November 19, 201410 yr They're playing the "numbers game". Remember it does work between 1-5 percent of the time. If it didn't work at all then the practice would disappear within 10 years I'm sure. The other problem is once people get out of school and start working non-office jobs they find out how gender-segregated the work world is. I haven't worked with a woman since 2006, except for a very short seasonal period when one guy's wife worked with us. So a daily life of all-sausage or all-taco can get very, very old. And blue-collar men are sometimes marginalized in this society -- which increases their need to become very outgoing when it comes to the opposite sex. I'd like to hire women here at the store but we've receive 20 resumes from men for each one from a woman that's not another employee's girlfriend (wary of them not focusing on work when I'm not there). And a lot of the resumes from women don't meet the basic requirements (over 18, prior retail experience). If we didn't have to buy most of our stock from the public we could ease some of these requirements.
November 19, 201410 yr I could barely see anything with my peripheral vision and was not inclined to turn my head and look directly at him, but the car held two black youths who couldn't have been more than 20. I don't see that as blue collar workers tired of the all sausage workplace. I understand what you're saying but I have been razzed much less often by groups upon groups of construction workers I've walked past who were sitting and eating their lunch (they might look, but they don't often comment, contrary to stereotype) than I have by young black men in cleveland. I specifically added the "in cleveland" to that sentence as it doesn't seem to happen to me like this in other urban areas. In NYC I almost never get comment and when I have, it's been by Latino guys. In Los Angeles nobody came up to me on the street except homeless people. Same thing in Cincy and Chicago. I wonder if it has something to do with continued seeds of racism on both sides of the table that lingers here in Cleveland, and maybe they're doing it to be hostile since I am white? I don't know, I really don't.
November 19, 201410 yr I have only been to Cleveland about 5 times and am a white guy so I can't help with that one.
November 19, 201410 yr I was more musing than looking for actual answers I guess. I know we have a big racial divide here in Cleveland still, it makes me sad.
November 19, 201410 yr Re: New York, I always keep hearing about how many single women there are in proportion to single men. Perhaps they men in New York don't have to be so outgoing to meet women. And the women in LA have a reputation for being outgoing themselves so the men probably don't feel so lonely.
November 19, 201410 yr I was more musing than looking for actual answers I guess. I know we have a big racial divide here in Cleveland still, it makes me sad. It's not racial, really. It's cultural. You don't see middle aged black men doing it, or full time college students.
November 19, 201410 yr Not true. Black males of every age, including and up to elderly, regularly verbally harass me when I am downtown.
November 19, 201410 yr ^^Yes, poverty also affects the activity. I remember the kids over at the trailer park were always the most outgoing kids at school.
November 19, 201410 yr Some people are just magnets for things they don't like for whatever reason. I know plenty of very attractive girls in their youth who don't get constantly harassed like you, RnR. Not saying they don't get cat-called on occasion. But it certainly is nowhere remotely close to the same extent you experience in your 40s on a daily basis. I don't know anybody that has it as bad as you, and ever since that Jezebel video came out and we had that discussion I have been asking a lot just to confirm I am not crazy. Maybe you have whatever the black man's equivolent of 'the shiska appeal' would be? As for any notions of racial hostility, that has nothing to do with it. Trust me on that one. I don't think that is a responsible comment to make either as it will only further whatever racial divide you perceive there to be.
November 19, 201410 yr I'm sorry. I truly don't mean it to be divisive. I really, really don't. But it's how things have gone so I wanted to mention it. If it matters at all, it's been like this ever since I moved to cleveland, not just in my 40s. But it didn't happen in college. It certainly think there are gobs and gobs of way more attractive women out there than me, and if you'd seen me today bundled up head to toe, you can't even begin to argue that it has anything to do with looks in any fashion. I know from a lot of conversations online that I'm definitely not alone in receiving comments like these and that it doesn't matter what you're wearing or how attractive you are. I think there perhaps are certain physical or social settings that encourage it. I would like to figure out what those are and dismantle them. Also, I like the idea of the shiksa appeal, that's kind of funny. I've had a disproportionate number of Jewish boyfriends and one of my Jewish friends says it's because I have a particular type of appeal for Jewish men, my look and my attitude. Of course, again, you can't really determine those by me walking down the street in a winter coat and ear flap hat, so I don't think that's it here, but it's funny anyway.

I don't think that is a responsible comment to make either as it will only further whatever racial divide you perceive there to be. Aw come on, do I have to make all the “divisive” comments here? Seriously, is a comment on a medium-profile forum where most of us know where the others are coming from going to exacerbate a racial divide? I think not. The beauty of a place like this is we can be blunt without it being incendiary. R&R is saying something that I flat out guarantee many other younger white women are thinking. For every one willing to come out and say it, how many (thousand) simply minimize their exposure to it? One quite easy way to do that is to shop in places like Crocker Park or other high end suburban stores. Is that what you all want? We also saw this with the casino skywalk discussions, particularly among the “feet on the streets” segment of the opponents. It seems some here (and likely in the urbanist community in general) blow off the concerns of women in a dense urban environment, particularly younger affluent ones. In my opinion, if you want a busy and active downtown, that’s a serious mistake.
November 21, 201410 yr Obviously this is an extreme example, but related to the topic we've been discussing. Men who think catcalling is harmless don't know that women feel like this is what's going to happen to them while they are being bothered or if they tell the person to knock it off. http://jezebel.com/and-this-is-why-more-men-men-who-are-pissed-off-at-str-1661480851?utm_campaign=socialflow_jezebel_facebook&utm_source=jezebel_facebook&utm_medium=socialflow

Aiming it at a woman who is with a guy is a different animal entirely. The harmless, bantery guys will leave an accompanied woman alone, leaving the ones who are primarily looking for a fight. It’s much like a woman being chatted up in a bar, casually mentioning a boyfriend will back off the decent guys leaving the d-bags. Quite honestly, if I am carrying and some random guy on the street tries chatting up a woman I am with, I have one hand drifting towards Smith, Wesson, and their 15 little friends. This may sound extreme, and I’m not about to pull on someone just for what their mouth does. It’s about what a guy with that kind of nerve is up to.

