My husband and I are in the process of moving to Cleveland. We are finding that our current carrier, Sprint, seems to have weak signals in the most important places for us (work, school, and home). Which carriers have the most dependable coverage overall in and around Cleveland?

There has been some issues around University Circle. Because of all the historical buildings and such, its been difficult for some providers to locate cellphone towers in that area. I had Cingular when I lived near Little Italy and I had some issues. Now that I'm in Ohio City, I never have issues with my reception.

Verizon!!

Also inside these old buildings that were made of brick, concrete and plaster, it is hard for signals to travel thru at times.

I do okay with Cingular (or ATT as it is now).  Only bad spot is Dead Mans Curve in the tunnel.

I also have Cingular/AT&T and live in a mid-rise brick condo building just off Lakewood's Gold Coast. I can get signals in my condo, but if I go in the elevators, stairwell or parking garage (with the garage door down), I can't get signals. I also have problems getting signals inside my office building at the west end of North Olmsted, but that's better than I had with Sprint -- I couldn't get a signal anywhere near my office building let alone inside it.

I've known many with service issues with sprint.

If service not price is the issue, stay away from Revol! It has improved a bit and its homegrown and all, plus offers a good alternative for those that can't afford a plan on the mainstream networks, but again if service quality is the issue beware.

let me confirm how much sprint blows on the east side.

Verizon, nearly no complaints.

Anybody have any experience with Alltel? A google search revealed a lot of love for Alltel but I've never heard of it before.

I have Cingular/ATT and have the same problem as KJP,  If i'm in the elevator, parking garage, the foyer of my apartment and the hallways that lead from the foyer, I get terrible reception.  The foyer is pretty much the center of my apartment so it appears Mov2Ohio is right about older buildings.

My only comment is that literally about 60% of my friends have verizon, 30% have cingular and the remaining 10% have alltell, sprint or other carrier.

ATT/Cingular.

The only problem I have is in the basement of the Urban affairs building at CSU and the I90 East/West at the I71/I490 splits.

I have a Motorola L6.... might have something to do with it.

Verizon is the best. I had Sprint and it suck big time. At&t is ok too.

I've had Alltel for seven years and have had no real problems to speak of. Occasional drop outs, but pretty rare. I can't say I've heard many bad reports from my friends that have Verizon, so I'd say either are pretty safe choices.

Having just switched from Verizon to AT&T/Cingular (gadget fan boys can guess why ;-)), I can say that there is a noticeable difference in service quality.  Having spent years with Verizon and its predecessors (everyone remember CellularOne and AirTouch?) I had become blissfully unaware of the concept of dropped calls and extended bouts of no service.  Now, this is a seemingly daily experience.  I would say that unless you are contemplating acquiring a certain, newly launched "revolutionary mobile phone, breakthrough internet communicator, blah blah blah...", I would go for Verizon.

However, one redeeming feature of AT&T is the customer service in their stores (haven't used phone support yet). They are truly a different class of people compared to the arrogant, unmotivated, and sometimes rude service I received at nearly every Verizon store I ever entered.  But the quality of the phone service on Verizon always made up for it in my mind.

this is just my personal experience, but the verizon store on Rockside road hands down has the best customer service around. Its like they are used to dealing with annoying yappy businessmen.
