At what point do all the straight people ruin a gay bar?

When it closes!  Damn breeders!

Once we breed do we even go out anymore? Maybe that's what kills the gay bar: lack of straight business.

Cleveland's Traxx, u4ria, Two Steps Down, Chaps, The World, Aqualon were all gay bars that were hugely popular with all people, regardless of race, color or sexual orientation.

And doesn't that make us both feel so open minded as we think we should be? And don't gay guys appreciate the aesthetics of an occasional hot straight guy in the bar? And don't straight guys who chose to go there subconciously feel flattered when they're hit on by someone they have no interest in? I hear people like you use the term "MY people" a lot. As much as I really do embrace all people, it would be unrealistic to not acknowledge that it is your people and there's some dynamics that come with different groups of people.

This is turning into a topic again already. There must be a half-dozen threads on sexual orientation and related topics already buried here.

I'm pretty good at inane off-topic comments, but c'mon, guys, somebody else break this chain. :-D

Time to go into Tourett's mode!

Ok, how'd you like to be one of those people that worked for Crookwell, I mean Blackwell, who are supposed to pay back their bonuses they received which he wasn't authorized to give them (cover of cleveland.com).  Given that Blackwell has to pay if the people don't pony up, I can't imagine any of them are going to give back any money.

^ :wtf:

Edit, nevermind, i went to Cleveland.com

No one likes an Indian Giver!!!!

No, white people made an attempt at Reggae. It's called Ska and it sounds like absolute sh!t.

how did i miss this whole ska discussion?  David, ska predates reggae and while I rarely listen to it anymore, it's still my music.  check the skatalites, laurel aitken, early toots and the maytals, even early bob marley and the wailers, etc.  it'll sound more like 50's American rnb than the poppy punky shit that most people associate with the genre.

and jmeck, nice scofflaws video (i never knew there was one and i was a huge fan).  but how can you dismiss the slackers?  by far the most soulful, true-to-roots band out there today now that hepcat is no longer around.

I had no idea it went that far back, I'm only familiar with the revivals; artists you still hear being played today. I like 50s RnB, I'll check them out later. Thanks for heads up.

Aye. I about drove off the road when I heard this back in 2001: The Slackers discussing their music's roots on NPR's All Things Considered: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1126373

My dislike for the Slackers centers around my dislike for Victor Ruggero (or however you spell it), who I see as a phoney character.  Any time someone young dude comes along and advertises themselves as "authentic" and true to some bygone musical style or other cultural form, they're setting themselves up for criticism from people like me.  The whole problem with being a "trad" ska band was that the music wasn't from here, it was from Jamaica.  Being Americans playing tribute to our music from the 60's is a lot different than being well-fed Americans playing tribute to music from Jamaican ghettos.

Back to Vic. He takes his music way too seriously and doesn't look like he knows how to have fun.  I don't like his singing voice or what he says.  I've seen them play a few times over the past 10 years and every time he has to take time out between songs for a political rant.  The rest of the band are a bunch of low-key dudes.  The band needs to kick Vic out and recruit Steve Jackson.  Ha.

I can't get that Slackers link to work.

I saw Hepcat once, they were definitely better than The Slackers, maybe the best thing to come out of Cali since Black Flag:

I remember the whole thing with the Bosstones was that they were more or less the biggest group going around in the underground and opening for them was a pretty big deal since they were always drawing over 1,000 from about 1994 on.  You could hear a collective shriek of agony from ska fans nationwide when "The Impression that I Get" came out.

Now, just to irritate Kingfish a little more, a Pietasters clip:

Also, The Pietasters profess to be major disciples of King Records, of the Cincinnati Sound, and even played with James Brown before he kicked the bucket.  Honestly I'd rather be playing King Records covers than Studio One covers!

I love the Bosstones (old stuff and newer) but have never understood the "purists" of any genre who accuse a band of "selling out" when they do something remotely commerical

Of course, with Dr. Dre, the Bosstones and Pietasters, Dropkick Murphys, My Chemical Romance, Lush, Relient K, Sophie B. Hawkins, Starz, Li'l Jon, Nelly, The Raspberries, Bruce Springsteen, Metallica, Tchiakovsky, The Buckinghams, Bone Thugs & Harmony, Frank Sinatra, Bowling for Soup, and The Pipettes all occupying space on my Treo, my musical tastes might be a bit more diverse than some peoples.

