It seems silly of them to cancel it now after reaffirming the route would return at 4 days-per-week...especially after consolidating with WOW (aka no direct competition). But then again maybe they didn’t like their ticket sale numbers?

The Merger with WOW never went through and WOW is now having its planes repossessed!

Just goes to show you that you can't believe what these corporate spokes people say unfortunately. It's like when a major corporation says they are committed to an area, then layoff hundreds of people months later.

There was a place named Cantina or Cantina del Rio or something like that on the West Bank of the Flats.  Sample people or just a well-liked name?

I'm going to presume it's the one based in New York.

Does this mean our region is making inroads to the world of blockchain?

If for some crazy reason they end up having to pay out this ransom, some loser in his mom's basement is going to have a lot of spare cash for cheetos and monster energy drinks.

Does anyone know how common it is for T50 airports to be operated by a city government vs. an independent entity?

What airport isn't operated by a city, a county or multi city/county government agency? ??‍♂️

London/Heathrow bought a company that runs several international airports  Most of those people being former Heathrow airport employees.  Since FAA rules are different, for discussion can we limit this to domestic airports?

Yeah well Cleveland Hopkins is run by political cronies, who escort the COO of the City (former water meter reader) through security, in violation of FAA rules.

Some American airports have leased their airports to private operators or are considering doing so. Cleveland could use its lease to substantially rebuild and expand RTA, then free up its capital budget for operations. The city could also contract out its on- and off-street parking to help support the operating cost of RTA's expanded services.

Not sure this is the best thread for this idea / possible discussion but here goes.

If I were the Haslams, and I wanted a new Browns stadium, I would try to package it as part of a larger, regional, infrastructure plan.

Namely, I would try to get a 7 county tax base (similar to Pittsburgh) to fund a new stadium, and a new international airport out in a county other than Cuyahoga.

Hopkins could still be open for low cost carriers and be the backup airport to this new airport.  This would allow Burke to be allowed to closed.

A new Stadium could be built on Burke property, opening up the current stadium location for development.

Throw in some sweeteners for the counties not getting anything.  Maybe use that money to move the port and have even more riverfront and lakefront development land.

I just wanted to pitch this idea and get some feedback, especially from people who know the airline industry.

So many issues here....

1.  Burke is all landfill.  Probably not impossible to build structures on, but certainly more expensive.

2.  Haslam would be dead and gone before the first truck of concrete was poured on such a regional airport.  Between the FAA, financing and the inevitable NIMBYs in Brunstucky or whatever farm community this things would go would tie it up for decades.

3.  CLE's O/D numbers are strong--but not enough to justify such a massive project especially in a region still losing population.    There is also plenty of room to expand on the current airport site (IX Center, Terminal D, etc)

4.  CLE is a great little airport that is horribly mismanaged by the City of Cleveland.   It's 12 miles from the CBD, which makes it a great asset vs some mega generic airport 40 miles outside town.

I will say for the landfill, the current stadium is built on the same landfill that makes up Burke.

Unless you want to build a mega-airport for the 7-million-population Cleveland-Akron-Canton-Youngstown-Pittsburgh region and link the principal cities with high-speed rail.

Announced earlier this month...

More flights for the summer season.  Would be nice if these flights were year-round but not sure whether or not these airlines can justify year-round service at this time.

Among the newest offerings:

  1. In May, Frontier Airlines started flying between Cleveland and Charleston, South Carolina, twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays. The seasonal route is scheduled through early November.
  2. Allegiant Air starts flying between Cleveland and Charleston on June 6, also on Thursdays and Sundays.
  3. Allegiant also is adding new service to Norfolk, Virginia, starting June 7. That route will run Fridays and Mondays. Cleveland hasn’t had nonstop service to Norfolk since 2008, when United Airlines offered the route. Both the Charleston and Norfolk routes are scheduled through mid-August

Frontier Airlines to restart service to Fort Lauderdale, Miami from Cleveland Hopkins; fares start at $49

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Frontier Airlines will restart nonstop service between Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and Fort Lauderdale and Miami, two routes it has flown before.

The routes start in October, with an introductory fare sale of $49 one way.

The new Miami service will run four times per week, on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Service to Fort Lauderdale will run three times per week, on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.

More here.

^that's okay. I still find any service that is less than daily--especially for a domestic route -- to be pretty annoying.

Speaking of MIA--and daily service--AA is upgauging its ERJ-145 planes with E-175s (much nicer) starting Sept 4th on CLE-MIA/MIA-CLE routes.

Yeah, those ERJ-145 "needlenose" planes are like overgrown Lear Jets without the creature comforts...speaking of...The ERJ-145s are cramped and you can feel every bump.

My brother is very happy about this.  When flying NON stop to MIA he hates those 145.  Being 6'6" it's not a comfortable ride.  He books so far in advance just to get seat 1A.

I can kinda see it. The small engines, no, but the slightly curved winglets and sleek nose (unique for RJs) actually do resemble the 787's prominent features.

Also a minor update regarding Icelandair: they've cut Halifax (back in March) and Tampa just last week due to the 737MAX grounding for the current season, which leads me to believe CLE has a higher chance of returning as soon as their fleet situation is resolved...

I'm 6'4" and frequent the United RJs.   I hate seat 1A though, because you have to put your bag in the overhead, which is 3 rows behind you.   18A on the United RJs is the one.  Exit row solo....easy living (other than the noise...and god forbid I have to use the toilet!)

This isn't a change in available seats, though.  3 daily E145's (50*3) goes to 2 daily E175's (76*2).  However, I wholeheartedly agree that this is an improvement.  I was very recently on this route and 3 hours is too long on an E145 (not to mention that the E175's are outfitted with wireless and the E145's are not, nor will they ever).

Not news but this is a good read from 2006 about the bombast surrounding the expansion of Hopkins. "What we're discussing here is 1,000 Browns deals," [Mike] White was quoted as saying. "What we're discussing here is 2,000 Gateway deals, in terms of economic importance. We must expand, or we will die."

Not sure he was telling the truth.

Probably to some extend because they are still paying for concourse D.

Their press release announcing the purchase of A321-XLR aircraft said  "Adding six new #A321XLR aircraft to our fleet from 2023 means new routes beyond the US East Coast."  This wouldn't rule out CLE service before that date using other aircraft; but it makes it sound less likely.

If I’m not mistaken, Hopkins was among UA’s several most profitable hubs, and UAL CEO Jeff Smisek’s resignation in 2015 was partially linked to the decision.
