Probably headed to the Clinic.  I think I've heard of him coming to the Clinic before.

Wow....  Wouldn't it be nice if we had regular service with these here! I'd love to take a Non-stop to Europe/Hawaii via one...or further. Hate Chicago O'Hare where I swear you land in Wisconsin..and then taxi all the way to the terminal. Inside is another issue...

Does anyone know about the latest regs. on bringing BEER/Alcohol aboard the airlines these days? A few years ago, I was able to bring some G.L. beer on board the plane en-route all the way to Sydney, Australia. That was in '06...Then, later that year, I was able to wrap it up well and send it on luggage I was not going to carry on plane...all went well...Then, my friend could not bring it back on the plane as carry on, or as check-in luggage in '07.... I was there again in '08 and it was a no no...  How about now? It is so hard to get a hold of anyone at the airport who is is on the same page. I have no luck. Anyone know anything about this? Good information is appreciated... or is there a number to call to get instant information for things like this these days?

Anyone who helps gets a free 6 pack of some great Aussie beer when I return!  :drunk:

Well, you definitely can't bring it as a carry-on seeing as that is way more than what will fit in a quart-size bag.  You shouldn't have a problem being able to check it, though.

nope, i had beer in my checked bags flying both to and from CLE this new year.

Good news on CLE pax numbers:

"December was the first month in 2009, and the first time since August 2008, where passenger numbers at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) exceeded passenger levels of the same month from the preceding year, another sign that the recession is easing as the Cleveland and national economies are recovering. The data include both domestic and international passengers. The increase was small— 0.05% —but it was positive, and the latest data point in a generally steady increase from a low of -20% in May 2009 (year over year)...."

Does anyone know what is the actual monthly passenger count?

OUR VIEW: Outage at Hopkins symptom of bigger issues

January 18, 2010

The closing of Cleveland Hopkins Airport last week because of a power outage caused by a utility pole fire may be easy to explain, but it does precious little for the image of Cleveland and, for that matter, Northeastern Ohio, whose epicenter is Cleveland.

It puts Hopkins, which this area depends on for air cargo and passenger service, on shaky grounds. Apparently there was no backup source that would have enabled the airport to remain open.

If the Cuyahoga River's fire more than three decades ago awakened Northeastern Ohio to the need to do better when it comes to pollution, the shutdown at Hopkins should awaken the region to the fact that we lack a modern, well planned airport, the kind that most progressive regions have enjoyed for years.

well that report is partially wrong with regard to pittsburgh.  and if those cities want a progressive and more enticing airport in this economy....then pony up money to help rebuild.  Give us money to take over land, bury 480, add an extra runway and build a brand spanking new terminal!

Does anyone know what is the actual monthly passenger count?

Before we think about a new terminal...can we get right cleaning the restrooms and basic maintenance---and maybe hiring help that actually has some enthusiasm for Cleveland and sharing their city with travelers? (as I left for my trip a few weeks ago, the restrooms were really slack and the help was with the usual numb and unaware personality)

Such does not require a mega budget to do these basics, and if they cannot be made right first, I would not lend anyone money who could not first demonstrate the ability to crawl before they can walk.

I think some innmmediate "progress" for image is to get rid of the stinking carpet in the cooridoors....and let the facility hallways be tile (as it is underneath.) Easier to maintain, cleaner, healthier, and looks nicer and will make the coridoors look larger.

We could have a new terminal RIGHT NOW, but if it is occupied by any, if any existing workforce slacker philosophy on minor issues that add up to be big ones--- then it would only be a matter of time before the new terminal looks like crap and serves up another bad image. Remember, the airport is where many will get the first impression of your city. You can be smaller, but demonstrate much high quality to be impressive.

Here's an idea... remove the IX Center, use that land for some expansion, and bring the Home and Garden Show back downtown where it belongs!

Didn't the Home & Garden show move to Euclid anyway?

I'm with you on all other comments.  I've complained directly to the airport many times about the overall lack of cleanliness and employee attitudes.  I distinctly remember the girls working the food court bagel and Burger King being extremely rude.  As if eating that junk isn't enough punishment....