Some of the very best stuff happens when a band covers a song from outside it's nominal niche.  The Dropkicks doing "The Kids Are Alright" comes to mind, or Sid Vicious's "My Way".

My dislike for the Slackers centers around my dislike for Victor Ruggero (or however you spell it), who I see as a phoney character.

I've tipped a few with Vic. He's the real deal.

I can't get that Slackers link to work.

Yeah: Real Player. If anybody knows how to convert this to an MP3 I'd be eternally grateful.

I saw Hepcat once, they were definitely better than The Slackers, maybe the best thing to come out of Cali since Black Flag:

Hepcat were definitely entertaining. A little too traddy trad trad for me. What I appreciate about the Slackers is that they're using the Jamaican style as a backdrop, not a gimmick or a pose. You could take Vic's songs out of the genre and they'd still work. Compared to what passes (passed) for ska music's third wave, he's about the only respectable songwriter out there.

Now, just to irritate Kingfish a little more, a Pietasters clip:

The Pietasters don't irritate me, they just make me bored and sleepy.

Also, The Pietasters profess to be major disciples of King Records, of the Cincinnati Sound, and even played with James Brown before he kicked the bucket.  Honestly I'd rather be playing King Records covers than Studio One covers!

Says you: I like it all.

Since we are still kind of on the music topic, *GASP* OH NO WE ARE ON TOPIC.. :-D

Anyway, why is it now I finally discover the greatness of Rise Against??  :?

I just got The Suffer & the Witness yesterday.. I LOVE it. I saw them at  Warped Tour from like 500 feet away two summers ago but I never really listened to them.

I saw them last year at Wolstein.  They weren't as good as MCR, who put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen, but they were damned good.

It was my niece's first concert ever and I had to tell her they aren't all that good.

Wanna know what's on my iPod?

I'm so badass I don't even own an iPod.

F'real.

^Yeah well I'm so badass my iPod got stolen

^Trading your iPod for a signed mint vinyl of Jack Dupree's Blues from the Gutter, now that would be badass.

No time tonight.  I'm heading up to the practice space for a night of tickling the B-3 and Yamaha stage piano.  After I pick up a 6-pack of high-life, of course.

Neither do I....with a 2G SD card my Treo's just as good an mp3 player without worrying about using I-tunes software.  Hell, I even have a cassette adapter for it so I can play stuff in my car without bothering to get a CD player.

I heard on 'TAM this morning that ringtone sales are down.  The announcer immediately reached the conclusion that they are becoming as passe as payphones.  Hmmm....or could it be that people figured out how to make them?

For those who remember, he was the young boy who gets the girl in the film Love Actually. For those who don't, Thomas Sangster may yet become a household name. The sixth-former from south London, the Guardian can reveal, has been chosen by Steven Spielberg to be his Tintin for a three-movie adaptation of the boy reporter's adventures. The trilogy is likely to give the 17-year-old the same profile as Daniel Radcliffe, aka Harry Potter, or Elijah Wood, who shot to international stardom as Frodo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings series.

O, Opening Day in Cincinnati. Not only is it THE opening day for all of baseball and one of Cincinnati’s greatest traditions, but it also the day of one of the most hallowed events in  yearly metal tradition.  Since the mid-1970s, on baseball’s Opening Day, Ronnie James Dio has stood high atop Mt. Lookout holding a bottle of Coors Light that has a label featuring himself holding a bottle of the very same beer screaming “Look Out!” while atop Mt. Lookout, while he himself screams “Look Out!” as any Rainbow/Sabbath/Dio song featuring the words “Look Out!” plays. He is truly a Man on the Silver Mountain.

If it wasn't for rock and roll, Ronnie James Dio would die a virgin.

(My girlfriend, whom I had to tell who Brett Michaels was even after she started watching "Rock Of Love", agreed with this assessment)

Just to clarify, I didn't pay for my iPod. About a year ago, I was asking a friend for some input on MP3 players and he said "would you want my iPod Mini? I just ordered the new model yesterday and my old one will probably just collect dust so if you want it...". :-)

I don't think that adds to my iPod street cred, though  :|

I just saw Super Hero Movie...  Do yourselves a favor and don't waste your money.  It's funny but soo short.   :x

I have high hopes for the Tin Tin trilogy.  Thanks for the update.

