I've made several of those ghost flights over the years usually only to lose my three seat couch after a layover.

Never been on a flight with just a couple people, but once I was on a regional jet home that was about 1/3 full. That was an on-time connection; not one where everybody was rescheduled to different flights. They couldn't have made money on that flight.

wow...slow news day.  This happens more than one would think.  If a flight is substantially delayed, pax will be placed on other carriers that interline with the delayed airline.  In the case of LGA, because of slot restrictions, it's a use it or lose it deal.  So however delayed, that flight will go.  For those who stick out the delay, you sometimes have a next to empty flight.  I personally remember flying EWR-ATL one morning with 4 people on a 727-232A.  We moved al four to first class for weight and balance purposes.

Guess what -- it was on Bloomberg news this morning!

REALLY, WHO WANTS TO FLEE THE CLEVE?

It was NY-bound. So the story is, no one wants to flee FROM the Cleve!

I thought the picture he posted he was sitting in first?

... and ABC News, Fox News and USA Today, among others; it was also an international story, so apparently it doesn't happen all that often. ... I first saw it on Huffington Post.com and, then, on cleveland.com.  (And if you'll click on Mr. O'Leary's beer blog link, you'll note the PD's Allison Grant and IIRC the local Fox TV anchor tweeting, asking him to call them...)

I thought it was quite an amusing story, esp as much as I fly... Who wouldn't want, essentially, your own private jet?  (yeah, we know MyTwoSense already has his, but I mean the rest of us)... The pilot even came out and shook hands with him.  Too bad he didn't have a longer flight.  He might have gotten free booze... er, O'Leary, that is.

Yeah, thank goodness... You can imagine the endless Cleveland jokes if the flight was the reverse.

In the immortal words of MTS, oh lawd!!!

Despite the bad weather and emptiness of the Rapid on a Sunday -- yeah, it's often slow on an off Sunday to begin with; then throw in the cold temps and, well... Nevertheless, O'Leary seemed to enjoy Cleveland and had good things to say about the city,  esp the restaurant/bars and the WSM... Hopefully Positively Cleveland or somebody will encourage him to come back when it's warm.  The man is clearly a 15-minute celeb.

Yes, that's a refurbished car. The color schemes, walls, floors and (unfortunately) the seats are the same as the ones installed in the refurbished Blue/Green line cars.

River fires weren't really all that uncommon, but we all know how that went.

Before the rise of social media how often does a "I had the whole plane to myself" story get told. You sure as hell don't tell that story from third person. "Yeah my friend had a whole airplane to himself." OK, well maybe somebody tells that story, but the listener doesn't care.

^ a friend and i had the whole plane back from france one time, it was great.

Sunday is the reason that most people that I've known think Cleveland is a small city. Between restaurants being closed, downtown dead-zone and lack of people out (outside of the burbs), I get it.

That is very definitely a Blue/Green Line car

Oh, yes, I see the articulated "hinge" area at the middle of the car. BTW, here's info and discussion on the Red Line car refurbishment program....

Frontier's website directed me to Hopkins page this morning and I was pleasantly surprised to find a new website for the airport...especially since I HATED the previous website.  Much cleaner and more modern feel.

United Airlines cuts in Cleveland leave eight cities as top picks for business nonstops

By Alison Grant, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Eight cities that fell off the nonstop map out of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport when United Airlines pulled its hub from Cleveland are on a most-wanted list by corporate travelers.

Hopkins and Greater Cleveland Partnership officials said Thursday they're working together to restore nonstops to:

+ Austin

+ Kansas City

+ New Orleans

+ Providence, R.I.

+ San Antonio

+ San Diego

+ St. Louis (already has two nonstops a day but goal is to increase frequency)

+ West Palm Beach

"In our conversations with companies, these cities come out on top," said Rob Recker, senior vice president for marketing and development at the partnership, the region's chamber of commerce.

Im really surprised we dont have a direct route to the pacific northwest, nor does it seem like people want one.  I would love if Alaska Airline would do a non stop from Seattle or Portland...

