If I was one of your employees, I'd FedEx you a turd.

You could do it on their behalf.

Then I would have you destroyed!

My staff loves me.  In the 12 years I've been here only 2 people have left on their own and I've fired 3.

See I'm not an evil boss.  I generally want to know how my team members do their jobs.  What tools I can provide to make their jobs easier for the greater good of the projects/brands they are working on and the overall improvement of the company.

I was walking the Min Pin last night on High St. and some drunk girl on the second floor of a Mediterranian restaurant stuck her head out of the window and pointed at me; looked back at her friends and screamed "Look, it's a gay guy!!"  :wtf: She said it loud as hell - like she just saw Bigfoot. Even if I was a gay guy, who the hell would be surprised to see one on HIGH St? lmao

So I will drive my final mile as a car owner in a few hours.  I was on my way to visit the family when the engine had problems at the first exit In my home state.  I'm waiting to be picked up and stealing hotel wireless meanwhile.  I'm tired of dealing with an old car despite the current problem being very minor.  I just don't need a car in Chicago, with transit and zipcar/igo next door.  I've arranged to have a tow company haul it away and sell it.  I'll mail the title Monday.  I'm officially car free.  No more insurance, repairs, monthly parking, city permits, or street cleaning!

Cheers!  You'll love it.  Just don't let a soul talk down to you.  As far as I'm concerned, you're smarter and better than them anyway.

Cars suck

I don't know how you do it, I kept my car even in New York City.

I guess I'm dumber and worse than you, though.

I dont know how you keep a car, with all the subways and cabs.  Parking is expensive.  Parking a car in NYC is equivalent to some people's mortgage/rent per month.

Everyone I know that has a car in NYC has had it vandalized  at least once.

Chicagoans take pride in owning cars even if they don't use them.  I see really nice cars collecting dust in $300/month ramps, that have probably not been removed in several months.  The reason I kept my car around was for trips back to Michigan or to go to other cities.  I never really trusted its condition though.  So the whole idea of keeping around beat up vehicle, paying money for it to sit in a garage rusting away just didn't make any sense.  This isn't a forever thing for me though.  I had already started saving up money for a new one.  If I ever move to a different place that has parking, I'll hopefully have enough by then to buy a new vehicle.

Until then I'll just continue life as usual.  I actually don't even use public transit all that much.  I walk or bike everywhere.  What's interesting is the only time I used the CTA trains was to get to my car!

I bet walking would have been quicker lol!

LOL, well if we would have gotten the Olympics, we could have updated our antique train set.

Chicago needs a single-person Maglev network.

Ok, ok, so we put some new tinfoil over the exterior lol!  Rob, what station is that?  Why are the trains so short?

I once worked with a woman who lived on the Upper East Side whose husband had a car and would drive four blocks from their apartment to get ice cream.

Edit: Problem solved.

That was at Howard Street, 1982, likely a Saturday. Off-peak it was common for single cars to run between Howard and Linden (Evanston). Those single cars only ran back and forth between those two stations; they didn't run through to/from the loop.

Same with Skokie/Dempster cars; Skokie (now Yellow Line) ROW was fenced between Howard and Prairie Avenue, and cars ran 3rd rail. They also had pantographs to pick up from catenary between Prairie and Dempster, and they changed on the fly. Then as now, there were no stops between Howard and Dempster.

Wow, I only know Howard as the huge station it is today.  Well I'm on megabus right now back to the chi.  Loving the free wifi

Howard was quite busy then on weekdays. It might even have carried more traffic than it does now, as the ridership loads in the eighties justified running "A" and "B" trains in skip-stop service. Rush hour could be complete pandemonium. The station structures were terribly tired, shabby, worn out and outdated. Only in the past couple of years has Howard gotten the rehab and updating that it needed for years.

The crazy thing is it's already falling apart.  The parking structure is falling apart, and the unleased retail looks shabby.  To top it off, last time I went by the elevator, the doors were half open with the elevator stuck between floors.

How 'bout that?!

I think you spend too much time with your head in the clouds.

Why wont it show the pictures? I used direct link on imageshack, highlighted each link and clicked on the little picture icon. What am I doing wrong? I thought that was how I always got it to work.

You probably need to insert "IMG" at the beginning and "/IMG" in brackets [] at the end of each of those "links".

You have to be a Premium Member to get your photos to show!

Asians are always alert, happy and smiling. It looks exhausting.

i sense a conflict of interest.  :-P

No conflict.  The more people that see the movie, the more shoes I can buy!  HA!

Another good childhood book was the Westing Game. I bet that would be a good movie adaptation.

yet another awesome children's book was Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs.

Sadly, the movie adaptation looks horrible.

Well look who made it!

Sony?

I just looked it up and it seems to have gotten fairly good reviews.  I might have to check it out now...i won't rush out...but, i'll take a look.  maybe get it from the library eventually.

NO...avoid it!

I dunno, I like the director and it seems to have a good cast and the preview I saw looked kind of weird.  I enjoy weird.

Which? Where the Wild Things Are or Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs?

MTS, if i get it from the library it won't really do much for sales figures.

Cloudy...avoid it.  See it two years from now on bootleg.

I went and saw Cloudy with the kids last weekend. It was OK to pretty good. Definately better than the Shrek type pandering that passes for kids movies today.

For the Evil Dead fans, Bruce Campbell was the voice of the mayor and he was pretty funny/sleazy.

note: I would have posted this in the "What Are You Reading Now?" (I think that's what it was called) thread but it seems to have disappeared. I guess no one is reading!

Just read an excellent book called Knockemstiff, a collection of short stories based on the Ohio town of the same name (SW of Chillicothe) where author Donald Ray Pollock grew up(http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/05/us/05ohio.html). I guess the book falls under the category of what's been called white trash lit (a la Dorothy Allison—“Bastard out of Carolina”); filled with desperate, hopeless drug addled characters with no hope for the future (kind of what outsiders expect Ohioans are typically like anyway--lol) The writing is superb. Pollock started to write later in life--after working in a paper mill in Chillicothe--and according to the book jacket is working on an MFA at Ohio State.

that thread is probably being cleaned if you can't find it...at least that's the BS that the Man is shoveling at us.

My kids went to see it 2 weeks ago with their grandmother. Haven't stopped talking about it yet. Now I have to read the book to my daughter every night.

^ i think (hope) where the wild things are is gonna be the bomb. i have faith in spike jonze so i hope so.
