I knew it!! Well sort of -- I thought the business community could guarantee seat purchases through Heathrow. I figured the NE Ohio business community could guarantee more seats to the UK than to Germany.

I like the direct to Germany better.  Maybe the businessperson has to get on another flight regardless, but the tourist likely has much more options out of Frankfurt without getting on another flight.  Sure, you can take the chunnel to Paris or Brussels from London, but I like this move.

And you avoid East Coast airports, especially Newark. That's always a good thing.

It would only be every once in a while, but I would definitely use a direct flight to Frankfurt.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced Friday that a Cleveland airport executive has been appointed CEO of Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

Ricky Smith Sr., the director of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport as well as that city's Department of Port Control, will serve as the executive director of the Maryland Aviation Administration. He'll oversee BWI, Martin State Airport and other public-use airports across the state.

Don't forget that TATL pax from CLE are going to a various cities in europe/middle east.  FRA is a much easier connecting airport than LHR.  Also LH and UA belong to Star Alliance.  While UA no longer has a hub in CLE, they do have a loyal cadre of frequent fliers who would benefit from a Star carrier serving CLE-TATL

If someone wrote a narrative of their trip would it be called a TATL tale?

Not much coverage on Ricky Smith's leaving CLE for Maryland Aviation director post.  The article above nor the one in the PD (http://www.cleveland.com/cityhall/index.ssf/2015/07/cleveland_airport_director_ric.html) do not give a date for his departure, or any info on plans for a search for his successor.  Anyone have any insights?  I'm surprised his departure has not spurred more discussion here or on the PD's website.

When we used to have a real newspaper in this city, it would have been the subject of some coverage that wouldn't have been satisfied with a canned statement. Now we don't even get the canned statement.

It's not a totally surprising or suspicious move though, considering he is from Maryland and previously worked at BWI. Would still have liked to see some coverage on it thought.

Then give us the canned statement.

On a unrelated note - Hopkins is a hot mess of construction right now. I flew out first thing Tuesday morning and man it's gonna be a long next year during these renovations. They had firefighters in there directing people into different lines!  I'm definitely going to have to get the TSA pre check as a result of the delays there.

Long lines at Cleveland Hopkins Int'l Airport during construction; Hopkins: Passengers increased

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport released a statement Friday afternoon noting that the airport has had an increase in passengers for the first time since United's service reductions in 2014.

“Cleveland Hopkins has bounced back better than any other airport that’s lost its hub status,” said Airport Director Ricky Smith. “This isn’t just something we’re saying here at CLE, it’s something that industry experts across the country are saying.”

Last year in May, the airport had 399,502 scheduled seats; this year in May, it had 445,177 scheduled seats. This is an 11.4 percent increase.

Cleveland Hopkins manager says he's assigned to 'mop closet' for blowing whistle on snowstorm staffing

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The former head of airfield maintenance at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport says management retaliated against him for disclosing that Hopkins was understaffing its snow- and ice-clearing crews, potentially putting passengers and planes at risk.

Cleveland Hopkins flights now among cheapest in nation

July 29, 2015 UPDATED 4 HOURS AGO

By CRAIN'S CLEVELAND BUSINESS

Travel from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport has gotten more affordable.

Last year, it was 66th on cheapflights.com’s annual airport affordability report. This year, it’s jumped to the No. 8 spot.

Cheapflights.com looks at average airfares on its site during the month of June for a mix of popular domestic and international destinations. According to the report, the average airfare out of Cleveland Hopkins was $278, eighth lowest among 101 airports. At the top of the list was Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport, which last year ranked 77th.

Both Ohio airports used to be major traffic centers for a dominant air carrier, which used their near monopolies to keep fares high — United Airlines at Cleveland Hopkins and Delta Airlines at Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky. Though the loss of flights that accompanied the airlines’ decisions to cut back at both airports has limited or eliminated direct service to some cities, the wallets of passengers through both airports are benefitting from the end of their domination by a single airline.

