the allegiant flight to Savannah is really cheap and quick.  Cool town and it should be good golfing weather in SC/Georgia that time of year.

Thanks a lot you guys. Some great ideas.

Ive been also thinking about where to plan my friends bachelor party.  Not sure what all of your budgets are....but that WOW flight to Iceland is not a throwaway, especially if you were to go in late fall.  I bet the fares would dip even more. Probably no golf, but Icelandic hot springs, geysers and the whole experience would be fun with friends

^I was thinking the same thing--Iceland. November is greyed out right now on Wow's website for some reason--but that could be prime $99 tickets---cheaper than florida or vegas. That would be FAR MORE memorable and intersting than a golfing event somewhere. It is pricey to STAY there, but you could all rent a house or apartment and hang there. Make sure it has a kitchen as you'll want to stock the fridge and be able to cook as having to eat out all the time in Iceland can get really pricey.

AND---you'll be supporting the Icelandics---especially against all the anti-Cleveland naysayers who "guarantee" that either Icelandair or Wow will be gone after one season as Cleveland can't support both airlines.

PS--congrats on the engagement.

Looks like a 777 arrived at CLE today.  Diverted flight from Houston to Newark.  I got in from Maine through Philly last night aorund 10....just beat that storm or i wouldve been stuck on the coast for a few days

Can someone explain something to me?:  Why if you go to Hopkins website they randomly have arrivals for cities that we dont serve.  For example, today we have a flight from Pittsburgh and a flight from Savannah?  Are these diversions?  I swear i see this all the time though

Were they ExpressJet?  ExpressJet has a maintenance facility at CLE and they regularly ferry planes in and out.

No, neither was...one was a Delta CRJ7 from PIT (probably diverted last night) and a mainline United 737 from SAV. As far as I know, United has seasonal service there but this is unrelated.

^thanks.  i misread the airline.  glad i asked, its all confusing to me

the airport's website gets a feed from another service that includes all those flights, some of which are charters or one-time flights.

Another explanation could be repositioning flights. If the Savannah flight was supposed to go to New York and then Cleveland (which is very possible) but New York airports were closed (which they were), United would ferry the plane from Savannah directly to Cleveland where it would resume its normal schedule.

My flights from New Orleans on Delta lately have been half the price of Southwest

Does anyone know whether Frontier plans to bring back their “seasonal” CLE-SAN flights?

^i think they axed San Diego for good.  But you never know with them.

That's a shame that they axed San Diego. I flew to San Diego on Frontier last July and it was only $200 round trip. Plus both flights there and back were almost fully booked.

I'll never understand the airlines.

IS the new Wow air and Icelandic air seasonal service or year round?

I knew WOW was seasonal, but I thought IcelandAir was year-round.  Their schedules show reduce service from five to four flights weekly after September, but they are still operating CLE-KEF into January, which is as far as I looked.

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

Not possible. They are offering year round flights. Only says seasonal because the number of flights per week is reduced. Those flights, even in the winter, will be crucial for business travel to Europe.

^ Did some more research and found out that they out BOTH SEASONAL SERVICE ONLY.....

https://www.inspiredbyiceland.com/plan-your-trip/travel-to-iceland/flights

Where is this from? It's not accurate.

It shows Icelandair as year round from Orlando. They don't operate that route from Jun. 12th to Aug. 31st. I know first hand the traffic flow on that route is all one way to Mickeyland in order for Icelanders to escape those long, dark subarctic winters.

Per Google Flight:

WOW is seasonal with their last flights in October.

Icelandair is year round, I found their scheduled flights thru next Feb 2019.

Icelandair is 5x weekly with the 737MAX and 4x weekly in the winter with the 757-200, while WOW Air is seasonal and operates 4 weekly flights from May 4 through October 26

so based off this article in december, http://www.cleveland.com/travel/index.ssf/2017/12/southwest_airlines_to_offer_li.html , it looks like they extended this well into April.  I just booked a non stop on Southwest to MSY on Sunday the 15th.  They also offer it on the 22nd and 29th.  Any chance they are testing the waters here?  I was fortunate to get spirit non stop back on Tuesday.  really, really nice to have non stops to a city where many conferences are held. Saves a ton of time.

The Long Goodbye: on rather short notice, UA is pulling the plug on its Milwaukee flights effective with the June schedule change. Southwest will have the route all to themselves.

I was looking last week at booking the United non-stop to Milwaukee in April and the fare was $199 roundtrip (likely matching Southwest which has been as low as <$100 RT at times) - when I have previously seen it or bought it 2x-3x+ that amount on United when there was no competition = understandable...

Another UAX route stolen by Southwest...not necessarily bad, and Allegiant is increasing operations seasonally in May, going from 2 to 4 weekly flights CLE-SAV and from 2 to 3 weekly for CLE-PIE and CLE-AUS.

