October 3, 201212 yr david blaine is ready to do his thing again friday. i can see the setup from the roofdeck of my bar so i took a couple snaps - info below: US Magician David Blaine performs a small preview of his upcoming performance 'Electrified.' Magician David Blaine climbed atop a wobbling platform above a high-voltage Tesla coil in a tent on a Manhattan pier on Tuesday, dressed in a 20-pound chain-mail suit, and proceeded to shoot purplish arcs of lightning out of his hands and the top of his head. The event - an unusual sort of press conference at which journalists were asked to stop their ears with foam plugs - was a preview of a stunt he will undertake starting on Friday, when he plans to stand on a 20-foot-high platform for 72 hours without food amid an artificial lightning storm crackling between low-current, million-volt Tesla coils. "I had wanted to do this for years," he said. The magician's past endurance stunts include sitting in a box suspended above the River Thames in London for 44 days with only water, and standing unharnessed on a 100-foot-high pillar in New York City for 35 hours. He described how this latest idea grew out of an image he had of himself at the center of a giant plasma globe. Realizing the idea would require him to exist in an airless vacuum - a feat beyond even Blaine's prowess - he adapted the idea to instead use Tesla coils. "Being in the middle of a lightning storm, it feels so amazing, being in an environment you shouldn't be in," he said. Blaine's stainless steel chain-mail suit is a so-called Faraday suit, an adaptation of the principle of the Faraday cage in which an enclosure of highly conductive material shields whatever is within the enclosure from an electric field. It is a version of the sort of protective suit some linemen wear when working on high-voltage power lines or hobbyists make for themselves when playing with homemade Tesla coils. 72 HOURS OF STANDING Stuart Weiss, Blaine's doctor, said the main risks of the stunt include exposure to the ozone and nitrous oxides that are a byproduct of ionized air, which humans should not inhale in large quantities. A ventilation system will ensure Blaine has breathable air and a special visor in his helmet will protect his eyes from the ultraviolet radiation of the arcing electricity. Because Tesla coils are noisy, he will wear noise-cancelling earphones that will also allow him to hear and communicate with people on the ground, including members of the public. He will suck water through a tube, urinate through a catheter, and has been fasting to avoid the need to defecate. Intel Corporation is sponsoring the event to promote notebook computers that use its processor technology. Blaine said he hoped to inspire children to learn about physics - for example, it is not the volts, even a million of them, that can kill, but the amps. The electric current, measured in amps, produced by a typical Tesla coil is low. William Allen Zajc, chairman of the physics department at Columbia University, applauded the magician for making physics seem exciting. He said the stunt was basically safe, though could prove risky if the suit deteriorated from the exposure. "To me, the amazing thing is that he plans to stand there for 72 hours, not that there's a million volts or these impressive lightning bolts passing through the Faraday cage that surrounds him," Zajc said. http://www.metro.us/newyork/local/article/1153360--photos-magician-david-blaine-readies-for-million-volt-stunt-at-new-york-s-pier-54
October 4, 201212 yr Since this is a website for urban planning professionals, I felt a duty to inform anyone in the field that the position of Painesville City Manager is open (no one is really quite sure why the current one, Rita McMahon, is leaving after 15 years :? ). To get the details, scroll through the BS in the PDF down the the last page (7). Hey, it’s not so bad, the pay is pretty good, especially for a town the size of P’ville (although I don’t know what similar cities in Ohio pay), and you’re close enough to Cleveland if you want to escape and visit the “big city.”: http://painesvilleoh.govoffice2.com/vertical/Sites/%7B66FDE066-2B9A-43E2-8DFC-2129003D50A7%7D/uploads/City_Manager_Recruitment_Information_2012A.pdf http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

