December 8, 20168 yr ^^ I hate how a fair number of white dudes are now fist-bumping. It primarily comes from Eminem-type white guys, but it is expanding out into the broader working class. They play it off like they're accepting of you, but it's really an act of passive aggression.

Sort of like an "If your parents like that music it's not cool" thing with teenagers.

I agree that generally it is pretty stupid, but I've done it at work (at restaurants) all the time along with everyone else because it's more sanitary. No sense in someone with really dirty, greasy hands shaking hands with someone who just washed theirs. Putting your hand out for a fist bump is also a great way to get out of a dominant handshake.
December 8, 20168 yr Why are dress socks paper-thin when almost every pair of dress shoes on the planet are painfully uncomfortable? And why is it so hard to engineer a pair of dress shoes that don't kill your feet? There has to be a solution to this. I have to wear two pairs of socks, one over the other, any time I'm wearing them. just wear black crew socks http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

December 9, 20168 yr Gold Toe makes some very comfortable mens dress socks. I stuck the insoles from my Nike's into my dress shoes; that helped a lot but still nothing like tennis shoes.
December 9, 20168 yr "Today we lost a great pioneer of air and space in John Glenn. He was a hero and inspired generations of future explorers. He will be missed." Finally an accurate tweet.
December 9, 20168 yr Who is actually paying attention to Twitter, let alone Trump's tweets? About every six months I go on Twitter and a minute later I'm like...yep, this is still totally stupid. Trump could help sink Twitter, in an inverse of Bush's mountain biking making biking uncool. Is it simply a coincidence that bicycling rose in popularity in 2009, after our only president to be seeing riding a bicycle with any regularity was out of office?
December 9, 20168 yr I'm surprised he didn't just say "John Glenn is dead!" Also, yes, it is a coincidence. No one knew W. mountain biked.
December 9, 20168 yr Also, yes, it is a coincidence. No one knew W. mountain biked. This event was the site of probably his funniest quote (although not captured in this clip), after biking with the China women's mountain bike team: "I...could not make China's women's bike team".
December 9, 20168 yr I'm not denying he did. Just stating that if you ask 100 people if they knew he mountain biked, probably 98 would say no.
December 12, 20168 yr Looking back after Trump was elected, George W. Bush was pretty awesome. Not a fan of him initiating the NSA and their unwarranted surveillance but other than that, he was pretty great in the grand scheme of things.
December 13, 20168 yr Looking back after Trump was elected, George W. Bush was pretty awesome. Not a fan of him initiating the NSA and their unwarranted surveillance but other than that, he was pretty great in the grand scheme of things. He'll be remembered well for rather emphatically refusing to follow in the footsteps of FDR/Earl Warren et al immediately post 9/11. Which may be a part of why he refused to even vote for Trump.
December 13, 20168 yr It goes: 1. Slavery 2. Vietnam 3. The Filipino genocide 4. And then Iraq. W is directly responsible for the fourth most horrific foreign policy decision in US history. No rose colored glasses please; the man's fervent, gleeful ignorance led to tens of thousands of deaths and hundreds of thousands of injuries and trauma globally. For absolutely nothing. That's the only thing he should be remembered for. And I'm not even going to bring up all the other disasters of 2001-09 of which he failed his country miserably.
December 13, 20168 yr Better that than losing over a million Allied soldiers and millions of Japanese soldiers and civilians.
December 13, 20168 yr Bush will be remembered in history books for being the president who achiever the highest approval rating of all time - 90% at one point in 2001. His dad was actually second place, at 89%.
December 13, 20168 yr  He'll be remembered for going from the highest to one of the lowest during his presidency.
December 13, 20168 yr Bush will be remembered in history books for being the president who achiever the highest approval rating of all time - 90% at one point in 2001. His dad was actually second place, at 89%. Yeah, great. All he needed was one of the worst domestic attacks in the history of the country to pull that off. I bet you would have had the same approval rating if you'd said afterward "we're gonna get those guys!"

