March 11, 200916 yr Go Vikings! They looked good in all 3 games against Butler, a legitimate top 25 team. I wouldn't hesitate to pick them to win a tournament game depending on the match-up. Now if OU can pull a miracle run in the MAC tournamanet I could have both alma-mater's in the dance!
March 11, 200916 yr How about a Quad with dorms and a campus feeling! It's not like that are doesn't need development.
March 11, 200916 yr Author How about a Quad with dorms and a campus feeling! It's not like that are doesn't need development. This is a sports thread.. if you want to talk about CSU develop, talk a walk up a couple of thread categories.
March 11, 200916 yr I already pretty much have both mine in :) CSU is in, UD is a lock. Now if only the Bucks can get in and make it out of the first round.
March 11, 200916 yr I already pretty much have both mine in :) CSU is in, UD is a lock. UD may still need to win their first A-10 game. I'm not convinced until I hear UD called on Sunday. Great win for CSU. Hopefully they'll be a 13 seed and pull off one of those upsets that we see every year!
March 11, 200916 yr I already pretty much have both mine in :) CSU is in, UD is a lock. Toledo just lost in a crazy game to Akron, plus they were awful all year. But I'm a CSU partisan above all. I'm also actively working toward getting CSU a football team. Any alumni who would like to help with that, let me know.
March 12, 200916 yr I would love to help with that. There will be serious growing pains, but its all about building a program, just ask Gary Waters
March 12, 200916 yr There would be no immediate expectations of winning any football games. But even a terrible program still gives people something to rally around in large throngs. Football fires people up in a way basketball doesn't, plus its season conincides with the beginning of the school year. CSU has moved strongly toward becoming a residential campus with competitive student life options. Football could be a huge part of that. Right now, all we're doing is building a base of support so we can let the incoming president know people really want it.
March 15, 200916 yr CSU is in. They play a very tough Wake Forest team. I loved the live feed of the CSU team surrounded by the tournament trophy. I'm not sure of their chances against WF, but wish them much luck. Another note, CSU and OSU have the potential to meet in the Regional Semi-Final.
March 16, 200916 yr I give CSU a pretty good chance against a young, sporadic WF team. I actually picked them as my 13 vs 4 upset.
March 16, 200916 yr I give CSU a pretty good chance against a young, sporadic WF team. I actually picked them as my 13 vs 4 upset. Well if they will, that will cause to throw one hell of a hootenany!
March 16, 200916 yr CSU plays good defense, so regardless I am not looking for a blowout here. if CSU happens to get by Wake...look for them to keep the run going with a win in the next round.
March 17, 200916 yr http://www.clevelandleader.com/node/9320 Vikings and Buckeyes Will Both Be Broadcast on Cleveland Airwaves Submitted by Eugmc on March 16, 2009 - 10:00pm. If you were a Cleveland State Viking or Ohio State Buckeye fan in Cleveland wondering who would get top billing on Friday night when the teams tip off at 9:50 you have no need to worry. Both games will be broadcast on separate stations. CBS 19 released this message on their website clearing up where you can catch the awaited NCAA Tournament Action...
March 18, 200916 yr NCAA Didn't Do Any Favors to Cleveland State in Selection Process Submitted by Eugmc on March 18, 2009 - 11:40am. Have you ever hear the saying "It's hard to beat a rigged game"? If you are a fan of Cleveland State basketball that is how you have been feeling the past few days. The Vikings came into the tournament selection process with an RPI of 54 (currently two slots better at 52) and winners of 12 of 14. CSU also owned a better RPI, which is the computer variable that the selection committee looks at for seeding the tournament, than 16 teams out of the 64 teams invited to the big dance. From a Cleveland State perspective, you would imagine to get a 11 to 12 seed with those type of statistics. Instead, the Vikings got a 13 seed which you could argue was the lowest 13 seed in the entire draw... http://www.clevelandleader.com/node/9346
March 18, 200916 yr OK...last article on Cleveland State...from the Dispatch: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ohio at center of the Madness Buckeye State has five teams in tournament, showing how deep its talent pool has become Wednesday, March 18, 2009 3:22 AM By Bill Rabinowitz THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH Question: Which state is sending the most teams to the NCAA men's basketball tournament? Answer: Ohio, with five. If you guessed wrong, don't kick yourself. Gary Waters, coach of Cleveland State, was oblivious, too, and his team is one of the five. The No. 4-seeded Demon Deacons play their opening-round game Friday night against the Vikings, who are in the field for the first time since a storybook run 23 years ago. March 21, 200916 yr The Vikings are up by 15 (27-12) at the midway point in the first half!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 21, 200916 yr Cleveland State made the front pages of USAtoday.com, ESPN.com, SI.com, and the top story of every sports section across the country this morning. Here are a couple good stories: From ESPN.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=forde_pat&id=4002983&sportCat=ncb Deacons not ready for Vikings By Pat Forde MIAMI -- Glass slipper? How about brass knuckles? The last Cinderella standing in this NCAA tournament is nobody's idea of a dainty thing wearing a tiara. The No. 13 seed Cleveland State Vikings, who humiliated fourth-seeded Wake Forest 84-69 here Friday night, are back-alley tough. They're a group of under-the-radar recruits molded into an overachieving team by a glowering coach who conducts practices that sometimes resemble street fights...
