October 25, 20195 yr Not really sure where else to put this so I figured it'd go here. I'll be moving to Pittsburgh soon (out of Cincy), and was wondering if there is anything similar to this site, but for Pennsylvania/Pitt? This site is really awesome, so I know there probably isn't anything quite as good, but if anyone has any recommendations for where they get their urban development news/discussion I would appreciate it!

I was laid off in May of 2009, at the bottom of the recession, and it took me almost 2 years to get a full-time job. In the interim I worked all sorts of odd-jobs (and was laid off two more times by different places). There were many low points. For example, I got a job delivering pizzas (at age 30) and soon after delivered a pizza to my old boss - the one who had just laid me off. But I didn't really care about that, there were actually some nuttier moments, like the time when I fell asleep at 7:30am~ while operating a table saw in a door factory because I was so sleep-deprived from working two jobs. There were many more of those sorts of things. The worst part of these situations isn't what you personally go through, it's the commentary you get from all of the people out there who have never had to go through this sort of crap. You come to realize how much your bad situation and their good situation is just luck. Phrases you hear from them that aren't meant to be put-downs drive you crazy because you can tell they just don't know what they're talking about. Thinking back to some of the college professors I had who liked to act like tough guys and tell you what the "real world" was going to be like - well you can tell they didn't know what they were talking about. They were just lucky. When does the YouTube Series start? ??♂️??♂️??♂️??♂️

Entirely free, super easy to download, and works pretty well. I'm no tech expert, but it's what most of my friends use. I think it's kind of the standard. The worst part of ad block software is that some website detect it now, and prevent you from reading until you whitelist the site. Which is really frustrating.

November 27, 20195 yr I am requesting tom TV-buying advice. I made the mistake of visiting Best Buy tonight and seeing how much better the Sony OLED TV's are as compared to everything else. They're also really expensive. The 65" is currently priced at $1,999...for those of you who have paid attention to electronics pricing over the years, will there be a price drop immediately after Christmas? https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sony-65-class-oled-a8g-series-2160p-smart-4k-uhd-tv-with-hdr/6331595.p?skuId=6331595 Like, say I'm throwing a New Year's Eve party. Is it worth waiting until Dec 26 to save $200-300 or will the price likely remain $1,999 through January and February?
November 27, 20195 yr I don't know if it will go lower but I have been looking at same sony model as well as LG C9. This Sony was $2,800 a few months ago when I was perusing Bestbuy. Another 2-3 hundred would be quite the mark down from earlier this year for OLED tech. I'm in a position that I can wait and see. But I still can't wrap my head around that much money for a TV. I forgot to mention that the bestbuy sales rep was telling me they have financing but if pay up-front they will take 10% off of the pretax total. @jmecklenborg Edited November 27, 20195 yr by viscomi

I have no idea if prices will drop after Christmas, however--and I realize this is probably the worst day to walk into a store---but the day after Thanksgiving is supposed to be famous for 'deals' and Best Buy and other large retailers and probably no exceptions. So if you're so willing this Friday, pop into Best Buy and see what they're asking for that TV as you may find some weekend deals.

So if you're so willing this Friday, pop into Best Buy and see what they're asking for that TV as you may find some weekend deals. The number of televisions sitting out in the middle of that Best Buy was dazzling. It was like 2-3 shipping containers worth of flat screen TV's. Hundreds upon hundreds of them and few of them smaller than 55". Most of them are priced about $500 or less, but the image quality on the cheaper TV's is absolute crap. Everything looks flat, jumpy, and "outlined". The big difference with the hi-end flat screens isn't the OLED technology so much as the much more powerful computer that eliminates the motion lag and weird outlining - two problems that older TV's never had but require oodles of tech to overcome nowadays.

Imagine this on that 65" OLED Sony & my 2000 watt DJ speakers instead of the 21" Zenith we were slumming with back in 1989: It's amazing how all of that stuff from the 80's LEPT out of those horrible, dull screens. How the mono music LEPT out of those 2" paper cone speakers.

Is it worth waiting until Dec 26 to save $200-300 or will the price likely remain $1,999 through January and February? Well the Black Friday special is over. They jacked the price of the 55" from $999 to $1,499 and the 65" from $1,999 up to $2,499. It'll be interesting to see if they drop the prices the week before Christmas or wait until after, and to see how steep that cut is. Right now they're stacking the bills!
December 4, 20195 yr I always check The Wirecutter before making big household purchases, and the OLED TV they're currently recommending is the LG C9 ($2200 for a 65" or $1500 for a 55", and currently includes a free year of Disney+ with purchase). The C9 apparently has the exact same picture quality as LG's more expensive E9 series, just in a slightly less stylish box. From what I understand, OLED is likely to be the "current" TV technology for the foreseeable future -- we are at least a few years away from another technology proving itself to be superior to OLED at a similar or lower cost. So I wouldn't expect the cost of OLEDs to dramatically drop any time soon.

My brother edits cable TV shows for a living and said the big change is in the color space new shows are being produced in, not HD, 4K, 5K, etc. None of that is going to matter in 5 years when "old" TV's can't correctly read the new color space. It's going to make all new TV's automatically look better.
December 4, 20195 yr 8 minutes ago, DarkandStormy said: Is this like a free Consumer Reports type of site? Yes, except that instead of having a complex rating system like Consumer Reports, The Wirecutter simply tells you the "best" thing to buy in a particular category and explains their reasoning for making that choice. Sometimes they will suggest a few alternate products (like a "value" pick or a "high end" pick) but always explain the trade-offs.

December 17, 20195 yr The Best Optical Illusion of the Year Will Mess With Your Head How a game developer used his love of programming to create the trippiest illusion of 2019. Everyone likes a good optical illusion. The right kind of trick can instill a sense of wonder in even the most jaded viewer. Every year, the Neural Correlate Society, a nonprofit that promotes scientific research into perception and cognition, runs a contest to find the world’s best illusion. This year’s winner is a Dual Axis, a series of twisting rings that appear to move clockwise, counterclockwise, and up or down, depending on how you’re looking at it. January 6, 20205 yr My cousin's daughter is "selling" girl scout cookies. The process is completely online now. Like, my 30+ year-old cousin emailed us with a link to the girl scout website. Then you enter your address and credit card info. There is no personal interaction whatsoever with the girl scout or physical cash. I recall the good 'ol days when the girl scouts showed up at your door with the forms. You placed your order and might have even paid up front. They showed back up in a few weeks. Life was as it should be. It's wrong to blow off what went on with those sales, or in my case, candy bar sales. It's usually your first experience going door-to-door. I expanded my scope around age 10 by hanging out at gas stations trying to sell candy bars. I remember getting a few flippant remarks from people. I remember one lady saying my school "had money" and so didn't buy a candy bar.
January 6, 20205 yr You watch, there will be so few people left with sales and people skills that the ones with with them will control nearly everything.
