It seems more is spent on master plans than actual construction these days.  :P Not really, but you know what I mean. It also seems like the last master plan failed somewhat. Who could see United pulling out it's hub, then the Hub being back-filled by added service from airlines? I'm not arguing there is no need for plans, but maybe these plans can be more flexible so cash strapped facilities like CLE can adjust to the ebbs and flows of the business cycle, changing leisure demand and other outside forces that put pressure on the facilities.

There are many arguments for why the City of Cleveland should not be running airports.  This is one of them.  They aren't known for their visionary planning.

  "Our facilities will not take that," he told the committee. "That creates a challenge for us."

The airport accommodated far more than that before the recession. Maybe they shouldn't have torn down the long term garage.

The airport clearly needs more parking. Almost everyone using it is now either arriving or departing from Cleveland. It's not complex.

I'm hoping the money is being used to find a feasible site but who knows. The city tore down the long-term garage as United walked.

The other idea is to accommodate additional mass transit within the terminal. Not quite sure how it would be done.

Of course the "new" master plan will only last as long as Kennedy is there. Once he walks there will be a new administrator with another idea. One step forward, two steps back.

Taken in more context, the airport hasn't accommodated as much O/D as they've had in recent years... they handled the connecting traffic which often did not need parking or other services outside the airport.

When I was kid, it seemed like there was a ton of parking and it was never full (but I was a dumb kid)... it certainly seems like there has been a reduction in space availability.

Cleveland Hopkins airport sees 9.9 percent passenger growth during first quarter of 2018

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Passenger traffic at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport increased 9.9 percent during the first quarter of 2018, continuing a trend of substantial growth over the past several years.

The airport welcomed 2.1 million travelers during the first three months of the year, compared to 1.9 million during the same period in 2017. Of those 2.1 million passengers, nearly all of them - 97 percent - started or ended their travel in Northeast Ohio

The airport is certainly busier within the last year and often if you arrive in the afternoon all parking is full.  The garage fills quickly and if you are lucky enough to get in you are on the top floor.  They have got to come up with a better solution.

The near term solution is pretty obvious: jack up prices to ensure availability. Those who don't want to pay up can switch to the off-site lots or use transit or ride-hailing services.  Longer term, it's not clear what the city should do. There's apparently angst at other airports about the decline in parking demand  (and  revenue)  as more people switch to ride hailing instead of warehousing their idle car in expensive airport parking for several days.

Most other airports had a glut of parking even way before ride-sharing, CLE is currently not in this situation especially after the long-term garage was torn down.

They can jack rates up but they have to be careful with CAK being in the region. CPE is lower there and if the passenger experience becomes substantially better at CAK, the ULCCs could move. It's threading the needle.

How's business on the lots along Snow Road? Are they at capacity?  I haven't used one of those (since I've been avoiding flying) since last year.

Could you please explain the abbreviations CPE and ULCC? Thanks

I believe it's Cost Per Enplaned (CPE) and Ultra Low Cost Carrier (ULCC)

Changes Coming to Ease International Travel at Hopkins

by Nancy Kelsey

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) is changing the process for international travelers arriving in Cleveland.

The previous process, which has been a sore spot for some passengers, included waiting for all passengers to finish being checked by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) before getting on a shuttle that drops them off at the baggage claim level.

Now, passengers will be free to leave the customs area as soon as they are finished with CBP, however they will be subject to reverse screening by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) before entering Concourse A at CLE.

The first day for the new process will be April 30, 2018 with United’s flight from Cozumel, Mexico.

With the addition of new transatlantic service in May 2018 this new process will allow for more efficient processing through customs.

It is important for passengers to know that they will be screened by TSA similar to when they arrive at an airport. That means passengers who may have purchased duty-free beverages will need to put those items into their checked luggage before leaving the customs area as they will not be allowed to take liquids over 3 ounces into the terminal.

These changes will apply to all international arrivals which currently include scheduled flights from Cancun, Mexico on Frontier and United, charters from Montego Bay, Jamaica and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic as well as new service from Reykjavik, Iceland on WOW air and Icelandair that begin in May 2018.

Sounds like the TSA is trying to up their employment rolls at CLE, plus provide some free alcohol courtesy of unsuspecting passengers.  What an absolutely stupid setup--way worse than taking a shuttle to bag claim!

That is how it was done in Atlanta, when I flew back from London

Yep. This was my experience at ATL when coming back from the Caribbean.

I leave and enter the country frequently. This is how it is at all major entry point airports.

My hovercraft is full of eels

What’s so stupid about this process? Sounds like you’re complaining just to complain, as usual.

As usual?  Wow I didn't realize I had a hater!  I'm actually quite positive at most things on here--but running an airport is not something I think the City of Cleveland should be engaging in.  From lots of posts in this thread, I have seen there are others that agree with me.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong as to how it's going to work at Hopkins, but it sounds like pax will clear FCIS, then have to go through TSA to walk through the A Concourse to get to bag claim?  That is NOT how it's done at any major airport that I've entered via.