Since BK is no longer there......

the airport employees are yet another example of the terrible impression we make on outsiders because of the lack of enthusiasm, professionalism and good attitudes of the people who work at lower level jobs in public-facing businesses such as the airport and hotels.  As an event planner, I talk online with a lot of other event planners and we all have the same complaints about lower level staff at places like the airport, cab drivers (many of whom barely speak English, and nobody takes credit cards? Come on!) and hotel staff.  Lethargic, rude, inefficient and no pride in themselves or their jobs.  You know who's great to interact with at our airport?  The park and fly staff...who interact with CLEVELANDERS, not out of towners.  They're nice, cheerful, have good customer service skills, are friendly, go the extra mile, etc.

As I told the manager of the large hotel where we had our partner meeting this past fall, there are a lot of people in other states that would be happy to move here and have jobs working in catering or whatever, maybe you should get rid of all the underperforming people and hire in from other areas.

Yeah in DC, good luck finding anyone thats speaks any english.

"many of whom barely speak English"

Okay, lots of legit complaints but ^that is HARDLY limited to Cleveland.

True, but at least they take credit cards.

perhaps they will add credit cards like RTA has recently done, but place the machines underneath the passenger seat so you have to bend down to the floor to use them... also like RTA has done  ;)

LOL.  I wouldn't touch anything on the floor of a cab.  Maybe we could just ride the taxi cabs on the "honor system" and then we won't have to pay most of the time?

This self-deprecating attitude pervades almost every aspect of NEO. Too many times have I seen instances where people around here act indifferent because they believe “this is Cleveland...why should I care." I wish there was way to encourage people to be more professional and courteous, especially when they're dealing with people from out of town.

I don't think they don't care because it's Cleveland, they don't care because they think the world owes them some great job, and since they don't have it, they're not going to put a lot of effort into it. There's no pride in what they're doing.

That does seem to be a problem, but that's more of a societal issue. In my opinion, when a I travel I feel like people in other regions seem to have a little more pride in where there are from/live. This seems to translate into more friendly people at the airports and hotels. This is not true across the board because there are rude people everywhere. Perception is everything.

^You must not travel to Boston alot.

Here's an idea... remove the IX Center, use that land for some expansion, and bring the Home and Garden Show back downtown where it belongs!

I always thought the opposite about the IX Center. How about tearing down the existing terminal and surrounding facilities and turn the IX Center into one kickass worldclass terminal. You could have almost everything under one roof. I would like to an see an architect go crazy with all of that space. One big space with multiple moving sidewalks taking you to your gate, luggage, ticket counter, restaurant etc. And a ferris wheel in the middle. And the IX has a basement for parking!

The IX center should be a soundstage.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport could become a magnet for development

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Urban planners are taking a fresh look at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport as a magnet for development much like the region's highways or the banks of the Cuyahoga River.

The airport, surrounding land and transit routes could be stitched into an "aerotropolis" -- with the airport itself functioning as a central business zone, and commercial and manufacturing companies, typically aviation-related, strung along corridors radiating out as far as 20 miles.

Continental Airlines brings back nonstops to Green Bay and Norfolk

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Continental Airlines is restoring daily nonstop service from Cleveland to Green Bay, Wis., and Norfolk, Va., two destinations it cut after fuel prices soared in the summer of 2008.

The flights begin May 2. Departures to each city will be once or twice a day, in the afternoon and evening. Return flights will leave Green Bay and Norfolk both in the morning and afternoon.

http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/01/continental_airlines_brings_ba.html

Now bring back that non-stop to Austin and my wife's family will be very happy. Good to hear that we're picking back up some of those lost non-stops.

Good to see some flights being restored.  With new management it will be interesting to see in the next few months what kind of announcements come from IAH with regard to CLE.  I think we'll know by summer how committed or not CAL is to CLE.

