February 10, 20187 yr I only carry large bills. Oh boy... I always go with the broke line. I spent my last money on this meal.
February 10, 20187 yr Northside has gentrified quite a bit since your last visit. Really? It was somewhat up and coming, even at the time. It was known as a gay ghetto which inevitably makes it ripe for gentrification. It was a neighborhood with a lot of quirks. I'd hate to find out that a lot of that went away, though.
February 10, 20187 yr I had just bought something at a store in East Cleveland and I'm in the parking lot about to leave. This older lady walks up to the car and asks me "can you spend twenty?" I'm like "on what" but she just kept repeating it. Then I realized what she meant and I took off in a hurry.
February 10, 20187 yr "I can't help (politely)" If they pursue, "I said I can't help you (angrily)." Does the trick 3/4 of the time even if they walk away swearing, calling you racist, the usual. Avoid eye contact at all times. Never shake their hand. Don't interact on any level. Don't say "sorry." Don't show them your phone. Don't be shy to announce you'll call the police - and then actually do it in front of them. Walk away only if the situation is rapidly disintegrating. If you live in a city, you know the drill.
February 10, 20187 yr I only carry large bills. Oh boy... I always go with the broke line. I spent my last money on this meal. I use the credit cards only line...but I keep waiting for one of them to whip out their phone with a Square account!
February 10, 20187 yr ^ I use that sometimes too. Sometimes if I have loose change I'll give it to someone and say it's all I have. A few cents to be left alone is worth it sonstimes.
February 10, 20187 yr I use the credit cards only line...but I keep waiting for one of them to whip out their phone with a Square account! I always just say I don't have anything. My wife tried the "I only have cards" line once at the Over-the-Rhine Shell station, and the guy pointed out the ATM. That actually got a laugh out of me before I told him there was no way that was going to happen. That Shell station is also the location of the one single time I've ever given any spare change to a beggar. I specifically brought 4 quarters to use the air machine to fill up my tires. The machine says $1, but apparently only needs 75 cents, and some guy was fully aware of that fact - so I was caught standing there very obviously holding a quarter I didn't really need. I thought about just saying "no" for a second, but he offered to pump my tires, so I gave him the 25 cents. I didn't have him pump the air, though - I didn't trust him to get the pressure right.
February 11, 20187 yr ^ I use that sometimes too. Sometimes if I have loose change I'll give it to someone and say it's all I have. A few cents to be left alone is worth it sonstimes. Danegeld and Danes come to mind. It's one thing when someone is walking through a public place. Quite another when they are sitting still (i. e. a stationary target) in a private establishment.
February 11, 20187 yr I had just bought something at a store in East Cleveland and I'm in the parking lot about to leave. This older lady walks up to the car and asks me "can you spend twenty?" I'm like "on what" but she just kept repeating it. Then I realized what she meant and I took off in a hurry. I've never seen anything like East Cleveland. For those who don't know, East Cleveland doesn't refer to the east side of Cleveland; it's a separate municipality, though it is on the east side. I've never seen so many mentally ill people and drug/prostitution and panhandling activity out in the open, like that and I've been all over the east side. Maybe it has to do with their notoriously crappy, corrupt gov't. There was a story a few years ago that barely made any headlines at all, locally let alone nationally. East Cleveland's city vehicles were operating without insurance. A police cruiser struck and killed a man, in a cruiser that wasn't insured. Obviously the family sued but I have no idea what ever came of that or if East Cleveland ever made any attempts to get their act together. I'm guessing they haven't since it goes without saying that no one gives a sh!t about East Cleveland. Everyone in NEO, including E. Cleveland's city officials, know that. If that sort of negligence happened in a municipality like Shaker Heights, it would end up on CNN.

February 13, 20187 yr Whether the animals are a protected species or not, hunters who hunt purely for sport deserve comeuppance and are no better than the assholes involved in dog fighting rings. Same excuses - oh it's cultural, oh it's how I was raised, oh animals don't count or feel pain or have souls - same ugly behavior. This urge to wear cameflouge and shoot, maim and kill something - lord help us.