I bet you would have had the same approval rating if you'd said afterward "we're gonna get those guys!" In retrospect he handled it reasonably well, and what he refused to do, vis a vis American Muslims, is where he showed leadership.
December 13, 20168 yr I'm not knocking him or his response (other than Iraq). I'm knocking the notion that his 90% approval rating wasn't the result of the country coming together in a brief moment of unity and solidarity after a national tragedy.
December 13, 20168 yr ^ But he showed great leadership in the wake of that tragedy. Poor leadership wouldn't have resulted in such a high approval rating. If he would have acted apologetic like Obama, for example, and said something along the lines of 'Well, we don't know the motivation of these attackers...' he wouldn't have gotten anywhere close to 90% approval. He didn't, though, and his speech on 9/11 will likely go down in history as one of the greats: http://edition.cnn.com/2001/US/09/11/bush.speech.text/
December 13, 20168 yr I'm not going to argue with you, because we'll never agree. I'll only say that Obama isn't as spineless as you make him out to be and no one...repeat...no one would have made any apologies or equivocations after that event. It was as clear an example of good vs evil as you could ever imagine seeing, and I sincerely hope no other president will ever have to be in that situation ever again to test that theory.

It's that simple. You don't need a history book to know how utterly asinine that was. And you don't send our troops into battle unless you can take care of them afterwards. Did George W. Bush, the great leader, do a damn thing to fix the VA hospitals?
December 14, 20168 yr Gotta be some other bibliophiles here…. I found it kinda cool today that one of my favorite authors posted his disdain for “Catcher In The Rye”, a book I found to be severely overrated. Which reminded me of an old question I’ve asked: how the hell is CITR a “classic” and “The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread” not. It’s the latter that’s in a league with “The Outsiders”, not IMO the former. Which leads to the question: Has anyone ever heard of it outside the Cleveland area?

I feel it and I admit I was exaggerating but I'm just imagining what Trump is likely to do, given his recent behavior when he isn't even technically president, yet.
December 16, 20168 yr McDonalds is so ridiculous. A while back when fast casual restaurants like Chipotle, QDoba, Panera, etc. were on the rise because they served much higher quality food at the same price, McDonalds basically launched a campaign defending its brand and one of the things they would brag about (in addition to offering salads - loaded with ranch dressing and putting a bag of apples in their happy meals) is how many hundreds of thousands of African Americans they employ. I'm sure McDonald's is far from being the only company to do this but they apparently had no idea that it just makes their image worse and that they would have been better off not pointing that out. Everyone knows that those jobs are not only part-time (meaning no benefits at all) but also that it pays minimum wage with very little opportunity for advancement, considering a raise in those kinds of jobs only come from being promoted and you only need about 1 manager for every 10 associates. The other day I googled "why did McDonalds get rid of the Reese's McFlurry? and now that I'm on Youtube right now and it knows to scan my cookies to prompt the right ads, I'm forced to stare at a McDonalds ad that says, "America's best first job." Well, that's funny because almost every time I go to McDonalds, at least 70% of the staff is in their 30s-70s. There's been times I've gone to fast food restaurants and there's nothing but sweet old ladies working behind the counter. Don't act like you're doing society this huge favor, taking on and training all of our unskilled teenagers and teaching them valuable skills that prepare them for life. I can't believe McDonalds is still successful. The only great thing about the place is their McFlurries and almost every time I need one, the milkshake machine is mysteriously down anyway. "Supersize me" is one of the most telling and entertaining documentaries I've ever seen. That guy literally gained like 30 pounds, experienced decreased cognitive function and even suffered from erectile dysfunction after eating McDonalds for a month.

Plus, breakfast. That has always been the best part of their menu and expanding its availability was particularly brilliant. I wonder how breakfast is working out for Taco Bell. They really don't open early enough to be contenders, I would think.
December 16, 20168 yr I'm nostalgic for the McDonaldland days when there was zero guilt or shame associated with eating there. The only people that would shame you were old ladies who wanted everyone to eat pot roast, peas and mashed potatoes instead.
December 16, 20168 yr BTW I learned from my research, MCFlurries might be entirely gone soon. These candy companies like Mars don't want their product to be associated with a product that has more sugar in it than what you're supposed to take in, for an entire day. :-/ McFlurries aren't even that big. They're like 12 ounces. I asked them if they could load up a bucket full of Oreo McFlurry for me and insisted that I would pay for it but they wouldn't do it for me.