March 21, 200916 yr well i did some word during the downtime. This much more appropriate Real Cinderella, Thy Name is Cleveland State. The Vikings gave hints of being fairy-tale worthy in December, when point guard Cedric Jackson hit a 60-footer at the buzzer in the Carrier Dome to stun Syracuse. The Orange, one assumes, are ecstatic that they weren't the high seed who got stuck with the Vikings in the NCAA tournament -- because they had plenty of magic left in them. The unlucky team was Wake Forest, which wasn't just upset by Cleveland State on Friday -- the Deacons were steamrolled by 15 points. Whereas Jackson and his teammates went wild on the floor of the Carrier Dome, and partied after upsetting Butler in Horizon League finals to steal an automatic bid, their margin of victory was so large against Wake Forest that there was no mob scene afterward. The Deacs looked stunned, and so was much of the nation, because this was the biggest upset of the first weekend. Wake Forest had the talent -- with three potential first-round picks in Jeff Teague, Al-Farouq Aminu and James Johnson -- to make a run at the Final Four, but was thoroughly outplayed by a mid-major that draws no attention from NBA scouts. The last time Cleveland State was in the dance, as a 14-seed Cinderella in 1986, it upset Indiana and St. Joe's to reach the Sweet 16. Up next is 12-seeded Arizona, another team of underachieving pros, which means another trip to the Sweet 16 is a very realistic possibility for the Vikes. If Jackson, who had 19 points, eight assists and two rebounds, can outplay Teague, who had 10 points, five assists and seven turnovers, then Jackson can match up with Nic Wise. And if forward J'Nathan Bullock, who had 21 points and six boards, can outplay Aminu, who had 17 and six, then Bullock can hang with Jordan Hill. The fairy tale should continue on Sunday. (If there's anything good that might come out of Wake's first-round loss, it's that coach Dino Gaudio might be able to convince Teague, Johnson and Aminu to stay in Winston-Salem for another season. Teague is a top-10 pick in some mock drafts, but in the pressure cooker of the NCAA tournament, he didn't look even close to NBA-ready. If all three return, the Deacons would likely be ranked in the top three in the preseason polls, and have a more realistic shot at the Final Four -- as long as they get mentally tougher. They were talented enough to beat North Carolina and Duke this season, but had the tendency not to show up for games against weaker competition, such as ACC bottom-feeders Georgia Tech and here, Cleveland State.) http://www.fannation.com/si_blogs/tourney/posts/58561-five-things-we-learned-on-day-2-of-the-dance
March 21, 200916 yr Second article.. From SI.com: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/andy_staples/03/21/ClevelandState.WakeForest/ Rugby-like Cleveland State leaves no doubt against Demon Deacons By Andy Staples http://i2.cdn.turner.com/si/2009/writers/andy_staples/03/21/ClevelandState.WakeForest/clevelandstate2.jpg Cedric Jackson and Cleveland State took the fight to Wake Forest from the start. Bill Frakes/SI MIAMI -- It was the kind of block that ends games long before the clock strikes zero. It began with a slap of palm on leather. It continued with a scream. Six-foot-10 Wake Forest forward David Williams opened wide and unleashed a noise so guttural that it seemed to come from the mouth of hell itself. It ended with a thud. The ball sailed past the shooter, Cleveland State guard Cedric Jackson, thunked off the floor and flew into the scorer's table...
