March 15, 201015 yr It's usually attributed to Mark Twain, but there's no verification of that. Anyone could've said it, at any time.
March 15, 201015 yr .... "Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago." - Warren Buffett
March 16, 201015 yr I'm thinking of writing a fiction book. I've already started a pretty comprehensive outline. You guys think I'm a good enough writer?
March 17, 201015 yr I'm thinking of writing a fiction book. I've already started a pretty comprehensive outline. You guys think I'm a good enough writer? yes. seriously. you had me thinking that you thought Con Air was actually a good film! http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
March 17, 201015 yr Any Cleveland UOers going to the Club at Key Center today? They are open to the public and having what sounds like a fun st. patty's celebration all day. You can get corned beef sandwiches or for a little bit more, a full Irish buffet. I'm hoping this will be better than the stuff that's in the overcrowded bars and such down on street level, and since I work next door, I'm going to go check it out at lunchtime.
March 17, 201015 yr I'm thinking of writing a fiction book. I've already started a pretty comprehensive outline. You guys think I'm a good enough writer? Can't wait to read it!
March 17, 201015 yr We will need to proof read it for you, and the movie must star Nicholas Cage. I already know editors. If it's ever adapted for the big-screen, it will definately include Nicolas Cage (but he'll probably die within the first 10 minutes). I'm thinking of writing a fiction book. I've already started a pretty comprehensive outline. You guys think I'm a good enough writer? yes. seriously. you had me thinking that you thought Con Air was actually a good film! lol! I'm thinking of writing a fiction book. I've already started a pretty comprehensive outline. You guys think I'm a good enough writer? Can't wait to read it! Really? :)
March 21, 201015 yr HELP CLEVELAND PEOPLE!!! I'm having a layover in Cleveland tomorrow and it's long enough that I'll be able to ride the train into Tower City for about an hour. I REALLY want to purchase a real Ohio flag 5'x7' from somewhere there (either in the airport, downtown or somewhere between on the Red Line Rapid.) This is going to be from 9-10am tomorrow, so store hours are a concern as well. Also, last time I was there, I remember the ticket machine at the airport being weird. Do I need cash? And if so how much for one round trip?
March 21, 201015 yr I have zero suggestions as to where you could buy a flag. Not anywhere in Tower City, I should think. Maybe in a gift shop in the airport? It's $4.50 for a round trip. You pay at a machine before you board and receive a ticket to swipe to get through the turnstiles.
March 22, 201015 yr No flags, oh well, but Cleveland is looking fantastic. Tower City is alive and Euclid Ave is gorgeous. The weather is crap today, but I guess that means it's Spring so cheers to that!
March 22, 201015 yr I didn't think you'd be able to get a flag, sorry about that. Buy something from the Olive and the Grape, they are dying on the vine (pun intended).
March 22, 201015 yr I would have thought maybe "The Only Cleveland Store" in Tower City might have had some Ohio flags, but I doubt you are still in Cleveland right now.
March 23, 201015 yr LOL, the CityKin blogger took my chart. :) If you want a better citation, I got it here: http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2010/03/chart-of-the-day-8.html CBC (below) Good job :-P v
March 24, 201015 yr Sooo tired... I am an idiot, I need to get to sleep earlier... Edit: Can I kill a thread or what?
March 28, 201015 yr yeah congrats to you and your relatives -- wish i had a dj uncle who could cut & scratch on the wheels of steel!
March 28, 201015 yr Congrats. You newbie uncles always make me ponder my existence as the youngest child with generationally older siblings and 1st cousins who are retiring.
March 28, 201015 yr So UO has another uncle!!! I'm an uncle. Wow. Congrats DJ. What's the name? Thanks!! Well there's a funny story to this. They didn't want to know the gender of the baby until it was born, and they couldn't ever decide on a boy name. So they were hoping it would be a girl. Well, guess what? It's a boy!! So they are scrambling to think of a name haha.
March 28, 201015 yr I'm an uncle six times since 1973, and since then a great-uncle a dozen times. The thrill has mostly worn off. :-D
March 29, 201015 yr DJ that's funny (and congrats!). We had a TERRIBLE time picking a girl's name. We finally settled on the perfect name, and a week later went to a family picnic and found out my sister in law had named her new dog the girl's name we picked out. DH and I looked at each other like "uh-oh." We spent another month furiously debating girl names. Turns out we had a boy. :)
March 29, 201015 yr Haha that's awesome. Well they thought of the first name. It's funny because I was thinking biblical names like Jacob or Caleb, and they picked Asa. Not sure about the middle name yet but at least the baby as a name haha.
March 29, 201015 yr ^ Did you at least get a "Robert" nephew out of all that? Just one nephew's middle name, but he's turned out to be the best of the bunch. I've never gotten much respect from my parents or brothers. The feeling is largely reciprocal, but they started it.
March 30, 201015 yr Things NOT to say to a pregnant woman: - Congratulations! I was just looking at you the other day and thought you were gaining weight! - Are you sure you're not expecting twins? You are so huge that there has to be another baby in there. I wasn't nearly that big when I was pregnant!
