrote. “But we had no surefire way of getting users exactly what they wanted — J.Lo wearing that dress. Google Image Search was born.” [business Insider]

^What you had to do back then was go outside. Wasn't much fun to be had inside. Board games, books and vinyl were about it. There were like 4 good shows on TV. Had to leave the house.

^^  There was a website along these lines featuring Baltimore's issues during the late 90s that gave Browns fans a good deal of fodder during our flame wars.

Speaking of 1970s New York City.....

This pamphlet was handed to new arrivals at #NYC airports in 1975. http://bit.ly/1Gk0KpY

The article was inaccurate, even as it points out inaccuracies.

We went to NYC in the 70 and 80s on family trips.  It's so funny as I had "Welcome to NYC - Hands up MOFO" T-Shirt although I was not allowed to wear it.

The year I spent in art school was marked by a lot of "found" audio of this kind (usually found at a thrift store) or more often somebody's 35mm slides.  People had parties where everyone would come over to watch a slide show of several hundred random slides of a mid-1960s Hawaii vacation, or something like that.

I'm thinking about getting all my digital vacation photos transferred to slides and having a projector set up whenever my friends come over.

^ha those would be funny to have on in the background of a party or something. we used to get a reel projector and take out art/film/pop culture dept movies like les vampires and luis bunel and stuff like that and play them in the background at parties.

meanwhile, on the opposite end of the spectrum, at the movie theaters, i read somewhere they are starting to use laser projectors for digital films. i'm not sure i have ever seen that, but i guess the picture clarity is supposed to be especially amazing.

Before they switched the browser version of satellite imagery over to Google Earth, I could be found in my back yard weeding my garden. I also got caught by the Streetview cars last summer when Cincinnati imagery was updated - I've found myself in 5 places, so far. I try to actively avoid having my picture taken most of the time, but Google has had their way with me.

I don't mean to sound super woo, but to the people who have developed lactose intolerance, I have two questions. 1. Do you take a daily (or with regularity) proton pump inhibitor, such as Prilosec? and 2. Have you ever tried a program of resetting your gut flora?

Again, I'm seriously not trying to sound majorly woo. But I changed my life and my digestion back to what it was in my 20s, and was able to finally, after more than 15 years, get off PPIs with the use of probiotics.

Here's one article: https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01593800

Actual medical journal article (warning, complicated language, and not applicable to all of you as it's focused on studies of people with IBD):

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1774052/

I did all this after reading about how, as we age, we produce less good bacteria and then things like lactose intolerance can crop up. If you take PPIs, it's even worse.

I've been off PPIs now for probably 3 years. Feel free to message me if you want to discuss. No I am not selling anything. ha.

It drove by me in both Cleveland and Chicago but I did not end up on the website.

My roof is almost flat and was metal until last year when it was replaced with a rubber roof.  The metal was perfect for punking satellites because you could simply spell something out with that roofing goop.  I'm nervous that putting anything on the rubber will eat through it, and would amount to a $10,000 prank.

I sometimes take priolosic (or the generic equivalent) for unrelated issues of acid reflux my morning coffee gives me.  But as for cutting out most dairy, honestly, my digestion has never been better than it is now.  The lactose thing, as I stated in the other thread, started out very mildly.  Most of my issues came from eating melted cheese.  After thinking about it, I decided to just cut out dairy completely..... at least those dairy products which contain lactose (which I've spent the past 15 or so years getting better at identifying).  After all, what other mammal eats dairy once they are done growing?  It is unnecessary and was the source of many of my eating vices.  I wasn't getting much of a benefit from it and, by cutting it out, all that meant for me was no more Pappa John's Pizzas when I was drunk or a trip to Cookout (down South thing) for a milkshake when the bar closed.  No more cheesecake, DQ blizzards, Boston Cream Pie, Nachos Supreme, or about any of those calorie count busters on an Italian or Mexican menu.  Definitely no Indian food (which is much more unhealthy than most people seem to realize).

I get my calcium and protein now from other sources.  And there are plenty of dairy substitutes, so when the wife makes homemade pizza for the kids and myself, sometimes she will use a vegan cheese on mine or other times I'm just in the mood for a red pizza with extra toppings.  I use almond or soy milk for my cereal and protein shakes, which both also work just fine when an ingredient calls for milk.  Yogurt substitutes are also available.

Another thing I never knew but learned a few years ago due to my wife's obsession with the food network is that a lot of fried food uses milk as a component of the breading.  So no more KFC, onion rings, etc.  I do still sneak in the calamari, zucchini sticks and other breaded fried foods on occasion without much issue.

Have you ever looked at menu items and the affect on the calorie count once you add cheese or mayo or pretty much anything else which would include lactose?  It's eye opening.

I could take lactaid or use other methods, but I just prefer not to eat it.  I'm healthier, fitter, and happier without it in my diet.  In other words, it's not a problem I am looking to fix.  I don't have IBD.  I just don't eat most dairy like a vegetarian doesn't eat meat.  It's a choice for what I find for myself to be a healthier lifestyle.

