If you are moving to Cleveland for a job, what industry is it in?

I have noticed alot of people looking for relocation advice in the Cleveland area, and I was wondering what was bringing you to Cleveland.  I may not get too many responses, but I would be nice to see what industries are attracting job seekers to the area.

^I left it on two options so you can put one for yourself and a spouse if it applies.

Good idea gotribe.

This will be very interesting to see once there are responses.

go tribe.  great thread.

I wonder if you could add a  "Law" category as Clevelands Law/Law related occupations is rather large.

How about architect/arts.  Cleveland had more arch jobs created in the last year than any other city in the country (pretty sure I read it on uo a couple months ago).

^I think you read monster.com had more architectural positions available in the Cleveland market then any other of their markets.

OK...newbies...lets us see why you moved to the roar on the shore....

Well at least the results have clearly pointed to specific field.

this poll pulled me out of lurking and got me to finally register... I've been checking this site for a couple months now, getting lots of great info from members. so thanks! my husband and I are moving to Cleveland starting this weekend. we're coming from the Detroit area.

Good lord, there are a stampede of folks from Detroit moving here.

-tina, welcome!  I think you'll be very happy in Cleveland. University Circle, is a great area.

Thanks for the hearty welcome! I have to say I can't think of anybody who really loves living around metro Detroit. It's just a depressing area and has been for a long time. I am a Mich native and was hoping to make a go of it in my home state, but opportunity knocks elsewhere. I'm going to be heading to law school at Case and my husband found a job pretty easily in Cleveland even though a lot of people said the market was bad. Guess it's all relative!

We're going to be living at Park Lane Villa, which is right on the edge of Univ Circle. I'm sure some of you are familiar with the project.  (http://www.parklanevilla.com) I love to see this kind of redevelopment and I'm thrilled that we are able to be in the first group of residents.

I'm glad to see the comment from MyTwoSense about the large law market. While we know we're in it for 3 years, we might just end up staying for good.

I have staff in Detroit and they pretty much say the same thing you said.  Many of them say they wish Detroit could turn around like Cleveland.  The job market in Cleveland is better than the media states.  Personally, I think those who are in dead end jobs, jobs they don't like or are unemployed are simply to lazy to look or are not prepared when it comes to researching/searching for a new job/career path.

Yes Medical, Insurance, Law, and the arts are big here in Cleveland.  Service jobs seem to be picking up as well.

How about communications....liked media/pr? I don't fit in those categories!

Oh lord.... I need to put on my glasses.   Holy mackerel!  -tina, I'm sooooooooo sorry sugar.

MayDay....Decaf??  How dare you!  Decaf is for p*****s! I'm a man!

You're in PR?  I knew there was a reason I like you!

Welcome to Cleveland, tina. A LOT of my family are from the metro Detroit area (24 Mile Rd., represent), and I think you'll find a lot of good things about Detroit are also present in Cleveland, although the two are obviously distinctly different cities. And I think your positioning at University Circle will allow you to see some major transformations in the next few years. Congrats!

Regarding our law sector, it is pretty strong. As an example, I believe Jones Day (an international firm founded and headquartered in Cleveland) now handles a larger amount of litigation work than any other firm in the world (in terms of volume; I was told they rank about 5th or 6th globally in terms of transaction dollars). And that's just one of many prominent firms locally.

At any rate, best of luck to you! Hope you fall in love with the Cleve! Let us all know if you guys need a tour or help getting your bearings.

Pretty, pretty please can we have an arts and culture category? With an estimated $200 million being distributed to the sector over the next 10 years, including a sizable chunk in general operating support by the close of 2007, I anticipate that we'll start seeing an in-migration of arts administrators and artists before too long.

8ShadesofGray, good point.  I pretty sure I read somewhere the Clevelands law community is second only to DC in terms of litigation and third behind LA and New York in entertainment law.

Welcome Tina! I just met a two other Detroiters who moved on over to Cleveland (Ohio City).

Of course, you could always put an "Other" category as a catch-all.

An overwhelming amount of the posts for relocation assistance that I have read on UO in the past year are from the healthcare industry, followed by college students. I would consider the rest as other.

I would guess that the healthcare demographic doesn't have time to respond to the poll.

Hi, we are considering moving to Cleveland (also considering Chicago), coming from Detroit.

I am looking for work doing research and planning for a neighborhood development group. My husband is an artist (paints pictures and does indoor murals for cafes). He also works as a parking cashier and hopes to get a job at a hospital or university as a parking cashier.

If we get jobs in Cleveland we will let you know. I have not had much luck applying long distance to Chicago so will try Cleveland. Then if we don't like something  up ahead of time, we may just move without jobs (scary) but we really want to leave Detroit (for reasons that are probably obvious to everyone).

This is  a great forum of  urban boosters and knowledgeable people.

Here's a good site to visit for jobs that are in, or close to your field, here in Northeast Ohio. I don't see any exact matches in there now, but you might a couple of them to be worth pursuing...

welcome tina, and great thread gotribe

Thank you KJB for the link. I had recently discovered the website for Green City Blue Lake and really like it.

I am looking for research, writing, project management type job for a neighborhood development group, or other organization involved in planning and policy.

I have experience as an analyst for city government, and working in retirement housing developments. Also I have a masters in social policy.

Last week, I called the Cleveland Foundation  and they suggested contacting Downtown Cleveland Alliance, Greater Cleveland Organization for Growth, Greater Cleveland Partnership. Are there any other suggestions from this board?

^ I would post this in your original relocation that you posted, maybe it will get more responses there.

Justine, I would also check out the Center for Community Solutions. Cleveland Neighborhood Development Coalition also puts out a monthly newsletter that includes job openings at the community development coalitions. You might also call St-Clair Superior Development Corporation ... very cool CDC on the near east side of town, lots of interesting activity and I know they've recently had a few people transitioning to other organizations.

As far as supports for a local artist, check out www.cpacbiz.org, which has a lot of helpful links, as well as an online community where you can sign up for e-mail updates about grant opportunities, calls for artists, professional development opportunities, etc.

Best of luck with the move if ya move!

Also check out the Cleveland Neighborhood Development Coalition's monthly newsletter:

The August issue (pp 2-3) has a couple job openings that might be right up your alley.

  • 1 month later...

Bump.
