A Happy Sky Over Los Angeles

Credit & Copyright: Dave Jurasevich (Mt. Wilson Observatory)

Explanation: Sunday, the sky seemed to smile over much of planet Earth. Visible the world over was an unusual superposition of our Moon and the planets Venus and Jupiter. Pictures taken at the right time show a crescent Moon that appears to be a smile when paired with the planetary conjunction of seemingly nearby Jupiter and Venus. Pictured above is the scene as it appeared from Mt. Wilson Observatory overlooking Los Angeles, California, USA after sunset on 2008 November 30. Highest in the sky and farthest in the distance is the planet Jupiter. Significantly closer and visible to Jupiter's lower left is Venus, appearing through Earth's atmospheric clouds as unusually blue. On the far right, above the horizon, is our Moon, in a waxing crescent phase. Thin clouds illuminated by the Moon appear unusually orange. Sprawling across the bottom of the image are the hills of Los Angeles, many covered by a thin haze, while LA skyscrapers are visible on the far left. The conjunction of Venus and Jupiter will continue to be visible toward the west after sunset during much of this month. Hours after the taking of this image, however, the Moon approached the distant duo, briefly eclipsed Venus, and then moved on.

I'm kind of using this post as a test for the google my maps feature.

Both links go to the same place btw.

Cool, I figured out to link "My Maps" from Google. I have been fooling around with it and I always wondered how to share them. Check it out if you're interested.

^ very cool. how do you color in the blocks like that?

When you edit your map, there are little tools.  There is a hand tool, to move things around, a place mark tool, a line tool and then there is the shape tool.  The shape tool lets you use a fill color and you can set the transparency.  It's pretty cool.

I just rented a movie called "Smart People". Since I'm a cerebral narcissist I figured its right up my alley.

I'm watching the previews and they just showed a commercial for a scary movie called Blindness that looks like a ripoff of "The Happening". Booo. I actually liked "The Happening" though. It wasn't THAT scary but at least it was unique. "It" is by far the scariest movie I've ever seen.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP)  --

Amsterdam unveiled plans Saturday to close brothels, sex shops and marijuana cafes in its ancient city center as part of a major effort to drive organized crime out of the tourist haven.

The city is targeting businesses that "generate criminality," including gambling parlors, and the "coffee shops" where marijuana is sold openly. Also targeted are peep shows, massage parlors and souvenir shops used by drug dealers for money-laundering.

Does anyone know that website where you can buy stuff but possibly negotiate a price with the seller? It starts with an "i". It's sort of like ebay.

Nevermind, I found it. ioffer.com

I've decided I want to purchase a laser cutter.  They are $10,000  But I heard you make a lot of money off them charging people to cut and engrave materials.

That reminds me of the time my buddy and I were going to buy a home PC gasket cutter system. It came with gasket material and you could get CD-ROMs with files for every car, truck, motorcycle, piece of heavy equipment and home power equipment ever made. We were going to get filthy rich.

Don't put it out with your boots Teddddddd..

^ Hillarious!!

LMAO  That was great.

The only reason I haven't put a new photo up for a while is because all I have are generic "myspace" photos lol.

Maybe some people don't have recent photos that weren't taken by themselves in the mirror lol.

I monitor my nephews and nieces myspace accounts and ALMOST every teenage or early 20s guy has, what I call, the "bird chest" picture.  WHY?

It's always in front of a mirror hold the camera at an odd angle.  What is up with that.  Oh, and if you're going to take a photo at home, at least clean up your damn room or the bathroom.    :wtf:

LMAO. Luckily I haven't fallen into that group.  I'm one of the few.  Ask them about "myspace angles" and they'll tell you haha.

No, they are only allowed to have friends that I know.  The agreement/compromise is if they want myspace that I have full access to their account.  If they didn't take that offer, their father said "no".

Since, I (aka favorite uncle) can manipulate reason with their father, the compromise is that I have full access to their myspace accounts and I review who they are communicating with.  Most of their "friends" are family members.

I'm having phone problems or else I'd upload the pic.. but on the 4/5/6 line (and others I'm sure), Target has an ad that you can plug your headphones into this thing and hear some new Christina Aguilera song.. and it was so cleverly graffitied with "Go ahead, stick your thing in Christina, every other guy has"

Isn't that a little intrusive?

lmao i'm waiting to run across a picture like that on myspace/facebook.

Isn't that a little intrusive?

Intrusive?  How?  They are children.  My brother told them know they cannot have myspace accounts.  I wasn't sure they need an account, but its mostly for them to communicate with cousins outside the area.  I have a large extended family, I have 30 first cousins, 28 have at least 2 kids.  The kids are very close like we are.

So in order for my brother and two cousins' to allow the their kids to have a myspace, I agreed to "monitor" them.  The kids had to agree to give me their passwords.  It's a "win-win" situation for all.  Unless I've met an "outsider" they cannot add them.

I'm very, very close with my nephews and nieces.  They are damn near my children.  They tell me everything, they share with me the things they would never tell their parents.  I probably know more about their lives then my brother and skank-in-law.

ColDayMan just scolded me for not posting here enough, so I thought I'd better post to make him happy. :)

That's what I do on SSP.  Scold.

Kids are people, and people, regardless of age, need a certain level of privacy.  Besides, the oldest one you mentioned was 16.  That's two years away from being an adult.  Does a 16 year old really require all aspects of their life to be under such intense scrutiny?  I should hope not.

"Kids are people"

Wait until you have some - and THEN tell us that!

If they're not people, then what are they?  :?

Advanced fetuses?

I'm not sure if I've posted of pic of myself before but if I did now you can enjoy it twice as much.

"People" are the average, ordinary folk who walk down the sidewalk, ride the bus, file their taxes, without bothering anyone else. You know, 'People'! :-)

Yes, they are people.  The 16 y/o wont be 16 for another month, however, he has to abide by the rules.  When he got the account, those were the rules.  Next month we'll address that.  It's not like I'm reading every line and every entry. Just the juicy stuff.  ;)

I'm very very very close with them.  Multiple times during the day they  email/text me and tell me to look at something or ask for my opinion. We have a good relationship and I trust them. When my oldest nephew or neice does something my brother doesn't like or says something "smart" in a manner that reminds him of me , my brother will tell me to "come and get child" or says "See, they act just like you....those are your kids". My brother has never been able to compete with me in the psychological war fare arena and I've trained the two oldest well!

I'm not sure if you have children, but that is how things work in my brothers house.  Thats how he and I were raised, but with a lot less negotiating.  What my father said was law, period! What my brother says in his house is law, except the stuff that pertains to me; when I butt in on behalf of the kids or if I'm in a bad mode and I want to piss off my skank-in-law.

I can run interference for the kids as my brother can't say no to me, he knows, if that if he says "no" to a request, they'll hint to me and I'll make it happen, against his wishes. (This is why I'm favorite uncle  ;) ) I act as mediator and we reach an agreement. If my brother tries to play hardball, I tell me niece to cry.  Which makes my brother feel like crap.  If that doesn't work, I casually mention it to tell my Mom.  My Mom will then rip into my my brother for denying her grand daughter(s). [thats gravy for me since it makes my skank-in-law feel worse than my brother]  >:D
