Calling all college basketball fanatics and especially those that are CSU Alum or students.  Friday, February 27th at 10:00pm, the Men's Basketball team will take on Valparaiso at the Wolstein Center.  The winner of this game will host the Horizon League Tournament.  There are lots of special deals for this game, the best one being the 216 Hoopy Hour  ($2 food items, $1 drafts, $6 tickets - must be purchased in advance).

It's the BLACKOUT game.  First 1000 fans get a BLACKOUT t-shirt.  Wear black anyway or you can purchase black apparel at the Viking Outfitters Merchandise stand near Gate A.  Say you saw this post on Urban Ohio and you'll get 20% off any regular priced item.

If CSU wins this game, then the Horizon League Tournament would start Friday, March 6th at 7pm at the Wolstein Center.

Yes, 10 PM.  It's being shown live on ESPNU, so ESPN dictates when the game will start.

Since a Viking win would mean that CSU and Valpo split the season series and have identical conference records, what's the tie breaker for home court advantage in the conference tournament? Valpo has a better overall record--does that play into it at all?

If the Vikings win, then they would have an identical conference record with Valpo.  The next tie-breaker is record with common opponents.  CSU swept Green Bay.  Valpo split, so we would win that tie-breaker.  They wrinkle is that Oakland could end up with an identical won-loss record to CSU if they beat Green Bay.  Then the tie-breaker is RPI which right now CSU is ahead by a few points.

Overall record does not play into Horizon League Tournament seeding directly.  It does when you look at RPI, but that takes into account the strength or weakness of the opponent.

It was a great turnout Friday.  Tons of energy in the arena.  Unfortunately the Vikings didn't pull out the win.  Next stop is the Horizon League Tournament that will be held at Valparaiso.  They need to win the tournament to make the NCAA tourney.

extreme choke job.  Disappointing, they cannot host that tournament for the life of them.  I like Waters a lot, I really do.  He has our win total around 20 every year, pulls big upsets over major programs and competes against others tooth and nail.  But for whatever reason, his downfall is winning big games at home.  I have been to the biggest game of the year the last 5 years, including Friday night and sellouts vs Butler and other games that would get us the tournament at home...he cannot win that game, for whatever reason.

Bad couple years for Gary and the Vikes. Bryn Forbes hit 11..11!!! Threes last night for MSU. He got away two years ago and was a huge piece to their final four run. Then last year, Vikings had a shot to clinched hosting the horizon league tourney in Cleveland but choked at home to Valpo.  You can only imagine trey Lewis and Grady were sitting and watching Forbes.  So Lewis transfers to Louisville and is the second leading scorer there, and Grady goes to Wichita and is 3rd there.  Vikings could have been a legitimate mid major making a deep run this year....instead.....sigh

CSU hasn't been in this position for about 9 or 10 years now. Come cheer us on!

Tough loss--but many said they should have never made it that far.  Congrats CSU for a great showing!

Lol I opened that ESPN link and immediately saw the trash talk on how CSU should have never made it this far, and that the Horizon League tournament shouldn't be on a one game bid... Well obviously those teams CSU beat should have played better... Right? I mean they smashed NKU which was the favored team to make it all the way through. The amount of salty tweets I read from my hotel room was hilarious that night.

I'm in the pep band so I did plenty of traveling and cheering this past weekend. I literally just got home, but It was quite the rollercoaster ride. What a pleasure it is to be a part of a Cinderella team.

It would be nice if they got a little more media attention.

 Vikings win again!

Vikings keep on winning. They are now 9-0 in conference.

CSU has to cancel Duke and Kent State games due to covid. Apparently looked pretty good against Oklahoma State the other day.

I heard CSU would have gotten $90,000 from the game with Duke.

vikes win 5 in a row blowing out Oakland tonight by 25.  5-3 (1-0 in conference).

they're rounding out and are looking better each game so far.

Now they just need to get more fans to attend their games.

I follow them pretty closely - and it's wild to watch them pivot from losing to a D2 team, to ripping off 5 in a row against quality opponents

Do you know if they live stream their games on YouTube or anything?

I would think making it easy to watch would broaden their fan base pretty quickly.

The link is usually on their website when its available.

The problem is us, as Clevelanders.

The Vikes have had some very good teams in recent years. Ticket prices are affordable, the venue is easy to get to, and the product is good - we just don't show up.

I'd love for the new school design to include a 4,000 - 6,000 seat arena that's more intimate and a little easier for students to access (though Wolstein is a 5 minute walk from the 7,000 kids near campus). I think places like Wichita State and Creighton are achievable models for CSU. Small schools, formerly thought to be primarily commuter, with stellar programs that receive robust support.

The basketball talent in Northeast Ohio is there - as is the desire for a good college bball program, I'm just not sure why the two haven't clicked yet.

From my dad's stories about the 80s CSU teams, Woodling Gym was a REALLY tough place to play.

Just about every game is on ESPN's website. Maybe I can access them because I have an ESPN+ account?? They sync the video feed with the radio announcers (either CSU's or the opponent's).

yea it's on the radio, too. I think the Gambler or whatever.

I'm on my second year of season tickets. it's a fun program to follow. lol the hot dogs stink, tho

Some of their games also air on WTAM if no conflict with Cavs.

Pluto wrote about CSU and their recruiting efforts.  I think they'll be pretty good next year. you should consider season tickets.

Cleveland State basketball adds 5 players as program keeps looking up – Terry Pluto

ABOUT CSU’S ATHLETIC PROGRAM

1. When Garrett took over as Athletic Director on April 8, 2019, CSU’s basketball program was coming off a 10-21 season. It was their third consecutive 20-loss season.

2. In the last three seasons, CSU has had records of 19-8, 20-11 and 21-14. There have been two regular-season Horizon League titles, a trip to the NCAA, NIT and College Basketball Invitational. Before Garrett arrived, the Vikings averaged 996 fans per game. Garrett fired coach Dennis Felton and hired Gates. That began the turnaround. The Vikings averaged 1,890 fans, fifth best in the 11-team Horizon League in 2023. Garrett said nearly all of the season ticket holders have renewed. He’s set a goal of averaging 3,000 fans over the next few years.

3. The CSU athletes over all sports had a cumulative 3.47 GPA. The women’s team went to the NCAA tournament. The men’s soccer team won the Horizon League title. Men’s basketball and women’s tennis finished No. 2 in the Horizon League. Athletic department fund raising went from $436,000 the year before Garrett arrived to $1.2 million this year