March 30, 201015 yr Oh yes, I got the twins comment as well, and I ONLY GAINED 20 POUNDS THE ENTIRE PREGNANCY. People just love to make you feel like a big, fat house, don't they?
March 30, 201015 yr Things NOT to say to a NON-pregnant woman: - Congratulations! I was just looking at you the other day and wondered when the baby was due? Oh man, if I had a nickel for every time someone asked me when I was due....
March 31, 201015 yr I parked at the $3.50 lot next to the Crazy Horse downtown today. I sure hope my car is safe there. What a bargain; cheaper than RTA and no overhead announcements!
March 31, 201015 yr I parked at the $3.50 lot next to the Crazy Horse downtown today. I sure hope my car is safe there. What a bargain; cheaper than RTA and no overhead announcements! I used to park there every day when I worked on Rockwell. Your car will be fine there.
March 31, 201015 yr We have a a fifty cent lot her in downtown Akron that I used to park in, of course you have to hike over a freeway on ramp to get to downtown, but hey it's cheap. Now I split a garage pass with the carpool mate.
March 31, 201015 yr That's GREAT news AJ93, thx. I'm just extra paranoid as we just bought a new car seat.
March 31, 201015 yr Ah Little RnR is now in the big boy car seat? Question, do they steal car seats, especially if it is in there with those LATCH straps? I have an engineering degree and I never could figure out those LATCH thingys. I always ended up using the seatbelt, especially since we switched seats between cars.
March 31, 201015 yr YES, he moved to the big boy convertible car seat last weekend. He probably should have moved a couple of weeks ago but my obsessive research makes purchasing something like this take awhile. I am sure someone would steal a car seat. They are EXPENSIVE. The really good Britax seats are $300-400 (we did not get a Britax). LATCH is great, it makes installation so much easier. I installed our infant seat myself and I am NOT mechanically inclined. This one took a little more doing, as we had to put a rolled up towel under it to get the angle right so mr RNR wanted to get in there and push down on it and stuff to make sure it was tight and secure. We have not yet taken it to the fire peeps to get double-checked but I'm sure we have it in right, we had the last one in right as well. The big drawback now is that unlike with the infant seat, which is a carrier, we had to buy separate car seats ($$$) so there's one for each car as sometimes he picks up and sometimes I do.
March 31, 201015 yr Uh, I guess I am into laissez-faire parenting. I never even knew you could have your car seat checked to see if it is installed right. Oh well all three are still alive. All three are in booster seats, which are way easier than carseats, especially when they can bucle themselves in.
March 31, 201015 yr It's not so much that you "can" but you're "supposed to" have them inspected, though obviously a lot of people don't. Something like 85% of car seats are installed incorrectly. If you had tried for 3 years, spent $$$$$$$ on IVF to get pregnant with your one and only baby, you'd be paranoid about doing everything right too. :) Maybe if I could have gotten to the point where I'd have had 3 kids, I would have been more laid back about parenting, but he's my only baby.
March 31, 201015 yr You take care of that little RnR. I know it was a long tough road getting here, so I can understand your paranoia If we would have stopped or were limited to one (or two) child(ren), I am sure my views on parenting would have be different. The first kid was by the book all the way (except for the inspecting the carseat thing, who knew?). Once they out number you your focus shifts to hoping that you get the bare minimum done, instead of doing everything perfectly. Hmm, too bad UO didn't have a thread for this..... :) BTW, I am half joking about the carseats , I didn't know that you could have them inspected but I always made sure they were secure and the straps were position correctly across their bodies. Of course then they unbuckle the top buckle wiggle their arms out and start leaning out of the seat while you are driving 75 mph on the highway.
March 31, 201015 yr It's little things like, with my DH's car, he didn't know that the base for the infant seat had a crank on it and that you were supposed to crank it til the seat sat straight on that particular vehicle's seat - it had a level/bubble on it and when cranked to the correct level, the bubble would be in the middle, so that was a minor adjustment. It's stuff like that that makes the seats incorrectly installed, not the obvious stuff that most people do. I read a lot (or at least I did before I had a kid, ha ha) so I poured over a lot of baby books to find out stuff like car seat inspection. But yeah, there's only so much you can do. Little RNR slipped and banged his head on the side of the tub last night because Bad Mommy forgot to put down the anti-slip things in the bottom of the bathtub before his bath.
March 31, 201015 yr ^ Don't feel too bad. I dropped my kid once. Yes, dropped him. He was about 6 months at the time and I had picked him up from the crib, but he jackknifed and he caught be by surprise and ...whoops! I caught him before he completely landed, but he still bonked his head. I guess on the upside, if anyone asks him as an adult "did your father drop you on your head when you were a kid?" he can reply that, yes, in fact, he did.
March 31, 201015 yr ^ My three year old has a chipped front tooth from a bathtub exiting lunging incident when he wa around a year old. There was no slipping, he was standing and I went to pick him up and he tried to lunge into my hands and missed. Totally caught me off guard. Wife was not happy about that one.....
March 31, 201015 yr These stories make me feel better :) So far the worst thing I have done is pinch his leg in the bouncy seat strap and cut his thumb when clipping his fingernails.