I thought Frontier had a seasonal non-stop to Seattle?

They should spruce up the Eastern and PanAm gates.

^Probably as a result of Spirit's announcement, Fronteir just moved their departure---which would be about 30 minutes after Spirit's--to an afternoon departure.

Very interesting article! TSA regs also hurting NFO shippers....

Businesses are feeling sting of airport cutbacks

Fewer direct flights and smaller planes mean less room for cargo, more headaches

By JAY MILLER

Like many people in Northeast Ohio who rely on the commercial airlines, the Cleveland Clinic's Dr. David Bosler has had to rethink his plans since United Airlines severely cut the number of direct flights out of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

Only Bosler, a pathologist who heads Cleveland Clinic Laboratories, isn't a typical airline user.

While he's responsible for an average of two itineraries a day, the travel is not taken by him or the other pathologists on staff. Rather, it's blood and other highly perishable living tissue that do the traveling.

The Clinic labs have a national clientele. They are among only a handful of labs in the country that have the sophisticated equipment to do the most advanced blood, DNA or tumor testing, as well as what's called molecular diagnostics, that may be too perishable or too critically needed to wait for overnight parcel service. Its 100 pathologists have a menu of 2,400 tests.

I do...vividly remember going to pick up my grandparents after a trip they had one to Mexico.  I'm guessing it's the only time they ever flew anywhere.  There was no security that I remember, and pay toilets, which as a youngster confused me.

For this summer, NAS has not returned despite UA saying so last year. Also not surprisingly, UA will not fly a 3rd daily to LAX as it has in past years, though Spirit will begin flying 1x daily in April, so at least the capacity is there.

I landed at CLE last night at 6:15 pm and was surprised to see the C concourse security checkpoint was already closed as I exited to baggage... What? Have I missed that all these years or has funneling everything to B that early long been the norm?

That's TSA.  Back when it was private contractors, enough people complaining to the airport could get it reopened.

Funneling to B has been the norm, but I would be surprised to see it so early.  I guess it makes sense for TSA budgets--might as well have the open access right in the middle of all three concourses, especially since A & B are seeing more action with the reductions at United.

They are a few years off, but it's never too early for city officials to start the schmoozing.  Even if it is a low-cost airline experimenting with trans-Atlantic routes....

$15 Europe flights? Ryanair board OKs plan to fly to USA

Europe's largest discount airline says it will begin flights to the United States and plans to sell some seats for less than $15 each way.

The board of Irish-based Ryanair on Monday OK'd adding trans-Atlantic flights. That ends years of speculation about when the airline might eventually turn its sights to North America, though the actual launch of the service will take several years to get off the ground.

And yesterday the airline announced that it has no plans or intentions of initiating any transatlantic routes....

^Yeah, I that was strange....I wonder what happened in the few days after the initial announcement...

JetBlue will use Gate C4, in case anyone was wondering.

Interesting, the United concourse?  They have the one gate for daily non stops to FLL and BOS?  Two total flights?  or more?

Boston is 2x daily, so three flights in total.

Very.  I wonder why they didn't go to A.  I could see them avoiding B because of South West.

Probably the best gates were apart of getting them to launch in CLE.

I'd hope the airport would have closed parts of A and B and renovated.  They could use the D Concourse while renovating other concourses.

JetBlue effect: I am traveling to Boston on Wednesday.. United non-stop roundtrip was $1200 weeks out (didn't buy). As of Thursday, when JetBlue begins, United now $600ish non-stop roundtrip - and that's today's quote, 5 days away.

This is not surprising.  B6 while not a member of Star Alliance, does have a tie-in to LH (Lufthansa) which is a member.  UA, also being a member, will probably provide certain services.

Not unusual.  B6 announces BOS months ago.  UA's yield management (like all lines) quotes high fares weeks out to see who bites, then incrementally lowers over time before rising again as seats are filled.  Don't expect B6 and UAL to be dramatically different.  In the Raleigh market, B6 and DAL compete head on and DAL is frequently lower

I think all of those other than Orlando are homeruns.
