^The cool thing about Ohio, is that you choose your party at the voting booth. I've voted for both the Democratic primary and Republican primary based on which one has more importance that year. There's no way I was going to vote in the Democratic primary in 2012 when Obama was going to be the nominee. Since I have no intent of going into politics, it doesn't really matter to me if people see I switched sides a bunch.

I know some people on the techy end of the spectrum who have little to no identifiable information online on purpose. They are constantly online and participate in forums, gaming, etc. but manage to stay completely anonymous. It takes effort, and it's something I don't think will be possible in 10-20 years.

Of course, in Ohio it's pretty easy to dig up property and voting records, so the only true way to stay offline completely is to never vote and never own property. One would also have to manage to never get arrested, as it's pretty easy to search court records as well. The vast majority of people aren't aware of how readily available many public records are, though it varies substantially from county to county and state to state. In Hamilton County, it takes about 20 seconds to find someones property record. Voting records are a bit more complex, but the state offers a simple delineated text download that I get every year that has names, addresses, and record of which elections (and which party primary) everyone voted in. It's always fun to look up a very politically opinionated person and find out they haven't voted since 2000, or tell someone exactly how much they paid for their house when they don't want to tell you.

Incidentally my property record was correct earlier in the year but is now incorrect.  It says I live at 906 Klotter Ave., an address that does not exist, and that I bought my house for $0 from a relative, which is $125,000 less than what I paid.  I razzed Dusty Rhodes a few times on Facebook and I'm suspicious that he ordered his goons to mess with my online info.

Our American Government teacher in the 12th grade liked to find a flunkie or otherwise older student and read out their voting record in class (with their permission). This was back in the analog days, so he'd go down to the courthouse to get 'em. As one of the aforementioned flunkies, he read out my voting record in the 1997 elections during class to show the students that you don't have much privacy when dealing with the government.

It will be possible, it will just require more effort.  It's akin to warheads and armor, as the latter is by necessity reactive (yes, sometimes literally) it inevitably falls behind.

Winding down my last day working for the City of Cincinnati. It's been fun.

11 showings on the house since thursday, including one couple twice, here's hoping there's an offer soon. I'm getting exhausted trying to keep my toddler occupied all day while running back and forth to make sure the house is set up okay between showings.

I drove the streetcar route today, I think Rhinegeist may have to find a new place to park their trucks.

Wow.....

I can't help wondering if they came with a Garrr-On-Tee.

Or if anyone will get the reference.

Oy, you, and since I know what you're talking about, me are old.

I got it. I used to watch his show with my Mom.

Soooo....I moved to Cleveland for my girlfriend because she's from here and got into business school up here. Before we moved, I had absolutely no ties to Cleveland but I was optimistic and looked at it like it was going to be a fun adventure. I managed to get a job with the same company, coincidentally a 5 minute Rapid ride away from where we live in Shaker Sq. and our apartment is great and the neighborhood is great but I'm starting to get lonely and bored. I miss my friends in Columbus! I need new friends up here. I'd like to make some new friends; I was thinking about joining some kind of organization other than my Sexaholics Anonymous meetings. Anyone have any ideas? I'd like to volunteer.

Go bug MTS! Doesn't he live in Shaker Square?

It's not anonymous if you tell everyone.

What are your interests?  Other than sex, of course.

Moving to any new city can be tough once you are out of school and even tougher some might say when your significant other is from that City.  She has friends and you don't.  Our situation was similar as I moved back here to go to school with my wife (then fiancé).  I had all my old neighborhood friends some of whom go back to the 'sandbox days' and met new friends at school while she toiled away at her job supporting me.  It really wasn't until we had kids that she built a solid group of friends, outside of people she met through me.  Kid functions are indeed a great way for adults to make friends.  Most of my wife's local friends were met through school, sports leagues, etc.

I suppose volunteering would be one way.  But activities are another possibility, such as things like critical mass rides, adult sports leagues, etc.  If you love animals, I know the APL is always looking for volunteers and they have lots of them.

There is always...... http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,30291.0.html

There are a number of professional networking things. Look to LinkedIn. They have happy hours and get togethers, etc.

I would also just look for events you want to go to and go to them, you'll meet people at those events and they already have something in common with you. Like Sterle's is having a big BBQ event on their patio on the 12th. If you went to that, you would meet all kinds of people who love food, beer, etc.

Whatever your interests, find events around those interests and go to them.

Sexaholics Anonymous was a joke, hehe.

It's weird that you mentioned APL; I was just on their website last night looking for a pet to adopt and I was considering volunteering there. I have a soft spot for animals. I'm going to have to go with getting a cat. I'm a little bit more of a dog lover but Montlack Realty won't let me have one unless of course I try to scam them and go through the effort of trying to prove to them that I'm legally blind but that sounds like too much work just to get a dog in my apartment.

