Currently, Frontier's website does not list Nassau as a destination, so that would mean opening a station.  Frontier flies from Montego Bay (Sangster) to ATL, PHL, STL, MIA, and MCO.  Adding a flight to CLE would not be that  difficult.  I must be influenced by the two Jamaican food places now in Lyndhurst.

More international flights arriving Cleveland

By Ken Prendergast / December 14, 2023

Joined by Cleveland airport officials, Frontier Airlines today announced that it will be starting nonstop flights to Montego Bay, Jamaica in March with an introductory low fare. The new, direct flight is the first new international flight from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport resulting from its new crew base there. But it may not be the last.

^ Nice. I noticed the updated logo now reads “Cleveland Airport System”. I wonder what that’s about? A quick Google didn’t turn up anything, although I do see that the airport’s website has had a thorough and long-needed updating. Looks good.

My hovercraft is full of eels

Looks like UA is bringing Vegas and Phoenix back as destinations.  No new routes, but it will be nice to have UA back on these routes.  Cleveland is definitely maintaining itself as a United "focus city."

are they permanent or temporary?  Feels like all the airlines play with phoenix February-April due to spring training and spring break

I would hope permanent.  Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the US now and should have year-round nonstop service from CLE.

I'm not sure, but both routes are bookable at least through Memorial Day of this year.  Perhaps they are waiting to see how they do before extending them any further.  Both are on the 737MAX8.

Agreed.  I'm still surprised American Airlines is only seasonal on this route.  I'll be connecting through PHX from CLE on the way to California in a couple months... seems like it's also a logical connector to the West Coast, especially if you're on AA and want an alternative to DFW.

The article on cleveland.com (https://www.cleveland.com/travel/2023/12/united-airlines-adding-nonstop-flights-between-cleveland-and-las-vegas-phoenix.html) says they are temporary. March 7th through May 20th.

The flight times kind of suck. Flights from Cleveland land after midnight eastern time. Both of the return flights are red eyes.

That's because they are using aircraft that would just be sitting at CLE overnight.

If CLE is ever going to be a "big city" airport, then need to get the traffic situation fixed.   This is from my arrival the other night at about 11:30 pm.  Literally everyone just parks downstairs and blocks up the arrivals roadway.   The resulting traffic was backed up way out onto 237.    There was one CPD car sitting there with it's lights on, but as far as I could tell the officer was just keeping warm in his car.

And it's a PITA when waiting to be picked up and trying to find your ride among all of those vehicles.

I was always taught to to to the departures gate...might be a PITA to navigate to it but usually it works out, especially when a bunch of planes show up at the same time.

Also annoying - the cars camping on the highway waiting to pick ppl up, just use the cellphone lot it's not that big of a hinderance to go over there. Alternatively Buffalo would provide free parking (not sure if they still do) for <1HR in their long term lots. I don't think we have the parking capacity to do it but also a thought.

Agreed. Try this in Chicago and you’ll have a cop screaming at you quicker than you can say Lou Malnati.

Has anybody ever been picked up after arriving at SAT? Much worse than CLE.

While dropping someone off at the airport this morning I noticed there is still a lot of equipment on the hotel roof. So apparently it won't be coming down anytime soon.

Cleveland Hopkins to increase parking rates in new year

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is planning to raise its parking rates between 4.5% and 14% as of Jan. 1.

The rates for the airport's Smart Parking Garage — which was fully reopened in October after being renovated — as well as its Red, Blue and Orange lots will all increase by $1. The rate for the Brown Lot will increase by $2.

The new parking rates will be:

  • Smart Parking Garage: $23/day; first 30 minutes free; $7/hour up to 3 hours; after the third hour, the daily rate applies (+4.5% for the daily rate)
  • Red Lot: $21/day (+5%)
  • Blue Lot: $21/day (+5%)
  • Orange Lot: $18/day (+6%)
  • Brown Lot: $16/day (+14%)

Flights from CLE to Costa Rica maybe. At least the CR Minister of Tourism says so. “With new direct services from cities like Cleveland, St. Louis, Austin, and others commencing just this year, we foresee strong continuation in arrivals from our core North American markets,” he said.