March 23, 200916 yr Today was a tough day for the Ohio teams left in tournament. Cleveland State gets eliminated by Arizona. Congrats on a great season!
March 23, 200916 yr tough loss last night..... hard to win a game when you can't make a shot; shades of the squad from nov/dec 08. though it was a great season for the vikings with equally grand prospects for next year. i'll certainly be renewing my season tickets and hope each of you consider purchasing a plan for yourself. a six pack of games with seats at lowerlevel midcourt costs $90...
March 23, 200916 yr Cold shooting was bound to happen. We didn't normally hit shots like we did against Wake. Norris Cole is a great building block for the future. We'll be back.
March 23, 200916 yr Author Recruiting for the 2010/2011 season will definitely get a bump from this year's run.
March 23, 200916 yr ^recruiting is the part that interests me. While Waters can put a quality team on the floor, we really need to improve recruiting. Butler is going to be very strong over the next two years at least. They are very young and we are graduating 4 starters. Cole will be a great one if he continues to improve over the next two years. It would be nice to grab a couple of quality JC transfers.
April 28, 200916 yr A little disappointed the Pee-Dee hasn't picked this up yet, at least I didn't see it online... http://www.csuvikings.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/042709aaa.html Bullock Signs Free Agent Contract With New York Jets Completes Switch From Hoops To Football & Makes It To The NFL April 27, 2009 CLEVELAND, Ohio -- When J'Nathan Bullock signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Cleveland State in the fall of 2004, he did so dreaming of the day that he would some day sign a professional contract. That dream came to fruition on Sunday night when he committed to starting his pro career in New York.
May 11, 200916 yr There is an article in Crain's saying that CSU is looking to start a football program. Can someone provide the article please?
May 11, 200916 yr http://crainscleveland.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090511/SUB1/305119985 CSU's interest in football more than passing Sport can drive school profile, add to campus life By JOEL HAMMOND 4:30 am, May 11, 2009 Few of the growing number of colleges and universities that have added football — or those considering it, such as Cleveland State University — are striving for a berth in a Bowl Championship Series bowl game. However, what those institutions are seeking is the positive, off-field impact a football program can have on a school's profile, enrollment and level of campus excitement... .
May 11, 200916 yr http://crainscleveland.com/article/20090511/BLOG03/905089941 Crain's reporter Joel Hammond talks money in sports. End game Blog entry: May 11, 2009, 4:30 am | Author: JOEL HAMMOND In today’s paper, I analyzed — as a 10-member Cleveland State University panel gauges whether the school should add football to its intercollegiate athletics department — what CSU could expect to gain if that committee made a positive recommendation and the school’s board of trustees then approved it. To do so, I solicited the opinions of officials from schools across the country that have recently added the sport or are in the process of doing so, among others. The consensus: While eventual success in the sport would be icing on the cake, the financial and general support it creates among alumni and current students and the excitement it generates on campus are the main goals...
May 12, 200916 yr So, CSU would start D I-AA, correct? If they can't make Krenzler Field work initially, how about bringing in some extra seating/bleachers at CWRU Village for at least he first couple years. Day game CWRU, night game CSU. It would benefit both schools. That would have a much more intimate feel than trying to rent out Browns Stadium for a couple games, if that's what it would have to come down to....maybe one game at Brown's Stadium would work. Again, if all this comes to be...

November 11, 200915 yr i hope they continue to stay away from football. it would be interesting, but the more i think about it the more i think its not a good idea for csu.

September 9, 201014 yr Cleveland Central Catholic basketball standout Anton Grady commits to Cleveland State Terry Pluto, The Plain Dealer, September 09, 2010 11:33 a.m. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland Central Catholic forward Anton Grady has made an oral commitment to Cleveland State. The 6-foot-8 senior is considered one of the top players in Ohio by several recruiting services, and he had offers from Dayton, Xavier, Cincinnati and several Mid-American Conference schools. "We sat down with Anton a few days ago, and we decided he wanted to stay home," said Javier Smith, the athletic director at Cleveland Central Catholic. "The key is [Cleveland State coach] Gary Waters. Anton's nephew is [Central Catholic product] Earl Boykins, who played for Waters at Eastern Michigan.