I appreciate the ideas. I'm trying to figure out what exactly my interests are. Food and beer are definitely a few big interests. I'm also a computer nerd. Some of the really typical things that guys are interested in though, like sports, I am not.

If you are on FB, join the Cleveland Dining Club, which is called Cleveland Eats on FB. They go out once a month to various restaurants. Join the Northeast Ohio Foodies page as well. Lots of talk there about food, food-related events, etc.

^^we just adopted a cat from there this past weekend.....

I go to that Morton Williams store all the time! That guy is there year round. It's his permanent settlement. A few months ago I was going there late at night and I saw a live chicken walking around near the entrance. I wondered if it was his. lol

wow, not one mention of 9/11 on 9/11. I guess we don't have to worry about terrorism anymore, right? :|

A scene from Painesville's 9/11 observance today--

Without the discussion getting too out of hand, I think the reason people don't like to bring up 9/11 is because of what happened in the years following it.

Over time everything dilutes a little in conversation. People can drive now who were only 2 years old in 2001.

Just like how Pearl Harbor was "a date which will live in Infamy". Yet ask most people and they don't know what month it is in. Not saying it isn't important, but it does drift out of the spotlight over time.

The biggest difference between the two in terms of public remembrance is that the terrorist attacks are referenced to by their date. It will be difficult for the public to forget that. And it was all recorded on live TV. Something Pearl Harbor does not have.

To them it's something that's always been.

I see what you mean, but 14 years after Pearl Harbor Japan had been effectively subdued as a threat (in a lot less than 14 of course). As horrific as 9/11 was, sadly today Islamic terrorism has grown to a level unimaginable in 2001. ISIS makes Al Qaeda look like Quakers. This is why it's important to remember and be vigilant.

Of course, but it's a problem that can't be "solved" by military action like Japan and Germany in WWII. The organization is much more fluid and I doubt we will ever see it defeated. al Qaeda, ISIS, etc may disappear eventually, but the threat will morph into another group.

(By the way, I'm not saying we shouldn't have some involvement in fighting groups like ISIS, just that the underlying threat can never be defeated)

Al Qaeda remains far more dangerous.  ISIS is more insane, but that cuts both ways.  They lash out at will and at targets of opportunity.  AQ plans, prepares, and coordinates.  They also have a clear mission:  to pick a fight between the Islamic world as a whole and the free world.

Obama and some of the nuttier Islamophobes have one thing in common:  they apparently don't see this objective.  Bush did, and acted accordingly.

^ you could replace all those groups and insert israel and what you said would be equally as valid.

welcome to the middle east.

Do you guys remember Tom Anderson, the Beavis and Butt-head character that was like an early sketch of Hank Hill? That’s all I can think of when I see Jeb Bush talk — that he’s like an early, incomplete sketch George W. Bush from an alternate cartoon universe.

H.W. really looked like a mole.

IN other news, I can imitate Tom Anderson and Hank Hill's voice with uncanny accuracy.  If the guy who does the voice ever got fired, I could be come rich.

Here's a brewing mess:  Facebook is exploding with posts about Huntington Bank double posting transactions, apparently last night.  No work from the MSM yet.

Oh, wow. That happened to me. I was gearing up to call Dave's to say "WTF?!?!".

I will hold off for now. Thanks

Huntington Bank customers double charged due to processing issue

Many Huntington Bank customers tell Fox 8 they woke up to negative balances and extra charges on their checking accounts Wednesday morning.

According to Huntington Bank’s social media Twitter account, it’s all due to a processing issue that happened overnight

http://fox8.com/2015/10/21/huntington-bank-customers-overcharged-due-to-processing-issue/

Heh.  I do bank at Huntington, but apparently I wasn't in the line of fire for this because I use an ATM maybe every other month, and I basically never use my card as a debit card.  (Only on my occasional Aldi runs because they don't take credit cards.)  Still, wow, major IT glitch.

It was online bill payments that double hit for me.

HAHA, I really like that.

I'll get to the jet pack thing in a second, but I'm going to rant for a minute about a line at the beginning of that article.

Dubai is not "oil rich." Fossil fuels account for less than 2% of Dubai's economy. It hasn't been oil-rich in decades and the reason for its sudden rise into prominence was to offset for the fact that they WEREN'T swimming in oil money and knew their economy needed to be based on something entirely different. If Dubai is "oil rich" so are a huge amount of the states in the US.

/rant.

That being said, I'm about to go to Dubai and light a fire in a tower to be rescued by jet pack. That's fantastic.

Isn't a lot of the "oil rich" not from the actual resources but a lot of the trading business being based out of there?

Even then it's not a huge chunk of their economy. They're very much a services, real estate (though not so much these days thanks to their massive housing market crash), and tourism economy. Oil and its related trade do happen, but aren't what are bringing the money to the Emirate.

Isn't a lot of the "tourism" people working in the surrounding areas (aka oil) going somewhere with laxer laws?
