I read Choke a few years ago. One of the most messed up books I've ever read, but really good. The book is about a medical school dropout who works at a colonial theme park and goes from restaurant to restaurant letting people save him while he pretends to choke on his food. The people who save him feel obligated to make sure he's alright after that and go on to send him checks in the mail for his birthday every year.

He also goes to Sexaholics Anonymous meetings to pick up chicks.

It was a great book and I think the movie is going to be pretty good too. It's from the author of Fight Club. I've read 3 of his books so far.

^ That sounds like a great movie. I love flicks like that. I just watched 'Layer Cake' the other day ... I thought it was fantastic.

I can't wait to see Choke...haven't read the book though. If its anything as demented and twisted as Haunted then I'll be happy.

On the theme of dark movies, has anyone seen Funny Games- I recommend that.

I have seen Funny Games and I hate you for recommending it.  I'm not going to expand because I don't want to ruin it for anyone.

Thank goodness for UO & the knowledgeable people here - when those buffoons come on here (see the Eaton thread), I love how we intelligently and collectively reason the hell out of their paper thin arguments.

Eternal sunshine for former crackhouse! The Brooklyn Paper gets action

The Orient Avenue crackhouse — which, in happier times, appeared in the movie “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” — has been boarded up, thanks to a Brooklyn Paper story.

Williamsburg residents are ecstatic that the owners of a former mansion turned crackhouse have booted a group of vagrants that had turned their tree-lined block into eternal nightmare.

The decrepit home at 59 Orient Ave., which hosted scenes from the underappreciated 2004 Jim Carrey film “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” became a den of debauchery for drifters this spring.

Wow, that's sad.  I love Eternal Sunshine, but I don't remember that house.  Who's house is it?  (in the movie)

Woman in cow costume arrested

By Jennifer Baker, Cincinnati Enquirer, September 30, 2008

MIDDLETOWN - A 32-year-old woman was sentenced to a month in the Middletown Jail Monday after she was arrested and charged with chasing children, blocking traffic and yelling at police - all while wearing a cow costume.

Michele Allen pleaded guilty Monday in Middletown Municipal Court to one count of disorderly conduct, court officials said.

Middletown police said she chased children in the 3100 block of Wilbraham Road and urinated on a neighbor's porch Saturday night. An officer ordered her to go home and stay there.

About 11 p.m., police were called to the 2400 block of North Verity Avenue after receiving a report that a woman in a cow costume was blocking traffic.

Allen had alcohol on her breath, slurred her words, was belligerent and swore at the officer, a report states.

Holy Cow!

Who says there's nothing going on in Middletown on a Saturday night?

Q: Where do cows go on Saturday night?

A: To the moo-vies.

^The pathetic thing about that joke is that I actually laughed when I read it lol.

I think my house is going to collapse.  It's a massive 1895, three story, 50+ foot tall duplex.  They're doing road construction out in front, and avery time they smack the street with that hammer the whole house shakes (worse than it did in the April earthquake.)  Here's the part I'm worried about...I can hear the plaster chipping off inside all the walls every time the house shakes and the wall in my front stairs started bowing today.  It's not a bad bow, but it does protrude about an inch which is enough to cause concern.  I called the landlord, but I don't think he cares...he'll probably get some insurance reimbursement if the place crumbles.

Here's the place (Mine is the brown one in the middle):

MyHouse.jpg

It would ruin the block entirely if this place were to go, so cross your fingers.

That's a nice house. Cool neighborhood.

I'd call the city, pronto.

Your own personal safety may be at risk. A house collapse can be sudden and catastrophic, especially if there's other preexisting damage or structural weakness. Once things reach a certain level of instability, even a small triggering event can cause a cave-in.

I'd call the city, pronto.

I agree. Do you know if there are any "live" connections to gas, electricity, etc?  If that house falls, it will cost more to fix, clean than just repairing the problem.  I'm speaking from experience.  It's not fun.

So, the landlord called.  Apparently the people on the first floor called this morning.  The house is being checked out now.  Five guys pulled up in a van and jumped out with ladders.

My street is INSANE today.  There are people EVERYWHERE.

There's a giant 7-8 foot deep hole running the entire length of the block with backhoes and the like.

My next door neighbor has three people cutting boards and laying a new front deck.

Two houses South is having it's soffits redone today.

The house across the street has a couple of guys painting it.

The house next to that is having new railing cut for it's front porch.

And now my place has guys crawling all over it.

I'm just planning on avoiding the place altogether for the week.  I have a friend a block over who's house I'm going to stay at because there's just TOO much going on.  The noise is deafening.

Luckily I'm a poor college kid with not much to lose...so I'm not too worried about it.  But I would be sad to see the house go because it really is beautiful (just a little neglected.)

I hope you have RENTERS insurance.  You folks "think" you have nothing to lose, but replacing basic necessities is expensive.

If you don't have renters insurance, you better call or research rates/plans in your area NOW.

Good news...sort of.  We have ants and rot.  So apparently a combination of those weakened the wooden laths (lathes?)  and the vibrations are just causing those to break off.  (I'm not sure I fully understand, but whatever)  So the plaster is weak and falling off, but the house is sound.  So that means that the city inspectors are going to be on my landlord's case for the next few months until our house gets up to par.  They also found an illegal gas line going through our kitchen, so that'll have to get fixed.  Basically this is good news, but I'm still staying at my friend's tonight because all that other construction is still going on.

Thanks for your concern though.  It's been one hell of a day.  And luckily I turn 21 tonight at midnight, so I can actually drink to that.

Do they check your house out to see if there are "pre-existing conditions"? They sure do that with health insurance.

When you buy a house, you have a independent home inspection.  Personally, I feel any home owner worth his/her/their salt would have their home checked every other year and prior to any renovation project.

A house requires a lot of maintenance and upkeep.

I have no clue.  I'm willing to say that this place is considered a "slum" so nothing would surprise me.  It's owned by a real estate company in the burbs and I've never actually met my landlord.  There were obvious signs of wear and tear when I moved in...like the back stairway to the basement has collapsed in and none of the windows in the common areas of the house have glass in them.  The rain pours in and the sills are rotten.  BUT I have BY FAR the cheapest rent in the neighborhood.  I pay $195 per month when the location alone is worth like $600/month.

Hopefully my rent won't go up because of this, but I can't see it not going up.  Oh well.

Que the housing inspector!  NO WINDOWS?  Oy!

Yeah, you see what I mean...but those are all in the front and back stairways.  The apartments all have new(er) windows.  The back stairs are just creepy.  They're still in a heap on the floor of the basement.  They never cleared the debris away after they collapsed.
