Good thing there are more gaming websites than all other types of websites combined (excluding porn).

I've been marathoning X-Files and am surprised that season 5 treated date rape and Cosby rape as comedy. One episode involves a shape changer who impregnated half a dozen women after impersonating their husbands; the other episode depicts a Frankenstein monster character drugging and impregnating two women who give birth to two-headed babies.

These episodes are comedic in nature, the villains are  portrayed as goofy and sympathetic, and the victims are not really traumatized in the slightest. It's just interesting how 20 years later there is no way this would be played laughs due to evolving sensitivities.

we were watching a couple 1970s era love boat reruns recently, the ones where julie your cruise director has the short dorothy hamill bowl haircut and hadn't gotten all coked out yet. lets just say they might as well rename it the rape boat. and the men are always so condescending too. almost unbelievable.

Which episode number was that? I don't recall it being that bad but it's been some months since I rewatched season 5.

I kind of cringed at season 10's second episode where they had the encounter with the transgender woman that was hooking. I'm not too crazy about the whole PC culture (have you looked at OKCupid's "gender" list lately?), but the jokes about transgenders made me cringe. They could have just used a woman as a hooker and been just as well off, but I'm sure someone would have complained about the stereotyping of women as hookers (rolls eyes).

Rape Boat! dead.

Rape Boat! dead.

take my advice and don't accidentally fall into nostalgia and watch like we did. my spouse was livid with it. it was the opposite of relaxing tv!

Now I have to check it out. I do have a wry appreciation of all things 70s, even things that are horribly politically incorrect.

Let's be real, was it worse than 50 shades of grey??

i dk, do they grab women by the arm and jerk them around, stalk them around and around and mack endlessly and do the women apologize constantly for everything, etc., etc. on that show?

The Post-Modern Prometheus is the Frankenstein episode TBideon is talking about, it's one of my favorites.  I think the other episode he's talking about is Small Potatoes from Season 4.

I got done rewatching every episode just a few days before Season 10 came out (I had to binge 8 and 9 over a few days after having done 1-7 slowly over a few months). The transgender jokes in the recent one were relevant IMO because of the way they fit into the story of the Were-Monster.

I just read the transcript of that episode and it now makes sense. It's surprising how many reviewers missed that connection (including myself).

The Amazon Echo is a pretty fun device despite its limitations. Sort of a substantially scaled down Siri but more user friendly. My elderly parents are using it a great deal, and I have to imagine every household will eventually have one (or a second/third generation model).

Do any of you guys have an account with social explorer? My girlfriend is doing a ten page essay in her Urban Studies class on Shaker Heights. A historical, political, physical, social analysis as well as information about population trends through time and I remember when I had to do projects like this, social explorer was one of my best resources. I really wish I had a login code right now. She's freaking out because it's due Friday and she hasn't started it yet so I told her I would help her do the research. Also, any good/interesting resources you guys might have, please PM me with info and it would be much appreciated :) I'm already aware of the basics, such as the Census Bureau website and I have access to databases through her university but being steered in the right directions would certainly help :) Luckily, Shaker is probably one of the top ten most documented suburbs in America. I'm really glad she didn't get stuck with having to do a ten page essay on Solon or some boring sh!thole like that. Heh.

I think this is the most on topic post of the "Off Topic" thread.

Wow, that reporter sure knows how to get a "scoop." The doctor prescribed anti-biotics? How lovely. The bacteria in her six year old system is already developing a resistance to antibiotics for no reason because ER doctors won't spend more than five minutes with patients to probe them with questions about their health and lifestyle. It's so much easier to just throw a bottle of Amoxicillin to them and call it a day.

I've got no problem with her. She seems rather personable in interviews I've seen. I don't follow UFC though

the most recent daytona 500 shot on long expired film:

Racing has led to lots of spectacular photography over the years. That's why so many of the cars used to be sponsored by film companies.

Thanks for posting.  That was wow!