They are nothing more than the pseudo-modern equivalent of those busybodies.
December 16, 20168 yr The only place I'll eat McDonalds these days is overseas (my coworkers and I call it the "Embassy"). Here in the USA McDonalds doesn't taste like it did when we were kids because it's been so filled with processed crap and pink slime, cooked on an automated cook-a-microwave-grill thingy. Anything to prop up the stock price by a few pennies. While overseas, in Europe for instance, where there are consumer protection laws on food content, McDonalds still tastes like it did 30 years ago. This should go in the "Decline of a Great Nation" thread....
December 16, 20168 yr While overseas, in Europe for instance, where there are consumer protection laws on food content, McDonalds still tastes like it did 30 years ago. That's for sure. Eating McD's over there for the first time triggered a specific memory of eating at the old South Upper Arlington McDonald's during the Mac Tonite days. That location has been Chinese food for decades now.
December 16, 20168 yr Speaking of bullsh!t, I'm tired of all these SJWs that are so oblivious to the real problems we're facing in America, right now. They're mostly young people in their 20s who have been sheltered all their life and think the biggest thing they need to be concerned about is inventing more genders when they've already come up with at least 52 of them so far, most of which are just redundant as hell. Inventing gender-neutral pronouns and preaching to white people about how they need to recognize their alleged INHERENT racism. Give me a break. I can think of 1000 more social issues more important than this. The insane heroin and opioid epidemic for example, which has been rising for over a decade. I lost a cousin who ODed on fentanyl and my brother is a heroin addict. My friend said he ran into him a while back at a gas station and said he was afraid to even shake his hand, they looked so sore as he was clearly shooting up on them and missing veins. Would be nice if people who had all this time on their hands could focus on real problems in society, like that. Instead, I see people raising awareness about what pronouns I should use so that I don't potentially hurt the feelings of .03% of the population. Or see headline news about people protesting the shooting of the Somali guy at OSU, who, "when you think about it" was the "real victim." Get the f---k out of here. You people make me sick.
December 16, 20168 yr There's somebody out there that wants those underemployed rural-dwellers dead from heroin. That's why nobody's speaking out about it unlike the crack epidemic in the '80s.
December 16, 20168 yr There's somebody out there that wants those underemployed rural-dwellers dead from heroin. That's why nobody's speaking out about it unlike the crack epidemic in the '80s. No, it's more likely because they know that cracking down on doctors prescribing opiates is what has led to the heroin epidemic. Once again, government doing things without thinking through the likely consequences has done more harm than good. If everyone addicted to heroin was instead addicted to legally manufactured opiates and had medically supervised access to same, we'd be much better off.
December 16, 20168 yr A lot of people are going straight to heroin. I had two coworkers OD...one asked to borrow $40 from me and he died the next day, so it's likely he OD's on the drugs he bought with the money I leant him. I naively didn't know that he was doing heroin and he seemed like a pretty nice guy. That was back in 2010, I think. One of my best friend's brothers and his girlfriend got into it without any precedent. It's incredible how they continue to be functioning people but also are incredibly good liars. This has been going on for about five years.

My brother started off with pills but once abusable oxycontin got phased out and the government started cracking down on all those pain clinics, it simply became a matter of supply and demand. Small supply, huge demand. His drug dealers were suddenly pushing heroin instead because it's cheaper and a more available product that they can consistently carry.

Why aren't they solving America's real problems like the heroine epidemic?

Why aren't they solving America's real problems like the heroine epidemic? I don't like them, either! What a partisan society we live in, where me expressing my hatred for SJWs warrants assumptions that I align myself with Republican law-makers. You see, I tend to do this crazy thing where I think for myself and form all of my own opinions, based on critical thinking and I damn sure don't trust the government or most politicians on either side, period. I know that all I can do is sit back, eat some popcorn, watch the sh!t-show that is American politics unravel and complain about what I don't like, on message boards and other social media sites.
December 16, 20168 yr ...like the heroine epidemic? Heroine? I thought "hero" was a gender neutral term these days. Are you assuming the genders of our American heroes?

December 16, 20168 yr ^ Well be thankful for that - if they didn't auto-correct it for you, your message would be snagged up by the DEA via the NSA's database, and you'd end up on a list.