They're still cutting other flights though.  I was booked on the evening flight to St. Louis for a week in May, and they sent me an e-mail this week saying they had changed me to a different flight (gee, thanks for asking if it was okay first!).  A quick check of the website showed the late flight is now totally gone :(.

True, CO cut one frequency per day from STL. Here are the latest CO changes. All take effect in May and have no end date.

Average daily frequencies---currently and new, effective May until further notice:

CLE-ABE 3>0

CLE-DFW 4>3

CLE-GRB 0>2

CLE-ORF 0>2

CLE-STL 3>2

Regarding customer service/attitude issues in airport. I want to expand a bit on what a few posters posted.

Both Rock and Roller and Sirgees have made excellent points. The N.E. O. inferiority complex has been so engrained into the attitude of many that I would bet they don't even know WHY they have this attitude...they simply repeat it like parrots because they heard from their parents/friends/or whomever.......and the beat goes on to the next person and so on... The lack of personal pride in jobs like front desk/customer service related positions clearly demonstrate the attitude. When you get good service, it is obvious when you are dealing with slack. Indeed, as Rock and roller pointed out.....it does nothing for image.

But how does it change? I don't think there is any one simplistic answer as it will take a combination of better customer service skills, and or a crash course on "Why to be proud of, and share Cleveland/N.E. Ohio with others" Naturally, it will take time to reverse these attitudes but I started--and maybe others can do the same--instead of reserving all the good ideas for UO---sart by writing to the airport to hire more willing and capable and articulate help. The slacker and inferiority attitudes need to change from the top on down before any grandiose ideas manifest with expansion, etc. By the way...the expansion mentioned in the article has me concerned about creating sprawl and undermining one of Cleveland's most treasured assets, our Metroparks.

Anyway, I would trade all the quantity for QUALITY any day if we could first see a change of attitude in the kinds of people we're talking about...that can lead to making us the best we can be AS is, FIRST---or we employ them over the kind who act like the world owes them a living---or that they are doing YOU a favor just by being awake! Here is one basic rule-of-thumb example of such customer service that is eroding away, or already is:  It should be the worker who says "THANK YOU" first, to a good customer...instead of the customer saying it, then the worker saying something like "yeah, ok" with a dopey careless chip-on-the-shoulder attitude. Another, emplyees in uniform smoking in the public eye.. Or shouting to one another across hallways or rooms. Real classy!  Does anyone step outside the box to look at that from the outside in to see how backwards it is? Or, are we so used to accepting below average standards that when we get back to average, we think it is a language from Mars? Don't know, but I will say again that it will be improving the simpe things that will be very important. So what.. Big airport, lost of development...same old bad maintenance, customer service, etc. The only difference is that we will just become a BIGGER bad example of slack. It all boils down to leadership better examples that trickle down to, and set better more efficient standards for employees.

When I ask a question about a city I am traveling to at a service desk, I don't want to be met with "Duhhhhh...I dunno!" Or the classic when someone comes to Cleveland from far away.....and the local says to the ousider... "Eweee!...Why did you come heeerrreee" Civic pride can do a lot in stimulating an attitude for a city that fosters the kind of caring that will not allow their city to be dragged down to the kinds of levels that people like some of the Cleveland Dot Com forums end up bitching about, and yet do nothing.

As for the flights. I really wish we'd get more non-stops like to the west coast, Hawaii, international, if somehow possible. I'm over the Chicago or Atlanta stops and having to fly on what are essentially 98' chamber pots or sardine cans! I am willing to pay more. I hope airport officials read this thread as RTA officials read the RTA thread.

I think we'll know by summer how committed or not CAL is to CLE.

MD: What makes you say that?

I think we'll know by summer how committed or not CAL is to CLE.

MD: What makes you say that?

Actions speak louder than words.

For instance, the old flight numbers that CAL used for CLE-LHR (66/67) have been assigned to EWR-SNN... Also, CAL is going to add a FOURTH EWR-LHR (using a B757) rather than adding a CLE-LHR.