Nuts.  So we now have Frontier, Spirit, JetBlue, United and American all going to SE florida.  Do Clevelander really go to Florida that much?

Clearly.

Amazing isn't it?  These were some of the same routes that UAL said they could not make work out of CLE.  And that's when they had a monopoly in the non-stop market.  Now they're adding capacity to three low yield markets.  The UAL spokesman reiterated in the article that CLE lost money for years (no one ever produced numbers to support that).  It will be interesting to see how they work out now.

On the other hand, UAL still has a huge fixed-cost operation in CLE owing to the financial obligations associated with the hub closure so adding a few flights here and there might add to revenue - even of they are marginal.

So, we're going to have a bunch of airlines crammed in C, and a bunch of airlines crammed in A.  Are they going to close B too?

As an almost exclusive flyer of Southwest, I'd much rather be in concourse C than in B.

I dunno...Now if the bartender heard it from a flight attendant then you got something here.

They should move them all to C/D, then tear down A/B and put up a couple state of the art concourses.

Paciugo Gelato is closed!  I went for my monthly flight and much to my surprise and sadness, Paciugo is closed down.  That's a shame.  I always liked getting a little snack from there before an afternoon flight.

^were their prices really high?  How could a business fail with such a captive market?

The Paciugo also closed in SouthPark Mall so maybe there were some other issues.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well that's interesting.

Also, there appear to have been some post-labor day cutbacks that I noticed.  Delta cut the flight I frequent to Raleigh.  I've seen nonstops on Frontier and AA to Raleigh that also seem to be gone too....

And finally, I hope that dude that caused the evacuation at Hopkins this morning at least got a parking ticket.  Who the heck parks their car in the departure lane and leaves for 20 minutes?  I'm just happy that I was already inside security when that went down!

So currently no non stops to Raleigh?

They shut down the Red Line station too. I sure hope that was the guy's first visit to an airport since 9/11.

I don't believe so.  I'm not sure where our UO flight experts pull their frequency numbers from, but I couldn't find a nonstop to RDU.

I checked for flights one month out and found 1 nonstop each way....

No, I checked the actual schedule and the flights weren't there.  Did they seriously get rid of it for like a month?  B.S.  United did that to me one time at Christmas with CLE-STL.

Edit:  Apparently it was only this week that the Delta RDU nonstops vanished.  For our airline experts, why do airlines randomly cut a route for a week or two?

There is a rampant rumor on the flyertalk.com forums of the United Club in Cleveland closing down.  Is it truly just rumor or is there potential substance to the rumblings?

^UA is still the largest carrier passenger-wise; I'd very very surprised if they closed it and don't expect it to be true.

I'll contribute to the rumour, having been told by more than one bartender there that it's going away.

^UA is still the largest carrier passenger-wise; I'd very very surprised if they closed it and don't expect it to be true.

Very true.

UAL still has a large premium base in CLE and they still fly to alot of non-hub cities from CLE and there are some connections.  For what its worth, they just started the new food menu/concepts at CLE.  Now, if they drop the non-hub flights, then they might close it but recently they've added Florida back and with new management you never know what's down the pike

I looked at flyer talk and the "rumor" seems to have originated with a contributor who heard it from their son....I wouldn't call it rampant.

Routes are cut and added for a variety of reasons.  Most likely in this case it's because summer is over and with a holiday weekend the biz traffic is sparse.  Could even be aircraft availability.

I wonder...did UAL sacrifice CLE to please the PA????  After all there's been a lot of conflicting reasons behind CLE's demise - from Smisek himself.  I mean if UAL was flying to CAE once a week to please a PA board member, what else was going on?

^ how would giving up CLEbenefit the NY/NJ PA?

It definitely benefited O'Hare.  Not sure of the flight frequency through Newark, but that certainly went up as well....

It definitely benefited O'Hare... but there has to be a limit to the expansion there.  I understand not having two Midwest hubs, but I think United may have benefited from keeping at least a small hub operation, kind of like what Delta does with Cincinnati.  Still a hub, just many fewer flights.
