July 28, 20159 yr Starting February 27, 2016, the 614 area code serving Central Ohio area code will be overlaid by area code 380. Starting January 30, 2016, you will have to dial the full 10-digit phone number, including area code, in this region. Fun fact: When the 513 area code runs out of numbers, it will be overlaid by area code 283. However, this is not expected to happen until around 2018.

August 4, 20159 yr A few months ago, I had my credit card number stolen while I was out of town for business. I'm pretty sure it was this one particular restaurant, where the waitress took my card and must've written down the numbers to use later. AmEx caught it quickly and issued me a new card, but it was a pain to change all of my bills to the new number. Then, earlier today, I had an authorization on my card for a bar that I haven't been to in probably over a month. It's around the corner, so I walked over to ask them what was up. Turns out, they were having an issue with their credit card processor, and several of their customers were getting re-charged for past transactions. I didn't even know something like that was possible. This is where systems like Apple Pay (and presumably Google's version) will really solve this problem, as they generate a unique number for each transaction which can not be re-used. I already try to pay cash when possible at bars. I may have to do a better job of sticking to that.
August 4, 20159 yr Bars can be really lazy about upgrading their credit card machines so that they generate the same unique numbers you describe. For whatever reason a lot of businesses look at the credit processors as gangsters that can't be reasoned with so they don't do anything that would raise the bill. Meanwhile they don't negotiate with the processors to get their rates down so they're paying 5% when they could be paying 1.2.
August 5, 20159 yr the other thing that is happening is a movement to chip technology from swiping magnetic card strips. that makes fraud a lot harder and double charging impossible. the usa is very late in the game to use this even though its now standard most places around the world.
August 5, 20159 yr The credit card processors have instituted a deadline of October 2015 for companies to use EMV chip technology. After October, if a business has not updated their technology, and experiences fraud, they assume the risk of that liability. Card companies will no longer absorb that loss.
August 5, 20159 yr What I find odd is that, while most of my credit/debit cards now have the chip, most retailers still do not have the terminals to use the chip. Some chains like Target do have new machines that have a place to insert the chip cards, but they are not yet encouraging customers to use them like that. I actually haven't tried to use it yet, maybe I will do so next time I'm at Target.

I actually haven't tried to use it yet, maybe I will do so next time I'm at Target. I'm in Canada for work fairly often, and the chip readers are the only option some businesses have (they have eliminated the swipe readers altogether). They are most convenient in bars and restaurants - the waiter brings the portable chip reader out to the table and the transaction and tip is completed at the table. It's a much better process than having a waiter disappear for 15 minutes with your credit card. There's also one accurate final transaction - there's no need for the credit card company to show one pending transaction and alter it when a tip is entered later.
August 6, 20159 yr its supposed to be a lot safer to use too because it creates a unique code for every transaction instead of holding data like the old magnetic strips do. more: http://www.creditcards.com/credit-card-news/emv-faq-chip-cards-answers-1264.php
August 7, 20159 yr I'm pretty sure the deadline got pushed back to sometime in 2016. We already have the chip reader. Not everyone will have the new cards by Oct. 2015.
August 12, 20159 yr Anyone want to buy my house? Wife took a new job and we're moving. She's already started and I'm watching the kiddo and finishing the house prep. Hopefully the school year starting won't impact our sale. Pleasant Ridge was hot all summer.
August 12, 20159 yr SW Michigan. Probably Kalamazoo. It's a tricky thing to do with a dog and a toddler. We will be a lot closer to home, though. So that's nice.
August 12, 20159 yr Very nice. Pleasant Ridge shouldn't be too hard to find a buyer. But moving is always stressful. Good luck!
August 12, 20159 yr Thanks. Hoping it goes up next week. I think it'll have an aggressive price point for size and amenities. First thing I do when I move into the new place is going to be to throw out all the stuff I just packed.

August 17, 20159 yr I quit going to gyms several years ago because I couldn't take it anymore. The music and the pea-brain atmosphere (from both men and women) is completely awful. Granted I went to an all-boys high school but overwhelmingly the music in the weight room was heavy metal (Slayer, Pantera, occasional forays into punk like Agent Orange, etc.). When you join a generic gym, it's Justin Bieber and other testicle-destroying material. I belonged to a gym with a big inspirational quote on the wall by Henry Rollins. I joked to the trainer (does any trainer have a sense of humor?) that they should crank some Black Flag. He had no idea what I was talking about. I told him Henry Rollins used to front a punk band called Black Flag. More blank stares.
August 17, 20159 yr Oh no, were you okay? That post reads as an insecure teenager trying to prove he's a "man."
August 17, 20159 yr Can't argue with Slayer in a gym or locker room. I remember getting to high school and finding out they left us in the locker room unsupervised. This inspired me to bring a yellow Sony Sport boom box with Hell Awaits in it to school where it was an instant hit after gym class.
August 17, 20159 yr ^ The last time I belonged to a gym I lived in Queens and the place was located in a basement and played some sort of Eastern European metal. Now I just work out in my own basement. My public high school had similar music, though, with the added component of the cheerleaders or volleyball team occasionally occupying the same weight room.

This inspired me to bring a yellow Sony Sport boom box with Hell Awaits in it to school where it was an instant hit after gym class. I just had a horrible flashback to fifth grade, which for me was the year The Beach Boys released "Kokomo". A particularly bossy girl brought her little cassette player to gym class every week and played Kokomo every single week for a year. It was the single and the cassette player was one of those that "flipped" the tape automatically so it repeated over and over again. This is back when Jimmy Buffett was enjoying his meteoric ascendency. Somehow Kokomo and only Kokomo migrated from The Beach Boys catalog into the Jimmy Buffet world. A lot of kids who had parents who were into Jimmy Buffet started listening to Jimmy Buffett also. It was like a proto-Dave Mathews.