October 13, 201212 yr q & a: william friedman, president & ceo cleveland-cuyahoga county port authority Douglas Trattner | Thursday, October 11, 2012 The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority is asking voters to vote "Yes" on Issue 108, a levy that would generate approximately $90 million over five years and cost property owners roughly $20 annually per $100,000 of assessed value. **** And how will those improvements spur future river- and lake-front development. Economists will tell you that for every dollar spent on public infrastructure, there is an investment multiplier. More specifically, if we can open up Franklin Hill, which is 30 acres, we can turn an eyesore into an amenity. If we can create a trail system which would allow you to go from the West Side Market to Wendy Park. If we can connect the mall complex down to the lakefront. I think there’s a straight line from these sorts of investments to decision-making on the part of people in terms of where do I want to locate my company and where do I want to live personally. here's the rest: http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/features/willfriedman101112.aspx Was William Friedman of the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority separated at birth from.... Aerial mapping was the mission of a low-flying, World War II-era plane whose back-and-forth flight led curious onlookers to call police Monday. A police dispatcher in Lorain, who said he didn’t know the plane’s mission, said he and fellow dispatchers had received calls about the plane. October 14, 201212 yr Does anyone know what is up with my computer? I am running on a Macbook OS X 10.5.8 and using Google Chrome version 21. All of a sudden my browser started saying that it will never update again because my Macbook is too old. Then it started saying that my flash player needed to be updated. Apparently Flash is a plugin for Chrome and not a separate program and that flash will automatically update. I'm not too concerned about Chrome not updating because my computer is 4.5 years old and I will be getting a new one next summer. But when things like this happen I can't use my computer. Help!
October 17, 201212 yr Why is there a World War II bomber circling around downtown Cleveland? EDIT: it's been circling for about the past hour! It's Iran! That's funny ...but did you know Iran has unmanned Predator Drones now? I guess when one of yours crashes into the desert it doesn't take long for the country it lands in to reverse engineer the technology. I think it's only capable of going like a thousand miles but imagine one day if they're flying around the U.S. on a reconaissance mission. That would be weird. http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/09/iran-shows-off-long-range-armed-predator-lookalike-drone/
October 17, 201212 yr ^From a technical point of view, building a demonstration drone isn't really that big of a step up from building a remote control plane. Stepping up to building something that works as well (or close to as well) as a Predator drone is much more significant. There are a lot of unanswered questions on the capability of such an aircraft to accurately use its weapons, to provide accurate geographical information, to hide using stealth technology or to communicate in situations where signal jamming is employed.

He was sentenced to six months of probation last year after police received a report of a man dressed as Batman on the roof of a Petoskey business.

October 19, 201212 yr Just ran into Valerie Bertinelli on Euclid Ave. She's still hot and actually in Cleveland, but surprisingly short.
October 19, 201212 yr Yea she's still hot. If Eddie would have just put the bottle down he'd still have her... well maybe he'd have to also cut back on the unpredictable behavior such as trying to smash a window out of an airplane.
October 19, 201212 yr I hate when you propose an idea - "they should do this, or they should do that" and someone goes, "It would be a logistical nightmare." "It would be a logistical nightmare" is the most vague blanket statement I've ever heard. Exactly what entails this logistical nightmare?
October 19, 201212 yr Heads up: "14-0" next to UDF on Hudson at Indianola (Columbus) has Sierra Nevada for 7.99 for a 12 pack. At least it was a few days ago but they still have it in stock where they put the sale items, I noticed this morning. Isn't that like less than half price? Is that even legal for it to be that cheap? I'm thinking about stocking up later. I don't normally buy the high grade stuff but at that price...
October 20, 201212 yr Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I know it's a random subject change but I figured since there's a lot of Columbusites on this forum, they might appreciate that information :) I told the guy at the counter, I used to work at a restaurant (Via Vite and Indigo) and we were hustling Blue Moon, Sierra Nevada, Stella Artois and the like, for 4-5 bucks a single bottle. Just tripped me out seeing it that cheap. I don't know if all the 14-0 convenience stores have that promotion; it seems like 14-0 is like a franchise or something because they all have different names, (Sammy's 14-0, etc.) just like how you'll have Keller's IGA, Cook's IGA, etc. They said they're running that sale until they run all out and there was plenty left! They were definitely 12 packs. The sign said marked down from like 17.99 or something like that. It has to be some useful information to someone on this site lol. I've never seen a markdown on beer like that.
October 22, 201212 yr Wasn't there a thread (maybe by Sherman?) wherein he infultrated the church in the Sedamsville neighborhood of Cincinnati and took pictures? My sister said they did an episode on that church on the show "Ghost Hunters" or "Ghost Adventures." I remember sneaking in there with friends when I was a younger. That place is really creepy. It was stuck in time with the old pews and other furniture/fixtures but I remember the floor seeming like it was on the verge of collapse. It's such a dangerous building I'm surprised they even went in there. I lived one St. up from that church on Delhi Pike for a bit, when I was a kid. Edit: Oh wow, here we go:

I'm not too concerned about Chrome not updating because my computer is 4.5 years old and I will be getting a new one next summer. But when things like this happen I can't use my computer. Help! I had something similar happen. I was running Little Snitch to prevent the unsavory site from gathering information. The software did it's job beautifully until at some point I accidentally allowed it to block mac and chrome updates. My computer was stuck in 2010. Eventually I got messages saying things were no longer supported because I failed to update the OS and web browsers...and finally MacOS just stopped booting up. I duplicated the hard drive onto an external under the bootup disk management and then updated to Mountain Line. I was so incredibly behind. My computer which is well over 3 years old seems faster than the day I bought it. I guess the lesson learned here is update often. You don't have a virus...it's just you missed a hell of a ton of updates. While your at it, run a hardware diagnostic to make sure everything is working okay, but that has nothing to do with the problem your experiencing.
October 27, 201212 yr I hardly think a dishwasher and central air are outrageous requests. Not everyone wants the Northside grunge lifestyle, Quimbob. I have no dog in this show, but I agree. Princess?? :o How dare you insult me by calling me a lowly "princess" I am an EMPRESS REGENT you insignificant human being!
October 27, 201212 yr Yeah, besides, he's too OLD to be a princess. He's more akin to that 200 year old queen of England that hasn't died yet for some reason.
October 28, 201212 yr two very cool things! i saw the first one in the paper - its lincoln colorized. a 22yr old is an expert in this. she said it took an hour in photoshop to do it. not sure how she could ever get the tones right, either is based off the gray scale or thats just the art of it i dk, but it certainly does bring him to life: http://m.nypost.com/p/news/national/classic_lincoln_gets_paint_job_SktryNU3TdBF7cnNEzGXGM the second is a new photo i saw on apod from hubble of the deepest view ever (in visible light) of space. its a beautiful long exposure called extreme deep field: http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap121014.html

November 1, 201212 yr Today has been a very, very, very long day! I haven't worked this hard in years! I had to take a bus to the office, it took me almost 2 hours to go 57 blocks. I couldn't ride the bus everyday. next, only a few people on my NY staff can get to work, plus we had to cover the divisions. Nightmare! I had to do things I haven't done in decades. I really appreciate my LA staff for picking up the slack for the East Coast offices over the past three days. It so strange to look out of the office windows and see and dark lower Manhattan. The bus ride back to Harlem was just as bad. I'm so glad the subway will be back tomorrow, even in a limited capacity.
November 1, 201212 yr I think I'm going to commute more often on my longboard to work. There's been a ton of bicycle deaths in Chicago lately. I just feel a bit paranoid And that's even as we add more protected bike lanes. In the past couple months - 1 Killed by a motorist opening their door into a bike lane, Cyclist swerved to avoid and crushed by semi truck - 1 Killed by drunk unlicensed and uninsured driver. - 1 Killed by a truck making a right turn.
November 1, 201212 yr Former Flint Mayor Don Williamson erects statue of himself outside new Davison Township home "I think it's funny," said Amy Duncan. "It's ridiculous." After the statues were put up her husband Ryan Duncan said they wondered what other work Williamson would do at the property. "I said, 'What's he doing, building a moat?'" Ryan Duncan joked. "It's a joke. Someone is going to do something to that statue." Williamson resigned as mayor in 2009 just before he was about to be recalled. Less than two years after the recall, Williamson and his wife moved out of their longtime home in Flint on Parkside Drive.

November 6, 201212 yr Woman who drove on sidewalk must wear "idiot" sign CLEVELAND (AP) -- A woman caught on camera driving on a sidewalk to avoid a Cleveland school bus that was unloading children will have to stand at an intersection wearing a sign warning about idiots. Court records show a Cleveland Municipal Court judge on Monday ordered 32-year-old Shena Hardin to stand at an intersection for two days next week. She will have to wear a sign saying: "Only an idiot drives on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus."
November 6, 201212 yr That woman's sentence is a joke and I'm not even talking about the sign. 30days license supension and $250 is completely unacceptable.

November 7, 201212 yr That woman's sentence is a joke and I'm not even talking about the sign. 30days license supension and $250 is completely unacceptable. a $250 fine? I'd imagine she'll have to pay a license reinstatement fee as well, once that fine is paid off. That coupled with the cruel and unusual punishment --it sounds like a decent judgement to me. What, did you want her to be burned at the stake?
November 7, 201212 yr I'd expect a 3 month suspension at the minimum. I'm sure she got some stuff reduced for accepting the humiliation sentence. It's gross misjudgment repeated multiple times over. That's a pretty shiny new SUV so 250 bucks doesn't seem like enough either, but it's probably her idiot mother's car.