^ Well, they basically told us we were transatlantic "toast," when they announced that there would be no London nonstop in 2010 from CLE and really nothing else for the foreseeable future, except possibly FRA one day, if Jupiter aligns with Mars and pigs fly etc.  I noticed a rather gloomy article about the CLE-CAL relationship on Wikipedia, and I noticed more doom and gloom on another web forum related to civil aviation.  Anyway, it seems like they are just tweaking and are in a holding pattern right now, so I will take your advice and wait until summer.  They must get better bang for the buck at EWR.  I really need to understand the economics better.  (I kind of remember reading that they closed a flight attendant base here or something.  Is that true?)

I have always flown Continental whenever I could.  Primarily to support the local company and their direct flights.  I guess I took them for granted.  I recently had to travel across the country on business, via three different airlines -- Continental was clearly the cream of the crop.  Thank you, thank you Continental!  Without Continental's amazing service, I would never want to fly again.

Great Lakes Brewing Company Opens the Tap at the AIRMALL® at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport

CLEVELAND, Feb. 1  /PRNewswire/ -- The AIRMALL® at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) is pleased to announce the opening of Great Lakes Brewing Company, a Cleveland original and brewer of award-winning lagers, ales and porters.

Operated by Cleveland Partners, LLC, the Great Lakes Brewing Company (approximately 3,000 sq. ft.) is located on Concourse C and includes a full-service restaurant and bar. In addition to a great selection of locally-brewed ales and lagers, travelers are able to choose from the restaurant's full menu of appetizers, pub favorites, sandwiches and dinner selections.

"We are excited to be a part of the ongoing concessions development at the AIRMALL® at CLE by providing travelers from all over the world with an authentic taste of Cleveland," added George Walker, operator of Great Lakes Brewing Company at the AIRMALL®. "Our award-winning, flavorful beers and mouth-watering food selections will surely be a big hit among passengers, all while providing uncompromising, superior customer service."

that's great. One thing we need at Hopkins is a bar on the non-secure side of the airport, so you can see someone off with a meal or drink before their flight, like you can at almost every other airport in the world.

An emphasis on "CUSTOMER SERVICE!"  Such a refreshing thing to hear someone acknowledge that! Now, I hope their help is instructed better than to reply to a traveler with whom they may be conversing about being in Cleveland, with the typical.. "Ohh why did you come heerrreee?" (said in the nasaly tone)

On the flights subject. I cannot understand why (or the justification) a region with such a high population as ours--with CLE serving the region---is not offered more direct flights both domestically and abroad. I'm frustrated with having getting somewhere via N.Y. Chi, and ATL rammed down our throats and us settling and scrapping for the scraps we're thrown. UGH!  %^%&$%&!!!)(***!! Sorry, just really annoyed by that scenario.  :x

The BIG reason is because of the "fortress" hub CAL has at EWR.  Unfortunately, CAL is not really big enough to support three full hubs.  While CLE is a true hub with banks of conneting flights, it can also be argued that it's really one airline in effect cornering the local market.  There's a lot of truth to that.  CLE's ratio of O&D to connection is like 70/30.  At most hubs it's the opposite.

CAL has an economy of scale at EWR that few can match.  Plus, and this is the real driver, EWR has a vast supply of premium first class and full fare coach fares that CLE does not.  I guarantee you that if CLE - LHR/CDG/FRA/TLV, etc were supported by O&D premium fares, then CAL would be greatly expanding transatlantic from CLE.

Favorite Expansion by far!  :-D

"But how does it change?"

JMO, but I think it would behoove us to bring in out of towners/out of state folks for these jobs.  I doubt there's much that could be done to "motivate" or change the attitudes of those who are already implanted in these jobs and who don't care about them, but if we brought out of town talent in, they'd a) be looking at CLE with fresh eyes, a positive perspective, and not be jaded like those who live here b) we'd be increasing our population, which is a good thing and c) we'd be making the market more competitive for jobs, which means people would have to realize they need to start stepping up their game if they want to be considered, not just hired "by default" because there is nobody else applying.
