I'm almost affraid to ask this, but why are you looking at Adam's pinga?

about 5/3 bank: that is good news. I will explore this soon. I think the reason  people complain but don't leave banks even though the service is poor is b/c it is a total PITA. I am sure they count on this. I was venting my story to a small business owner that unhappily uses Key but it is basically is as hard to separate from your bank as get a divorce.

Think about it-- you have bills getting paid out of the account, direct deposit of paychecks and so on. Just to but an end to this we will have to have 2 accounts concurrently until we can phase out Key. We have spent far more hours of our time untangling their incompetence than it will take to open a new account. They are fine with routine things but anything out of the ordinary  have a couple of examples that there is no need to go into, they screw up. They took l responsibility on all occasions -but who cares, hours of our time wasted. "Sorry" only goes so far. I am not a malcontent. We never had banking problems before Key (these were banks out of Ohio).

I used to work at the Fifth Thizzle Bizzle, so I can add a little insight. As far as larger banks go, they're alright, although they do love the service fee, so just keep an eye out for that. The only real negative that I had noticed was on the technology side. When I was there the tellers were still hand writing tickets (time consuming, but didn't really effect me since I never go to tellers), and their website needed some updating. Specifically, while I can conduct online banking through my checking account (actually that interface is pretty good), I can't pay my HELOC or my credit card directly through their respective portals. For instance Amex will allow me to make a payment on their website, and they deduct it from my account, giving me instant credit for the payment (they say they don't, but they do). THis is helpful since I'm a procrastinator when it comes to bill paying. 5/3 didn't have that capability. I had to issue an ACH through my checking account which could (and did) take up to 5 days to credit.

That last point always PO'd me as well, since they receive the funds electronically, and it's the same organization, so they should have been able to clear the payment in 24 hours. They were just holding my money in limbo for 4 extra days for their own benefit.

But like MayDay says, every bank has its good and bad points. I'm at a smaller bank now and while the customer service is high, the tech is not as good.

Really? It's usually in and available by 12 AM for us.

You have to be aggressive with banks. They're a bunch of b@stards. The faster you act on a situation like an overdraft, the more likely they are to work with you. However, you really are just a number and they have no reason to care about alleviating your charges.

I wish I had a large portfolio at one of them; I'd threaten to have it managed by someone else every time they charge me a stupid bank fee. I think I paid a dollar each for sample checks not that long ago. What a ripoff.

I can understand me paying the consequences of an over draft, but these birds actually make mistakes and we waste a lot of time untangling them

Well when you have "x" amount of dollars in a bank, you don't get charged fees.  I think once you have over $9,999 in an account you're not charged fees?  I can't remember the last time I was charge a fee.

Fifith Third, what the crap is that!?!  I would never bank at a place that doesn't understand how the numbering system works.

But seriously Peabody, if you've had no other problems with Key, I wouldn't switch because of a Credit Card mishap.  Banks have ABSOLUTELY no control over issuing those cards.  I had HUGE problems with my UW Credit Union VISA card about a year ago and I seriously debated canceling my accounts, but I had a long chat with one of the tellers about how that works and they convinced me to stay.  I'm glad I did because they've been a great Credit Union.

But everything looks all rose colored and hapy compared to TCF (my previous bank.)

NEVER GET AN ACCOUNT AT TCF BANK!!!!  EVER!!!

They steal money regularly with their "service fees" that show up on statements at random times.  Every time I went to a TCF to ask about these "service fees" they always said the same thing.  "Whoops, I'm sorry about that.  Let me put that money back in your account for you."  This happened regularly...about 8 times over a year and it was always about $30.  Nothing too noticeable.  I brought this up in a work meeting once and of the 12 people in the room, 5 people had experienced the same thing and had also switched to a different bank.  Oh yeah, and then after all that, they had to balls to charge me $80 to cancel my account.

Have fun on your trip.  I wouldn't worry too much about your money getting stolen.  Just make sure you keep money separated  stick a wad in the bottom of your suitcase, and another in your shoe.  If you really get in a bind, you can always have someone wire you some money at an embassy.  I know how worried you are about political imprisonment, but I can't help you there.  I don't think you'd be able to buy yourself out anyway.  In that situation I'd suggest bringing a small pick-axe so you could chisel your way out like that guy in "The Shawshank Redemption."

Safe travels!!

Hi all,

Enjoy.

If only this were Key banks only transgression, then we would let it go. Even though getting euro  travels checks just cost me $30 in a poor exchange rate. We don't get nickel and dimed with fees at Key, but a series of events and poor support over the years have just drained us. I guess what I think of as a good customer: never bounce checks, keep a nice saving account, no credit cards (atm Master) really is a bad customer in their mind b/c they can't jack me with interest and fees.