Looking through those I was certain that it was different types of expired film.  Then I read the description and my suspicion was confirmed.  Also, I think digital is a bigger pain in the ass than film, because there is a tendency to shoot a ridiculous number of shots, and going through all of them is unbelievably time-consuming.  Also, it is very difficult for digital from different situations to not look the same.  Looking back, there was often a lot of effort put into getting film shot in different situations to look the same for a specific project.

I've heard that well over 90% of the pictures taken, ever, are digital.

If you're not an expert you avoid making mistakes on the entire run.  I had one of the earliest commercial digital cameras and you needed a lot of light otherwise any motion led to blurring.

If you think about it, a lot more was at stake when you used film. Film is expensive and you have a limited amount of film on you so it's important to only take shots of something remarkable or at least something worth what you're paying in film. Something that is actually interesting, beautiful, or would bring back a lot of memories of a person, place or event when you refer back to it. Everyone is a photographer now and so there's billions or even trillions of meaningless photos everywhere. Occasionally though, you'll come across an iconic photograph or video taken from a smart phone and it's usually incredible because someone conveniently had their phone handy in a situation where there wouldn't be a professional photographer on some kind of mission. Photography now is definitely a lot different than it used to be. Hell, just looking at old photos, the "tone" is a lot different. Pictures just seem too commonplace now to have much meaning anymore.

I've never been to a Nascar race but looking at those photos instantly reminded me of visiting family in Daytona Beach and also going there for spring break. You can almost feel the perfect weather by just looking at the photos; the sun beating down on you while you feel a cool breeze coming at you from the nearby ocean (which is often times accompanied by a sh!t ton of sand that ends up in your eyes...) Ahh...Florida sounds great right now when you're an Ohioan in March :(

Digital photography has been one of the more impactful innovations of our time.  It has transformed everything from manufacturing quality assurance to medicine to dating.

The safety net that is Photoshop encourages people to take bad, poorly lit, poorly composed photos because they assume they can just fix it later. I'm guilty of this all the time. Usually you can salvage something from a bad shot if you're shooting in RAW, but it can take a long, long time.

That's a valid point but I hope you could have inferred from my post that I was referring to photography as an art form.

Together again.

One would think this would go without saying, but the best and fastest way to kill a first date is to be rude to the bartender/server. Surely most men know this.

I wonder if there is an app that can use a phone's internal sensors to determine if a curse has been placed on you and then recommend another app to help remove it.

Late last century, I was at Chester's in Independence one time on a first date and the waitress dumped some gravy all over my lap.  I was mellow about it in because I knew it was an accident and I can be clumsy myself.

Didn't know Nikki had worked as a waitress, but I did find out later.....

Speaking of iphones, mine autocorrects Venmo to venom.

I can't stop watching reaction videos to the second trailer for Captain America Civil War. It's pure joy every time someone sees Spider-Man show up.

I've shot NASCAR, and it's one of the hardest things to do. You need insane shutter speeds to freeze the cars, focus tracking is really tough, panning at the same speed as the cars for background motion blur is tough, and the environment is brutal. It has always been one of the hardest types of photography and pushes camera gear to its technical limits. If you think it's loud in the stands, just wait until you're inside the tracks...

You also get hit with oil and pieces of rubber from the tires. You leave covered in a dirty film, and your gear can get really messed up. What's really crazy is the Indy 500. Not only is it very loud and intense, but everyone is completely wasted by noon...it's one of the most purebred "real America" events in the country. There is not really anything else quite like the Indy 500. It's like mixing a Midwestern college frat party with an EDM show with a country concert with a southern costume competition. It seems like a great place for people to hook up.

Next time I go to Indy, I just want to shoot the parties. Indy Star always puts up a bunch of great party galleries (that's one of the best surviving papers in the Midwest). BTW, Skrillex is going to Indy this year. It's going to be a Molly zoo out there:

The state doesn't even have "bars", so the freedom of a BYOB and liquor drink-anywhere-on-the-premesis (except for "hot" areas where race cars are in motion) event such as a speedway is a chance to really let loose. Most major auto races still let you bring in your own liquor. Smuggling drugs into the parking areas and campgrounds is cake.