I enjoy lifting weights too, I'm just referring to the rather large subset of weightlifters who are boneheaded bros who don't even lift for any other reason than to look muscle-bound and intimidating but act like condescending know-it-alls. The worst are the trainers when you first sign up at a gym. They try to push the free personal training lessons on you. I already know what kind of diet and exercise is effective for my goals, and its based on actual research. They act like they're kinesiology, physiology and biology experts but if they were, they'd probably have a job that pays more than $10 an hour. They give people all this advice tailored to an individuals goals and suckers believe their bs because they see their physique and figure, "well, they're in really good shape, they must know what they're talking about" but said trainers or countless other giant know-it-all boneheads at the gym don't talk about how they have someone in the bathroom injecting steroids into their left butt cheek.

August 17, 20159 yr Yeah I first joined a gym I got along with that guy (can't remember his name) really well. I got into decent shape pretty quickly. Then he switched to another gym and I went through 3-4 other guys who were totally obnoxious. These guys didn't understand that I just wanted to lift weights a few times a week and be in okay shape. I didn't want to eat 4 chicken breasts a day. The one guy announced "In 6 weeks...you're gonna have a 6-pack!". He didn't understand that I didn't *want* a 6-pack.
August 17, 20159 yr Do you know what happened to that bossy girl? Did she turn into a productive adult?
August 18, 20159 yr So.... we went on a little mini family vaca to Hershey/Harrisburg PA this past weekend and when we returned there were four messages on our answering machine for a "Gwendolyn" from SW General Hospital saying that her husband was in the ICU and he wanted her to come to see him. He apparently was in very poor shape. We called SWG back and told them they had the wrong number. They apologized and said they would fix it. Then, last night, we get another call from SWG again for Gwendolyn. My wife tells them once again they have the wrong number and that she told them that last night. They again apologize. Worried that some poor guy is on his death bed and his family doesn't know where he is, my wife spends less than 5 minutes on google and tracks down this lady's contact info. Turns out, two of the numbers had been switched on the hospitals records and that is why they were calling us. It was a "921" number, not a "291" number. We call SWG and tell them of their error last night. Then this morning, we get yet another call from SWG for Gwendolyn. UNBELIEVABLE!
August 18, 20159 yr For a while my house number was one number away from the Franklin County parole office. It took me forever to figure out why I was getting so many calls from jail.
August 18, 20159 yr For about 4 years my phone number was almost identical to someone named Steve. I'd get call after call asking for Steve late at night and get voicemails about "after parties" and "backstage parties" and all this BS. Eventually I asked someone who called telling me that I was missing the epic party in Beverly Hills who the hell Steve was. Apparently it was Steve Lobel, manager of Bone Thugs N Harmony. I was getting calls about parties Bone Thugs were at and people were looking to talk to their manager. Turns out a typo on his business cards lead to all this. It died down after a handful of years but every once in awhile I'll get a drunken call asking for Steve.
August 18, 20159 yr Growing up, my house number was identical to a local pharmacy except an 8 was a 0. We got lots of calls to the pharmacy from very elderly people asking about their prescriptions. Trying to explain to them that they had dialed the wrong number was sometimes really difficult.

I'm imagining all the incriminating voicemails/texts one would receive had that been the manager's number for DMX, TI, Lil Wayne, or some rapper like that that. Or if it were Jay-Zs, you might get information about where the secret illuminati meetings are being held.
August 18, 20159 yr I never got anything even remotely interesting. Well, if I was an adult living in LA at the time I could have easily gotten information on all the best mansion parties that were happening. But I was a teenager living in Broadview Heights so it was useless to me. Oh well. I had actually forgotten about it until recently when some very drunk girl on some sort of photo shoot called wondering where her money was. Then all the memories came flooding back.
August 18, 20159 yr Do you know what happened to that bossy girl? Did she turn into a productive adult? I suppose I could do some investigative work on Facebook and then rush to a conclusion. The real mystery is where a handful of the rowdies I used to run around with ages 8-14 are hiding. Have they all been in jail since 1997? How in 2015 can there be absolutely no trace of a person online?
August 19, 20159 yr Funniest damn thing I've seen on youtube in a while. How did the software developers screw this up so badly?? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
August 20, 20159 yr Funniest damn thing I've seen on youtube in a while. How did the software developers screw this up so badly?? I suspect it was semi-intentional, or left in on purpose sort of like Christian Kirksey in Madden '15.
August 20, 20159 yr I can understand the car flying away, spinning, off into the distance as an exaggerated effect of the impact--that does look pretty cool but what's up with that half second right after impact where the car was just nudged a little bit? Then all of a sudden it goes flying! I don't think anyone expects video games to be realistic but you at least have to keep the unrealistic aspects consistent! Hehe.

August 20, 20159 yr I know some people on the techy end of the spectrum who have little to no identifiable information online on purpose. They are constantly online and participate in forums, gaming, etc. but manage to stay completely anonymous. It takes effort, and it's something I don't think will be possible in 10-20 years. Of course, in Ohio it's pretty easy to dig up property and voting records, so the only true way to stay offline completely is to never vote and never own property. One would also have to manage to never get arrested, as it's pretty easy to search court records as well. The vast majority of people aren't aware of how readily available many public records are, though it varies substantially from county to county and state to state. In Hamilton County, it takes about 20 seconds to find someones property record. Voting records are a bit more complex, but the state offers a simple delineated text download that I get every year that has names, addresses, and record of which elections (and which party primary) everyone voted in. It's always fun to look up a very politically opinionated person and find out they haven't voted since 2000, or tell someone exactly how much they paid for their house when they don't want to tell you.