Yes, I have. My baby had a dairy allergy that I discovered when he was about 8 months old and I BFd him until he was 2 so yeah, it's in EVERYTHING, I get it. For me, it was horrible to try to avoid. I eat a lot of cheese, but also whey and casein are in a lot of things that I eat and I was really unhappy not having it and having to work around it.

If it's working for you, and it sounds like it is, that's cool. I just wanted to posit my theories about gut flora. Probiotics have literally changed my digestion in a huge way and have saved me thousands of dollars a year that I used to spend on PPIs. I have a theory that like 80% of adults over 30 are in a bad cycle of taking them that they can't seem to get away from and it's because the stuff has altered their good gut flora.

So are you saying if you take probiotics, which I do, that the acid reducer is not necessary?  One less pill a day would be nice.  I take three.... the acid reducer, the probiotic, and a muti-vitamin.  I agree that the acid reducer gets you in a cycle and your body becomes dependent on it.  I just started taking probiotics this year and haven't tried cutting out the AR

I'm not sure about taking probiotics in capsule or pill form, but I know that most yogurt (except possibly those highly processed, sugary forms which try to do everything to mask the fact that they're yogurt) contains probiotics, no? I think Fage is the best one commercially made.

I've experimented with a variety. The best are the ones you get from a doc with a script that have to be kept in the fridge (pills) but they are VERY expensive and not covered by insurance. The static OTC pill forms are really insufficient and don't work at all.

I went with activia for a while and tried a number of products including kombucha and everything else. For me, the easiest to procure, ingest and that which delivers the best results are the Kefir drinks. I think it's really, really gross tasting so I drink it very quickly in the morning  or put it in a smoothie. But I can go several days without now, and then just hit it again daily when I start to have problems. I think it's the best and most easily digested of all the probiotics I've tried.

I took various PPIs daily for GERD for like 10 years - it's really not good to take them for extended periods.  A couple years ago my doctor said my stomach was "full of polyps", which was very concerning.  They biopsied and everything was fine, but I have slowly weaned off them.  At the time I was taking 40 mgs a day and now I just take 20 mg a couple times a month.

when you have GI disease like I do, many people like me spend their entire adult lives on them. Having hiatal hernia is sort of part and parcel of having Crohn's and Colitis and since your digestion doesn't work like everyone else's, most IBD patients live on them for years.

It was really hard getting off of them. I had to try it twice before I was able to get it to stick. The misery is bad when you wean off of them, but the probiotics made all the difference the 2nd time. I never, ever take them, ever. I drink enormous amounts of coffee, wine, bourbon, eat whatever I want.

Hmm - maybe I should try probiotics!  Ha!  I can eat all the cheese I want but yogurt doesn't agree with me, so I wouldn't be able to get probiotics that way.

I have the hiatal hernia too which causes the GERD.  My doctor was pretty impressed I was able to wean down so much.

I think a lot of people with digestive issues don't realize how much ensuring a sufficient amount of fiber is in your diet can help.  Of course, it doesn't cure the various forms of IBD..... I am more talking about people who simply have problems digesting certain foods and constantly deal with constipation, bloating, etc.

Unrelated to above, I am legally divorced now and handled my entire divorce as a DIY, with some amazing, surprising help from a woman I call "the unicorn" at the court offices, who helped me out a great deal.

If anyone has questions about the process and is thinking of going the DIY route, feel free to PM me. The reality of the situation is that while the posting of all the forms online "should" make it "easier" to DIY, it's really not easy at all. That being said, I was impressed and surprised at how quickly the process went once I had everything together and was able to file. Between filing and the actual divorce was less than two months.

I would not recommend the DIY process to anyone who can afford a lawyer. But the costs of DIY are very, very attractive.

^lol okay, I guess there are least a couple of people!

^ When I saw the address I immediately worried about Burp Castle, my favorite bar in the world. Fortunately it was a few buildings away and I imagine it's fine. Unfortunately, Pommes Frites appears to be completely gone.

I'm always surprised at how something like this, or the Chinatown explosion a year or two ago, result in no deaths. I'm guessing that in the middle of the day the apartments are empty for the most part.

yes, I'm sure Burp Castle is safe . I think it's still there, as it's still in business, no? It's a miracle there weren't any fatalities, although 4 people are critically injured. As an indication of how rumors can spread, I had initially heard a report, second hand, that a waitress in a Sushi restaurant on that block had claimed that some man came in to use the restroom and was in there for just seconds before running out, immediately preceding the explosion. But now suspicions are pointing to workers in the building, and ConEd (New York's much hated utility), who reportedly inspected the building for a possible gas leak (and found nothing wrong) just one hour before this disaster. I'm sure the lawsuits are going to pile sky-high from this!