As far as travel, We are experts at securing money. we wear money belts  http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/tips/moneybelt.htm     (this is not a fanny pack), and spread money and credit cards over our person. Unlike the US where the theives are lazy and unskilled-they just pull a gun, strict gun control in Europe means they have to be slick. which means you find grubby hands in your pockets on busses and such.   Not as fun as it sounds.

No, I mean the other way around. When I would issue an ACH to pay my 5/3 CC from my 5/3 checking account, the money would be deducted that day, but the credit didn't show up on my card account until 5 days later. I'm not speaking to when deposits were credited to my account. Unless there was a check hold, they were usually in there the next day.

Once I knew the game, I managed the process, but it still was a minor annoyance.

I think those money belts are ridiculous.  I do understand your concern as this guy one tried to steal my mothers purse in room.  He actual stuck a cane under his chair and over to our table and tried to pry open my mothers purse.  unfortunate for him, he was grabbing my fathers bag.  He got an a$$whippin' he won't soon forget.

I agree with peabody, european theives are fierce!  They are really good!

of all the places I have gone, I have never been victimized (only in my hometowns. no, not Cleve. either). But then I try to be sensible. I am never paranoid though.  We get the worst jet lag which makes us a lot dumber than usual so we have to take extra precautions. Money belts are foolproof. I watched a little kid put his hands in my husbands pockets in the  DR..so fast and light fingered he really didn't even notice. Luckily we had the money belt! geeks I know. But geeks who still have money the end of the day.

DR, Pamana, Argentia, Columbia, Mexico, Italy, Monaco, and Brazil are filled with young theivesl!  I don't blame you for being cautious especially if you don't speak the language fluently.

Sorry, I haven't read this in a while, and I am just here to get my hundredth post.

Whooohooo, I'm a bank!

^Yayyy!

Whooohooo, I'm a bank!

Peabody, we've found a new bank for you!  I don't know what there customer service is like or if they offer credit cards, but it's a bank

so I just send all my money?

If you want to be nice, you can just drop it off on Shaker Square and I'll deposit it!

Wooly Mammoths will rule once again. Be prepared.

Never had that specific problem; but I will have to agree that TCF is not a good bank.  Thank goodness my primary bank is with a (superb) Ohio credit union.

FRIGGIN' RICH BRAGGIN BASTARD!!

Since I have -$18,000, I should have my fees waived too.

Banks love to exploit the poor. I overdrafted when I had to get my car towed one time; I had no other choice. Then suddenly 10-12 really small transactions went through for coffee and such. 35 bucks made per transaction on "loans" of 1-2 dollars. They wouldn't reduce the fees at all. F*ck You very much USBANK.

I wasn't braggin, I was just stating what I thought was a common banking practice.

^IIRC, National City has one for just maintaining a average daily balance of 5k or something. Ask your bank, there's a lot of things banks can do for you.

To add on to that, If you have direct deposit via your job, they usually wave certain fees. As pope suggests, check with your bank.

Come November, I will have been using the same credit union for 50 years. Their services were pretty minimal back when I started, but they're as full-service now as any bank in town, and a lot friendlier and more eager to provide prompt, courteous service. I can't remember the last time I paid a fee for anything, and their interest rates are competitive.

Doesn anyone know anything about "the national safe and lock company"?

Yes. They keep a front door key in the planter by the garage. Don't tell anyone.

leave it to KOOW.  I need to know, if anyone has any information.  I need to get some information to a producer.

I've put them down. That's why I'm not $20,000 or deeper in the hole. I'll have an opportunity starting this weekend to step back from the edge. Keep your fingers and toes crossed for me.

Does anyone watch The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson?

I think he is hilarious.

I think he's an idiot.

I think he's an idiot.

well anything is better than Craig Kilborn. I feel like that whole show revolved around him getting attractive women on, and then hitting on them for the entire interview. Not in the awkward Conan O'Brien way, but kinda like Kilborn's character in Old School.

Oh lawd.

Also, what is with the Dancing with the Stars show?  I can't get into that show!  It's such a bore.  However, I LOVE intervention on A&E.

Smallville is an excellent show, you should all watch it!

Arrested Development was nothing short of brilliant, and the way they handled the ending of the series nothing less than tragic.

And that's all I've got to say about that.

and on an aside, am I the only person that saw "Forrest Gump" as a complete rip-off of "Being There"?

Am I the only person that thinks that Forrest Gump shouldn't have won any awards? Its a nice happy non-sequiter story that will keep you amused for 2 hours, but aside from that?

^ what more can you ask for!  I guess the acting was good.

Forrest Gump was great. I love Robert Zemeckis films.

Forrest Gump was great.

It was no "Rudy".