No surprise on the Milwaukee route being axed; it was only a matter of time.  I would expect Boston to go away next.  I think UA may keep the leisure routes, though.

Good news on the Savannah flight additions.  That area (including Charleston) is great to visit in the colder months, but painfully difficult & expensive to get to from Cleveland for a shorter trip.

As consistently terrible as United's service is, I still hate to see us lose multi-airline routes.  Need the competition to keep prices reasonable.

After SWA pushed United to drop CLE-STL, their fares are still in the $100-$300 range. It’s worse on the routes where a budget airline cuts a route, leaving the legacy carrier (American, I’m looking at you) free to overprice

I agree, AA is the worst when it comes to that.  Their DFW-CLE route is a great example, and they're not really trying to compete with Spirit on it, either.

Definitely, and since Frontier cut CLT and PHL, American’s prices are ridiculous—often $500 to $600—to their nearby hubs from CLE (Other than Chicago, which has healthy competition from United and Southwest).

Amen. I go to philly and Charlotte frequently and loved the fares on those routes with frontier.  American did come down a couple hundred, butnwith frontier gone hey are right back up.

As far as Milwaukee, I know competition is good...but as long as we have the route, I don’t really care. There is an emotional connection still around with United, and the news comes off like it’s bad.  But if someone told me a year ago southwest and their big planes would replace United and it’s 50 seater to Milwaukee, I’d take it.

American's prices to Philly are insane, even with 5 daily weekday flights.  I assume it's mostly business travelers, but for a 1-hour flight I have never seen prices lower than $550 round-trip, and they are almost always $700+ in my experience.

That’s terrible. I’d certainly choose driving vs. that cost.

I have a severe hangover from last years  CLE-SAN prices. Flights are really expensive now.

More expansion by United... :-\  #stillafocuscity

Starting June 1st:

A second daily flight from LAX and from SFO, both red eyes, in addition to their existing evening arrivals from Los Angeles and San Francisco. Frontier and Spirit already fly redeyes from LAS and LAX, respectively.

Starting in November:

United increases service to Houston (IAH) from 5x daily to 6x daily while adding a second Saturday flight to MCO.

The CLE-->MCO route will be mainline for all flights.

CLE-->IAH will be 3 mainline 737's, 2 ERJ175's (76 seat two-class), and one ERJ145.

Basically, UA ramping up their "hub scoop" operations as they continue to draw down their destination portfolio from CLE.  So, they'll still get you there, just with a connection or two now.

As of now, United operates 4 E145XRs and a mainline 737. About 330-360 daily seats. With that expansion we would see a number around 492-582 seats per day. Pretty healthy growth! I’m guessing the 6th flight would be a 10:00 am arrival.

Big fan of the additional red eyes.  As long as United continues to connect us to West Coast, i dont really care what else they do at Hopkins

Absolutely! Don't forget that we are only 6 days from two more Frontier red eyes from SEA and PDX, some of Cleveland's most underserved markets...Despite seasonal service from Frontier to the Pacific Northwest, Alaska or Delta to SEA year-round is what we've really been waiting for!

Here's a recent shot of an American A319 from CLT reflecting the runway markings...this route has been seeing more upgrades to A320s and even the occasional A321 recently. Update: The 10pm arrival from CLT is being operated on only their 150-seat A320 for the foreseeable future (versus their 128-seat A319).

AA has also upgraded their service between CLE and PHL to E190's and E175's.  It used to be mostly E145's with an occasional E175 tossed in.  They still consider the E190 a "mainline" aircraft, albeit a small one.

Icelandair confirms (via Twitter) that the CLE flights "will most likely be served by both 757s and 767s"...

I know this was a while ago but they confirmed that it will be primarily 737MAX with occasional 757 or even 767s, likely during the winter schedule which is already including 757s.

Airport officials outline improvements

Short term, Cleveland airports director Robert Kennedy told transportation committee members, the growth in passenger traffic is straining the airport's roadways, parking lots and other facilities. Changes to those facilities likely would require moving existing underground utilities disturbed by above-ground changes. The airport handled 8.4 million passengers in 2016 and 9.1 million in 2017. Kennedy said he is forecasting 9.6 million in 2018.

"Our facilities will not take that," he told the committee. "That creates a challenge for us."

Long term, Kennedy said he wants to spend between $4 million and $4.5 million on a new master plan to see how to better use space at the land-locked, 2,000-acre airfield.

It seems more is spent on master plans than actual construction these days.  :P Not really, but you know what I mean. It also seems like the last master plan failed somewhat. Who could see United pulling out it's hub, then the Hub being back-filled by added service from airlines? I'm not arguing there is no need for plans, but maybe these plans can be more flexible so cash strapped facilities like CLE can adjust to the ebbs and flows of the business cycle, changing leisure demand and other outside forces that put pressure on the facilities.