Cleveland air travel enters the Iceland age; Wow Air launches this week, Icelandair to follow

~~~
CLEVELAND, Ohio - It's been nearly 10 years since a commercial passenger airline last flew across the Atlantic Ocean to and from Cleveland.
That changes this week, as air travel in Northeast Ohio enters the Iceland age, with two Reykjavik-based airlines set to start service from Cleveland.
First up is Wow Air , with its signature bright purple airplanes and super-low fares, due to land in Cleveland for the first time at 11:30 p.m. Thursday. It will turn around and fly its maiden voyage from Cleveland Hopkins an hour later, departing at 12:30 a.m. Friday.
Less than two weeks later, on May 16, Icelandair launches service from Cleveland, with five flights per week to Keflavik International Airport, about 30 miles west of Reykjavik.
~~~

Frequent flyer Ingrida Bublys, president of Cleveland's International Business Network, is among those who are eager to connect through Reykjavik instead. "I think it will be more enjoyable, more relaxed," she said, noting that going through Cleveland's recently renovated U.S. Customs facility should be far less stressful than the bigger airports.

Her organization recently invited executives from Icelandair to make a pitch to local business leaders with European ties, an event that filled the ballroom at the Embassy Suites hotel in Independence last week. Bublys encouraged the crowd: "Everyone in this room should try Icelandair at some point."....

When was Cleveland's last transatlantic flight and where did it go to?

Yes it was a 2 class service 757 1x daily to Gatwick.

I don't recall when it ended but it started more than 10 years ago.  I took it pre 9/11

London Heathrow and Paris were at CLE for a hot minute.

Cleveland had London Gatwick service for several years.

Tonight is the inaugural arrival and departure of CLE's Iceland service.

He would have to use CLE--I don't think they could land AF1 at BKL unless it was some sort of crazy national emergency.  Runway is not long enough and can't support weight.

They have, in the past, landed at CLE and boarded Marine 1 for the quick trip to BKL.

Minor factoid: AF1 is not a 747; it is whatever plane the President is using.  Sometimes a 757 is used, which could land at BKL.

Yes very true--but I thought since 9/11 they always want POTUSA on the 747 due to advanced communication and defensive equipment?

Dunno about that. I do know that Obama used the 757 quite a bit.

Then if that's the case, I think he may be going in to BKL this weekend.

Obama flew a 757 "Air Force One" into Burke at least once... for campaigning, if I recall. Rolled right up to a press conference area.

Yes. Any service carrying the president is labeled "1" so AF1, Marine 1, Army 1, etc.

The WOW Air inaugural just arrived. They had a nice water cannon salute as it taxied to its gate. Here’s to CLE’s next chapter of expansion!

Good thing, then, that it was only half full.

^The interesting thing to me in the PD's report was the motives of the downstate folks who drove to CLE for the flight to Iceland. It seems that CLE and CVG, both of which will have bargain-fare Iceland flights, may well split the Columbus international bargain market in half, effectively adding a million people to each catchment.  That would make CLE a 5-million person market and it may well mean that the market *IS* big enough for both Wow and Icelandair to survive, and perhaps the third carrier that airport-boss Kennedy has hinted at, as well.

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

Good thing, then, that it was only half full.

It may have only been half full, but as we know, CLE is under-advertised, and as of now not may Europeans are looking for cheap fares to CLE. But WOW Air is working on comprehensive travel guides for their destinations throughout this summer. Destination Cleveland is promoting Cleveland as a global...well, destination! And there were [at least] several European travel writers onboard in Cleveland right now. Additionally, the route is likely going to attract mainly NE Ohioans looking for cheap vacations. Inbound flights will start filling up as more and more travelers return from their European travels.

Oh, and 196 passengers the first outbound flight! Now that's a route you wouldn't want to be kicked off when it's overbooked...although you may be able to get upgraded to Icelandair...

^I'm not certain that all 196 were paying passengers---some may well have been free tickets, promotional, etc.  Wow had to have a nearly full flight. It would be bad press otherwise.

Good point. I’m sure they did. But nevertheless, there will be high LF’s mostly on outbound flights.

  • 2 weeks later...

Icelandair's inaugural flight is tonight.  Their schedule (Sun.Mon.Tue.Wed.Fri.) and service level (Saga Class, analogous to premium economy) supports business flying better than Wow's and is supposed to run year round with one fewer flights per week in Feb. and Mar. Wow, I believe, is seasonal, operating about six months of the year.

Frontier Airlines adds limited, nonstop service between Cleveland and San Antonio; introductory fare is $59 one way

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Frontier Airlines is adding limited, nonstop service between Cleveland and San Antonio, Texas, starting in August.

It will be the 14th destination for Frontier, which has added and subtracted numerous routes from Cleveland Hopkins in recent years, trying to figure out what works at the airport in the wake of United Airlines' cutbacks in Cleveland since 2014.