Seems quiet on here. Here's a bout of randomness: I hate PennDot's planning section of their website because it hasn't been updated in over year. :x

And I don't know about you guys, but it's supposed to be in the high 50's, low 60's all week here in central PA. Yeah, some rain too, but it's ok.

It was nice yesterday, I had the top down at lunch and going home.  Today we have the rain, and the temperature is supposed to drop all day.

At least it was nice for the Home Opener....and the Indians held up their end of the bargain.

What I like is that it's 8:30 in the AM and it's almost 60. :-)

Gee Willikers, I just made a big Heroin deal, I suppose Uncle Sam should get his cut

The IRS is so horribly inefficient that I highly doubt they would report information to the DEA. I'd be curious to know if reporting illegal sales has ever given someone leverage in court.

On November 28, 1996, the 39th and final episode of Quack Pack was aired. The series later aired on Toon Disney, but later went off the air entirely. Episodes can be found on VHS and DVD, such as Quack Pack Volume 1 (English/French DVD), Quack Pack: Alien Attack! (VHS), Quack Pack: Ducks Amuck! (VHS), and Quack Pack: House of Haunts (VHS).

The Lake Tharthar Raid was an Iraqi commando raid on a large insurgent training camp at Lake Tharthar on March 23, 2005.

Background

The training camp, located in a remote region near Lake Tharthar, which is next to the Sunni Anbar and Salahuddin provinces, was the largest guerrilla training camp that had been discovered in the war by then, according to Iraqi officials. The camp was shared by Ba’ath party loyalists and members of Al-Qaeda. The insurgents had planned to attack the city of Samarra, which was located some 55 kilometers east of the lake, with a large number of car bombs. Most of the insurgents came from Arab countries, but men from the Philippines were also later confirmed to be among the dead insurgents. The remote site contained ramshackle huts and tents, along with boats used by insurgents to cross the lake. The camp was well defended with guard towers, bunkers and barbed wire. There was an estimated 120 insurgents in the camp at the time.

The Raid

Between 500 and 700 Iraqi commandos were involved in the raid. As they approached the camp and came to only about a hundred meters from the camp the commandos encountered heavy fire from around 100 insurgents. The Iraqi commandos called in support from the American military, which sent in troop reinforcements and attack helicopters. The battle lasted two hours. The American air support killed 50 insurgents and the commandos killed another 34 during the battle. Many of those killed were reportedly Saudis and Syrians. The insurgents evacuated their positions about two hours into the battle. It was estimated that some 30 insurgents managed to escape during the fighting by boat across the lake. Helicopter pilots observed some twenty boats escaping during the raid. This was because the assault force conducted the raid prematurely. The area was not surrounded by security forces until after the fighters made their escape.[citation needed]

Aftermath

Seven Iraqi commandos were killed in the raid and six were wounded. In addition 84 insurgents were killed and the commandos said that they captured one Algerian. After entering the camp, Iraqi commandos found non-Iraqi passports, training publications, propaganda documents, weapons and ammunition. According to the papers found some of the insurgents were: Moroccans, Algerians, Sudanese, Saudi, Syrian and there was even one Egyptian. Iraqi forces also seized 30 boats at the camp which were used at the lake.

Oh god, that was a classic example of the Disney Afternoon abusing its monopoly powers.

Duck Tales was the sh!t.

Remember captain planet? Those kids (planeteers) all had those cool rings with powers to summon captain planet when they raised their fist in the air. They'd put their rings up and be like "Wind!".. "Fire!". Then the Cambodian kid put his ring up and was like "heart!"

Goooo planet!

It's baseball season.

I love those old games. I miss the Mario/Dunk Hunt game. Minus that d@mn dog. He always came out of the bushes and laughed at me whenever the pseudo-ballistic ammo from my NES handgun missed a flying pigeon. I had dreams of jumping inside the tv and beating his @ss with a rolled up newspaper.

Yay.. the Off Topic Thread is now a sticky!!!