February 25, 20187 yr Very sad today after losing my my cat of nearly 15 years. But this story, posted on twitter in multiple parts, gave me a smile that even tough guys can have a soft spot for our furry friends.... __________ Angry Staff Officer @pptsapper So I ran into a former 13F (artillery forward observer) today at a party. Naturally we started telling Army stories. So no shit, there he was, in Iraq, with 2-37 Armor (I think). The unit had picked up a local mutt, as units do, named Trackpad, because, well, armor unit. He was the unit doggo and when guys came back from patrol they had a fuzzy friend to meet them when they rolled back in. However, this is the US Army, where fun is outlawed, so the order came down to get rid of all the dogs on bases. So the guys took Trackpad in their vic and drove him to the other side of the city and dropped him off - they weren't gonna shoot him. They're on their way back and bam, ambush. My dude is engaging when all of a sudden he hears a bark from behind him. He recognizes the bark immediately: it's Trackpad. He turns behind him and sees a dude hefting an RPG about to light him up. Dude opens up and takes down the insurgent, pretty much saving the convoy. A minute later, this small shape comes running out of the building where the insurgent had been: it's Trackpad. He'd followed the convoy for about six miles, spotted the insurgents, and started barking to alert his old friends. Saved some lives for sure. Dude obviously grabs Trackpad and puts him in his truck. They roll back to base and literally everyone on the convoy walks into the CO's office and is like, "look. This dog saved our lives. Ain't no way this dog is going anywhere." The command caved and Trackpad got to stay on base. Dude rotated home eventually, and he found out that Trackpad was later adopted by another soldier and made it home to the good ol US. Yeah, that happened. This is why I love trading stories. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
February 25, 20187 yr Really sorry to hear about that, Ken. It's a pet but it's rough losing your buddy.

February 28, 20187 yr Wow... really? Poland's flag is literally an upside down Indonesia flag. Google it. They're even the same exact color.
February 28, 20187 yr ^^ That is very cool I should submit it to Sheldon Cooper for his next episode of "Fun with Flags."

March 7, 20187 yr ^but let's not be bashing Target. Stores (at least the smaller versions) are popping up all over Manhattan. There will be one on E. 14th & Ave A, and one recently opened on 34th St. across from Macy's. I was surprised to learn that their store brand of cream cheese is only 79 cents!! That's an unheard of price in NYC. Good if you eat a lot of bagels. Like me. (I should probably reduce my carbs :() http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
March 9, 20187 yr I realized a while back that I've always referred to Ukraine as "the Ukraine" but in recent news articles I've read, I noticed that it's just Ukraine. I wondered if I had just made that up but at the same time, felt that I must have heard "the Ukraine" from somewhere. Apparently, "the Ukraine" is what Russia referred to them as, during soviet times. I wonder why. Why would any country have "the" before the name? That's pretty weird, right? Maybe someone on this forum knows more about it.

March 9, 20187 yr ^^^^^^that's what I always thought it was too. Likewise I always thought Congo was "the Congo." I'm sure everyone referred to it like that ages ago, but it's fully Democratic Republic of the Congo, so I guess that's where to confusion comes in. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
March 9, 20187 yr David[/member] It's Ukraine. Enjoy.... http://time.com/12597/the-ukraine-or-ukraine/ "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Enjoy.... http://time.com/12597/the-ukraine-or-ukraine/ "Taylor has another linguistic pet peeve that he fought to eradicate from the government’s vocabulary during his time as ambassador: spelling Ukraine’s capital as Kiev, rather than Kyiv. Kiev is the Russian transliteration, while Kyiv is the Ukrainian one. " Wow.
March 9, 20187 yr But see, we in America pronounce it with two syllables as "Key-ev" while in Ukraine they pronounce it with on syllable as "Keeve" -- I'm going with the native pronunciation.
