Who could see United pulling out it's hub, then the Hub being back-filled by added service from airlines? I'm not arguing there is no need for plans, but maybe these plans can be more flexible so cash strapped facilities like CLE can adjust to the ebbs and flows of the business cycle, changing leisure demand and other outside forces that put pressure on the facilities. There are many arguments for why the City of Cleveland should not be running airports. This is one of them. They aren't known for their visionary planning.

April 19, 20187 yr The airport clearly needs more parking. Almost everyone using it is now either arriving or departing from Cleveland. It's not complex. I'm hoping the money is being used to find a feasible site but who knows. The city tore down the long-term garage as United walked. The other idea is to accommodate additional mass transit within the terminal. Not quite sure how it would be done. Of course the "new" master plan will only last as long as Kennedy is there. Once he walks there will be a new administrator with another idea. One step forward, two steps back.

Taken in more context, the airport hasn't accommodated as much O/D as they've had in recent years... they handled the connecting traffic which often did not need parking or other services outside the airport. When I was kid, it seemed like there was a ton of parking and it was never full (but I was a dumb kid)... it certainly seems like there has been a reduction in space availability.

April 19, 20187 yr The airport is certainly busier within the last year and often if you arrive in the afternoon all parking is full. The garage fills quickly and if you are lucky enough to get in you are on the top floor. They have got to come up with a better solution.

Most other airports had a glut of parking even way before ride-sharing, CLE is currently not in this situation especially after the long-term garage was torn down. They can jack rates up but they have to be careful with CAK being in the region. CPE is lower there and if the passenger experience becomes substantially better at CAK, the ULCCs could move. It's threading the needle.

April 26, 20187 yr Changes Coming to Ease International Travel at Hopkins by Nancy Kelsey Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) is changing the process for international travelers arriving in Cleveland. The previous process, which has been a sore spot for some passengers, included waiting for all passengers to finish being checked by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) before getting on a shuttle that drops them off at the baggage claim level. Now, passengers will be free to leave the customs area as soon as they are finished with CBP, however they will be subject to reverse screening by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) before entering Concourse A at CLE. The first day for the new process will be April 30, 2018 with United’s flight from Cozumel, Mexico. With the addition of new transatlantic service in May 2018 this new process will allow for more efficient processing through customs. It is important for passengers to know that they will be screened by TSA similar to when they arrive at an airport. That means passengers who may have purchased duty-free beverages will need to put those items into their checked luggage before leaving the customs area as they will not be allowed to take liquids over 3 ounces into the terminal. These changes will apply to all international arrivals which currently include scheduled flights from Cancun, Mexico on Frontier and United, charters from Montego Bay, Jamaica and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic as well as new service from Reykjavik, Iceland on WOW air and Icelandair that begin in May 2018. https://wp.me/p3ipG9-3ck

Wow I didn't realize I had a hater! I'm actually quite positive at most things on here--but running an airport is not something I think the City of Cleveland should be engaging in. From lots of posts in this thread, I have seen there are others that agree with me. Maybe I'm reading this wrong as to how it's going to work at Hopkins, but it sounds like pax will clear FCIS, then have to go through TSA to walk through the A Concourse to get to bag claim? That is NOT how it's done at any major airport that I've entered via.

May 4, 20187 yr ^The interesting thing to me in the PD's report was the motives of the downstate folks who drove to CLE for the flight to Iceland. It seems that CLE and CVG, both of which will have bargain-fare Iceland flights, may well split the Columbus international bargain market in half, effectively adding a million people to each catchment. That would make CLE a 5-million person market and it may well mean that the market *IS* big enough for both Wow and Icelandair to survive, and perhaps the third carrier that airport-boss Kennedy has hinted at, as well. It may have only been half full, but as we know, CLE is under-advertised, and as of now not may Europeans are looking for cheap fares to CLE. But WOW Air is working on comprehensive travel guides for their destinations throughout this summer. Destination Cleveland is promoting Cleveland as a global...well, destination! And there were [at least] several European travel writers onboard in Cleveland right now. Additionally, the route is likely going to attract mainly NE Ohioans looking for cheap vacations. Their schedule (Sun.Mon.Tue.Wed.Fri.) and service level (Saga Class, analogous to premium economy) supports business flying better than Wow's and is supposed to run year round with one fewer flights per week in Feb. and Mar.