That's no excuse, but certainly not the norm.

I missed that detail. Just commented from personal experiences in the Tenderloin which were similarly macro-aggressive.
November 21, 201410 yr A lot of younger white women are thinking that the cat calls they receive are due to racial hostility? Really? Go ahead and run with that if it makes you feel vindicated for your own personal beliefs, but I find that very hard to believe. Even harder to believe, as a matter of fact I know it not to be true, is that the cat calls are indeed due to racial hostility. Ridiculous. Black women get cat called at least twice as much. I can only assume the idea of racial hostility is the result of a lingering societal belief that minority men shouldn't be asking "where the white women at" and should stick to "their own kind." There..... That's me being blunt So my post is not misinterpreted (again) let me be perfectly clear that cat calling is distasteful and it does indeed happen. So in response to those who do it, let me just say arrrgggghhhhh!!!! And when I say 'those who do it' there is no limitation based on physical characteristics such as skin, hair, or eye color
November 21, 201410 yr Black women get cat called at least twice as much. I actually think this is a very important point. I would say that the vast majority of the catcalling I see is directed towards black women, but the voices we're hearing seem to be mostly white. I'm sure they have an opinion on the matter, but it isn't really being given much exposure.
November 21, 201410 yr That would fit in line with the way we marginalize minorities in the media. Having spoken to many women of different backgrounds on this matter I've found that women of racial minorities have a very different attitude of, "what can we do about it?" because society hasn't really ever considered giving their opinion the proper voice it deserves. But the moment white women felt violated we have videos popping up, people going crazy, etc. It's a problem that extends well beyond this topic and is pretty sad. I can guarantee no woman (or anyone really since catcalling isn't actually something that just happens to women) enjoys being catcalled.
November 21, 201410 yr As we established earlier, it mostly comes down to the source of the cat calling. I've never seen a woman being receptive to a cat call from the fry guy at McDonalds. guy in a Lamborghini presents a different scenario
November 23, 201410 yr I got cat-called by a couple of girls in the cafeteria at my college once -- 25 years ago. I thanked them for the lovely tune and then presented them with a one-point questionnaire: "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
November 24, 201410 yr It turns out that the video was edited to exclude most of the white men who hollered at Roberts that day. The video's producer, Rob Bliss, wrote an explanation on reddit: "We got a fair amount of white guys, but for whatever reason, a lot of what they said was in passing, or off camera." For whatever reason they were edited from the video, that omission is powerful. Additionally, black and brown women were excluded, as if we do not exist, or are not affected by street harassment when, in fact, we are more endangered by it.* * * After much criticism, Hollaback apologized for its overrepresentation of men of color, and stated that the money raised from the video would be put towards creating videos that were more inclusive: "We agree wholeheartedly that the video should have done a better job of representing our understanding of street harassment and we take full responsibility for that." http://jezebel.com/a-hollaback-response-video-women-of-color-on-street-ha-1655494647
November 24, 201410 yr So basically what I'm getting is this. "We created a video that claimed to be one thing but is a significantly edited version of reality." Having many female friends I'm completely aware of the fact that they are often harassed while on the street. But that specific video's message is pretty worthless when it comes out that they edited as they saw fit to get the message they wanted to get across. That's basically the "reality TV" treatment where they can turn normal people into monsters through the wonders of editing.
November 24, 201410 yr ^I'm accepting apologies over PM for getting attacked for saying basically the same thing the day this conversation started on here ;)

November 26, 201410 yr I remember my mom would pour it over toast with sliced hard boiled eggs when I was kid. Obviously it was a hit in our house. I think she used in Tuna Casserole too. Wow, why did I ever think she was a good cook?
November 26, 201410 yr What else would you use it for? Sear 2lbs of chicken breasts. Mix cream of mushroom soup with dry white wine, chicken stock, diced garlic, salt, black pepper, curry powder. Cook over medium heat to a low boil. Add browned chicken breasts to saucepan. Reduce heat to low and cook for another 30 minutes covered.
November 26, 201410 yr CBC, the tuna or eggs on toast thing is actually a very old fashioned meal and was popular in the 50s. My Mom made it using a white sauce she would make. it was cheap way to feed a family and really wasn't half bad.
November 27, 201410 yr Here's a good use for the inevitable leftover turkey. Chop it up and mix it into large bowl with cream cheese, diced onions, diced carrots and peas. Add poultry and other seasoning. Take two uncooked crescent roll triangles and mush the long ends together to make a square. Take a serving spoonful out of the bowl and place it in the middle of the square and then close it by pulling up the four corners and mushing them and the edges together. It will end up looking like a large square shaped hot pocket. Add sesame or poppy or whatever seeds to the top. Repeat as necessary until you're out of the filling. Cook at 375 for about 20 to 30 minutes. They are great out of the oven and can also be wrapped up refrigerated and then hate cold
