Last weekend I drove to Ft. Wayne and bought an '06 Ford Escape Hybrid. I love it!

So you went from a Nissan to a Ford.... tsk tsk tsk...

Just kidding.. Those Escape hybrids are awesome.

I still love my little nissan altima though. :-)

You should give it up like I did. It does wonders for your budget. I can go to Jimmy Johns and order something other than day-old bread now.

The popularity of Rage Against the Machine amongst the younger generation never ceases to amaze. It's like, I auditioned for a Rage cover band back in 1995 (only because the guys seemed to know a lot of girls) and this junk keeps festering.

Fort Wayne, huh? Do you remember a local radio talk show host named Paul Phillips, who was on WOWO and another station? He left for Chicago sometime in the mid 90s.

Yeah, yeah, I know ... lol

I was going to, but I knew we didn't have much time and it was a rainy-chilly day. I will say this, that was the first time I ever stepped foot in Ft. Wayne and I was pleasantly surprised! I was thinking it was going to be a "Lima" type of town, but it was larger than I thought! One of the neighborhoods we drove through reminded me of a Hyde Park/Norwood mixture. It was nice and immediately was near Downtown?

If it was adjacent to downtown, it was likely either Lakeside on the East, or West Central on the West. There are some very nice old city neighborhoods.

I used to listen to WOWO back in the fifties and sixties. In my earliest memories it was a Westinghouse affiliate, and for most of the time I listened to it, it was local content; Fort Wayne Komet Hockey, local high-school sports, farm programming, local bands at dance halls at the lakes on Saturday nights ...

I can't remember when it happened, but through a change of ownership, or probably a series of changes, it started carrying mostly syndicated programming and then morphed into a right-wing talk station, of which Fort Wayne already had too many. After a long abstinence from WOWO, I turned it on one Sunday morning to hear a preacher from some church in Colorado railing about "The Death Penalty for Homosexuals as Prescribed in the Bible!"

That was at least 15 year ago, and that was the last time I listened to WOWO.

That was undoubtedly a brokered show. The church was buying the air time. It's sort of a psycho-political version of an infomercial. This show sounds like Westboro Baptist church, the people who are now demonstrating at military funerals. They're about as popular on FR and other conservative sites as the RCP.

It was Paul (the host at WOWO and another station I disremember) who filled me in on the bottom feeder status of brokered radio. That's why he was so highly amused when Air America turned out to be exactly that. They lost one of their "affiliates" for not paying their bills right before a big radio convention in Vegas. It was the talk of same.

Paul was a "right wing" host but he picked on the looney right as well. I found out he was on WOWO before he knew I knew, I called him not saying who I was until I dropped a personal-historical reference at the end of a 15 to 20 minute call. Resulting in 30 seconds of dead air with 50,000 watts behind it. (I owed him one)

The program was Scripture for Americans. I can't remember the preacher's name, but I used to see it regularly in the SPLC's publications. He was pretty much a pillar of the Christian Identity movement that was aligned with various extreme right-wing groups and individuals and generally promoted violence. I remember that the preacher's name came up as one of the people Tim McVeigh visited shortly before he blew up the Murrah Federal Building.

During his broadcast he was plainly advocating violence to the point of murder against gays, even while saying that he wasn't ("I'm not telling you to do this, I'm just telling you what the Bible says.") I tried to call the station's program manager several times, never reached him, and never got my calls returned. Finally, I told the receptionist that if I didn't hear back within 24 hours, I was taking my complaint to the FCC. License renewals were coming up, and I got a call back in about 15 minutes. The program manager admitted that he had never listened to the broadcast that aired early on Sunday mornings, but claimed it had a strong following among the station's regular listeners. A short time later, that program was no longer on WOWO. The last I knew, it was broadcasting from a short-wave station in Ecuador or someplace. It may be defunct now; I just tried Googling "Scripture for Americans" and didn't get anything.

Okay, then it's worse than Phelps. "Christian Identity" wouldn't just kill gays, it would kill "adulterers" and even kids who don't heed their parents. They're just plain nuts.

If Paul was on when these guys were he would probably have had a lot of fun at their expense too. He was definitely a conservative, but he used to mock on the "Freemen" and other nutbars a lot.

Of course this was a guy who during a asbestos scare at Shaker High maneuvered his way in front of a TV camera then coughed through a handful of talcum powder. We're definitely talking about someone who targetted those who take themselves too seriously.

Incredible Story

In 1986, Peter Davies was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University .

On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Peter approached it very carefully.

He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant's foot and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Peter worked the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Peter stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away. Peter never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.

Twenty years later, Peter was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenaged son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Peter and his son Cameron were standing. The large bull elephant stared at Peter, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.

Remembering the encounter in 1986, Peter couldn't help wondering if this was the same elephant. Peter summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Peter legs and slammed his stupid ass against the railing, killing him instantly.

Probably wasn't the same elephant.

It took a while to retrieve this one from the mental archives, but it surfaced early this morning in that hazy state between sleep and wakefulness.

The preacher was Pastor Pete Peters. Google him and you'll find that he was one of the more dangerous among the far right because of his no-holds-barred extremism and his ability to use broadcast media to appeal to the nutjobs who feel a need to take revenge on society.

I've hit a new high -- or low, depending on how you look at it.

In the past 24 hours I've gotten 72 spam emails offering male enhancement pharmaceuticals. I'm beginning to wonder who's been spreading malicious rumors!

Funny thing is, almost half of them are in German. Maybe they have me mixed up with some overcompensating Neo-Nazi. :?

I enjoy forwarding my spam to various individuals that I dislike.

What do you guys think about having a "Dumb Joke/Funny Stories" fusion thread? It would make the "Dumb Joke" thread more vibrant and I'm sure a lot of people would contribute as events unfold in their life. Seems really appropriate for urbanbar.

Question for the few females on the forum:

If you mention to a girl that you almost had sex with a girl at a party that was pressuring you to but you saw her snort two Perc. 10s and refrained from it, and the girl you told this to says "a lot of girls need to get laid", is she implying that she does? This would be valuable information.

^Don't do it.

I did not and will never have sex with the pill snorter, I'm just curious about how to interpret this other girl. I think you read that wrong.

Well I'd guess she's still goofing around herself which is the problem with college girls. Wait till she turns 26 and the tables turn.

i had to read this a couple times to decipher your question, seeing as how it's in guy-speak :). i guess my question is in this: is she implying that she does . which "she" are you referring to? do you want to know if the second girl is saying that (the second girl) just needs to get laid; therefore, she understands the first girl's snorting activity? meaning, basically, that you're interested in the second girl and you're wondering if the second girl is interested in you?

actually, either way, sure we need to get laid, too, sometimes. however, i can say with 100% accuracy that i have never, nor will i ever, resort to snorting as a means to attempt to get laid. the second girl's response makes me question her own judgment. is that all she said though? what happened after that? if you want us to break this down for you we need all the information we can get :)

what does this mean?? that they have to drugs themselves to do you (or some other guy). I am confused. Back in my generation, I believe it was the man trying to drug the women, not someone drugging themselves. You guys have it too easy these days.

"back in your generation" lawd!

Honey, people from the good old party days - are generation - are still trying to "date drug" women/women, to get laid.

I agree, these whipper snappers do have it easy and thats because non of them, male or female, have any damn self respect!!