I will travel to CR over all Caribbean and Mexican destinations.  Its an incredible place, and wow, would i like ot see direct service there.

^itll be interesting to see what carrier will expand there.  My guess is it would be Frontier as Frontier only goes to Liberia from Atlanta.  I could see Frontier wanting to expand into LIberia and using its new focus city Cleveland to American passengers.  HOwever, the other two cities in the article, St. Louis and Austin, i dont see Frontier serving those.

So which destination would provide the "Sun" for the "Sun Country" moniker? I have been to Minneapolis many times and it is not very sunny there and of course Cleveland is not quite the haven to get your vitamin D either.

I checked their route map.  Apparently they fly to a lot of sunny destinations in the south.  However, the service from CLE is seasonal from May 17th until Labor Day, not exactly peak time for travelers heading to those destinations.

It was a bit tongue n cheek.  I have been in both Cleveland and Minneapolis in May and have seen snow. I have been in both in September and, while not seeing snow, it has been cold (more so in Minneapolis than Cleveland)

They everyone to the MSP hub to funnel them to Florida or a sunny destination out of their hub. They have been around for a while now so their model has proven successful.

Wow, that’s a lot of seasonal routes on that map.

Yes, there are.  I'm guessing those seasonal routes to the south are not in operation between May 17th and Labor Day.  Perhaps that is why they are adding CLE in that timeframe due to the availability of aircraft that would otherwise be idle.

FWIW Sun Country also does a lot of sports charters (MLS, but mostly college), I know it doesn't have much to do with CLE, but I wonder if having a plane or two in Cleveland helps with that business at all.

I noticed that the people of Seattle, Boston and Lansing will fly year round to Minneapolis for their Sun exposure, lol.

Hopkins continues to see is passenger numbers recover since 2019! With the steady news of new routes (seasonal or otherwise) and carriers, hopefully the trend continues.

Passenger traffic was up big at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport in 2023

SCOTT SUTTELL

January 25, 2024

Quote

The airport on Thursday, Jan. 25, released data showing Hopkins served 9,868,868 passengers in 2023, up 13.5% from 8,693,866 passengers in 2022.

Hopkins' 2023 passenger figures mean the airport now is at 98.3% of the passenger levels of 2019, the last full year before COVID devastated the airline industry and much of the economy. That year, Hopkins served 10,040,817 passengers. (Hopkins' website list yearly passenger figures since 1999.)

Hopkins has seen a steady climb since COVID knocked its passenger number down to 4,122,517 in 2020. In 2021, the airport served 7,282,475 passengers, which rose to nearly 8.7 million in 2022.

So check this out.  Cleveland Scene caught wind of the above article and posted this article:

and as of this morning, they still had the quote from the CEO of the San Jose airport saying Cleveland will be an expanded market, and then when you click on the original link, it looks like they have removed the quote suggesting Cleveland?    But they also do not note that the article has been edited.  Real strange stuff.  Wonder if Hopkins officials got a hold of the article and made complaints.  Why so clandestine?

The Tico Times also removed mention of St Louis and Austin; so I'd guess it was an airline, not an airport, that complained.

Interesting point, and its hard to pinpoint an airline that would cover those three markets?  Maybe frontier, but they arent really players out of Austin (and second rate at St. Louis).  Wonder if it could be Costa Ricas airline Avianca, who is star alliance with United?

Southwest has a decent presence at each of those airports (especially Austin and St. Louis).

Avianca is actually the flag carrier of Columbia, not Costa Rica.

If only there were a train that went directly into the station...also, if you're in a rush or feeling stingy you can always take an uber to the Brookpark station and hop on the train from there (you don't get dinged for the airport geofence w/that...or just use the park and ride spaces...).

Or maybe, its worth the added cost to some to avoid public transportation🤷‍♂️

First half capacity comparisons.  Looking pretty good for CLE.
