I did call the ombudsman today and they said they'd pass my complaint on to the relevant department and that someone would call me. If I don't hear something within a few more days, I'm going to escalate it.  It's unconscionable that this guy dumped me off in the state that I was in, and I wasn't in any shape to make a big stink about it like I normally would have.  I have a friend that used to have this very job at metro but it was several years ago, and when he heard about this today he was aghast, jaw on the floor in shock. I may see if he can get involved and find out who it was if I don't hear back from someone in the department.

We had our holiday 'party' last night. Potluck as well. I bailed. It's really for the line people anyway.

Ignored would be a better term. Its not really a party just a bunch of people bringing in too much food to munch on all day. They don't do "parties" here..

In a six-person office where I once worked (as the only male employee), they had an annual Christmas gift exchange. Or at least they did the first year I was there. I'd suffered through those before, and the gifts generally ranged from thoughtless to tacky. The first year, I didn't know about it until it was announced so I kept my mouth shut and went along. The next year, well in advance, I registered sufficient dissatisfaction with the custom that they abandoned it. Nobody took issue with me over it, either. I think it was a long-standing tradition that most of the others never liked, but they were afraid to speak up in the presence of the Queen Bee who thought she ran things, and they seemed relieved that I did.

The department salaried Christmas party tradition ended after the year when the purchasing manager enjoyed the holiday punch a little too much and explained to the the department superintendent exactly how he was screwing up the business - rather loudly, with an audience.

Those were the good old days, especially if one stayed sober and observed. :-D

Holy crap on a stick UO is working for me this afternoon.  I'm sure now that I said that, it'll go down.

So we're on our way down to Charlotte for our holidays visit with my Dad.  Just stopped about 20 minutes north of Marietta at a McD's to get my kid a happy meal and, holy shite, that was the worst ugly convention I have ever attended.  Every single person in that place was upsetting to look at, both employees and customers.  And I'm not even in WVA yet!

Further along on the trip we come to Beckley WVA, where I thought long and hard about purchasing this flask I found at the gift shop.  It was on a key chain.....

I cannot believe you're driving.  that sounds painful!

Not that much of a difference door to door.... plus, none of the toll booth workers have insisted on touching my privates... or my wife's.

I have probably taken this drive more than 30 times over the past 15 years.  It ain't that bad

I cannot sit in an airplane that long, especially if you can't make it stop so you can stretch your legs.

Or roll down the window

Or shut up the screaming baby

My kia spectra has more leg room than the average plane seat. I would take the train tho. :)

Reminds me how here in Chicago, I rarely see obese people.  Seriously, I just never do.  So when I go to some random McD's in the middle of nowhere on a trip, it's extreme culture shock to me.

There's a snowstorm in Chicago

I love it when the snow is flying in Chicago, especially at night! The tall buildings and the snow swirling in the eddy currents make for dramatic winter scenes.

I just finished clearing my sidewalks, although by the time I finished, I could have started over again.

After my ancient, worn-out two-stage gas snow blower was stolen, I tried toughing it out for a couple of winters with a snow shovel. I have quite a lot of sidewalk plus a two-car driveway, so it's a major job after a heavy snow. Last winter I finally caved and went searching for an electric snow thrower. By then they were all sold out, and the manufacturers' sites said there would be no more until the next season.

I did my research; I really was set on trying an electric so that I wouldn't have to mess with storing gasoline or slopping around in it in freezing weather or checking and changing oil, and so I wouldn't have to fuss with an engine to get it started on bitter-cold days. After looking at specs and user reviews, I chose the Toro 1800 Power Curve and ordered it through Amazon.com. I've had it out three times, now, and have finally gotten the hang of using it and managing the cord, and I give it a two thumbs up. At first I thought it might not be much faster than an energetic fifteen-year-old with a shovel, but it required a minimum of effort. Now that I'm more familiar with it, I'd say it would give two fifteen-year-olds a run for it. It would be no match for a Minnesota roof-buster blizzard (what would?), but for the three- and four-inch accumulations of powdery snow that we usually get, it works just fine.

The only caveat I learned is that those blue cold-weather cords have a plastic coating instead of rubber, and if you step on one on a cement sidewalk with a thin skim of ice or snow, it's slicker'n snot on a doorknob. :-o

Hmm, should be showing up, although I've heard rumors flickr has not been working properly and images showing up for some people and not others.  There should be 4 images above.

Pshaw.  This was our surprise lake effect last Wednesday.  Can't even barely see across the d@mn street!

I'd just like to hear from the people today on here who are always saying that "the weather isn't that bad in Cleveland" or that people make a bigger deal out of it than it really is, and that snow is nice.  I just cannot fathom anyone thinking a day like today (or tomorrow, or possibly also Wednesday) is "not a big deal." Are you really for real?  The loathing I felt for driving in the weather today (still off work due to surgery, but had to take the baby to daycare) is the worst my feelings get for Cleveland, it's very hard to battle.

The snow honestly doesn't bother me.  Now the wind is a whole other story........  And then you put the two together, and yeah, it does kinda suck.

I dont think it's that bad.  Nor is it as bad as it was in MNPLS or the upper Great Lakes.

Do I like it?  HELL NO!!  But it's par for the course when you live in a four season locale.

I guess yeah, you have to consider the wind with the snow, as that's what's making the roads doubly bad today. And walking downtown with that blowing snow/wind, boy am I glad I wasn't working today.

I've known a few people in my life from extreme northern MN and ND.  Now that is what I consider to be terrible weather.  0 to -40 degrees on a regular basis?  No thanks.

True. My sister lives in WI and I always use her as a reality check, it's ALWAYS worse there than here. But that doesn't mean this is "fine."

Yeah, I walked to the bus.  That was awesome.  And if traffic is as bad tonight as it was Wednesday, I'm taking the rapid home, which will be an even longer walk.  But it beats sitting in traffic for 4 hours.

I had a nice leisurely drive today. Ate some candy canes, drank some coffee and listened to some music (Fiona Apple- Extraordinary Machine), it was kind of nice knowing that no matter what time I showed up nobody would care. Traffic was slow but constantly moving so I can't complain. Driving it the snow generally doesn't bother me and the roads were mostly clear.

I guess it comes down to if it bothers you or not? Is it sucky to take your dogs for a walk around the block in 40 mph winds and snow? Yes. Does it really bother me that much? No not really because I do like taking walks with them in the snow, when it's not blowing and enjoying the hushed quiet effect that the snow creates.

Now when it's March and it's 35 and gray, raining  all day for days on end that bothers me...

Still love the weather.  I love to go hiking in blizzards.  Something about being incapable of perceiving the world outside of the 40ft bubble of space around me is just serene.

I'm with CBC on this. First, today isn't by any stretch of the imagination the worst day I've ever driven. That said, it's not the ideal situation, but I'd take this over a mudslide, or a tornado / hurricane. How many of these days do we get in a winter?

Wind / cold / snow individually don't bother. All three together, well it tests my limits, but I'm hardy. I won't blow away.

Amazing. I wish I had your hardiness, if that's a word.

My one complaint  about the cold though is my car will not warm up just sitting there and idling. I went out and started it 15 minutes before I left this morning and the temp gauge was had not budged by the time I got in it to leave. It's a 4 cyl with a turbo so it's great on gas for a full sized car but I guess that it uses so little gas sitting there idling that it really won't get warm until I start driving. Even my old econo box 4-banger would have warmed up in 15 minutes.

Amen to that.  It's windy and 6 degrees in Milwaukee right now.  I can't feel my face after 1 minute of being outside.

I like having some snow each year (I miss the seasons in a milder climate), but not as much as the North Coast or upper New England.
