See..this is why I like New York City... There's few places with such high demand for space that they do crazy stuff like this. If this was in Cincinnati it would look RETARDED. But given the level of demand, and general chaos in NYC I would consider something like this appropriate. With the new structure surrounding the old one, it will force the older building to stay in good condition (or else it would bring the other property down).

^when "air rights" becomes common vocabulary, that's when you usually have high demand

 

I say usually b/c detroit has even had a few air rights deals, and we certainly aren't hurting for space downtown.
