Whimsical!  Everywhere could use a little more fun.  Some of these look like they are temporary--is it a special summer display?  Beats the hell out of a bunch of stuffy Civil War soldiers with bayonets pointing skywards.

The sculptures are the work of J. Seward Johnson. There's an exhibit in Auburn, Indiana, too. I think it runs through September.

Saddest thing about those photos is that you see practically no one on the streets, save for the statues.  It's almost as if the city needs those statues permanently to make it look like people go downtown.  :-(

We were taking bets at work as to how long it would be before they were vandalized, but apparently they weren't, or if they were it was cleaned up pretty quick.

Hamilton had 25 Seward Johnson sculptures in the summer of 2005 displayed around town, it was a pretty fabulous sight. Hamilton also has two permanent Seward Johnsons that were installed in the mid-90's. One is of a girl being pushed on a bike by her father; it was stolen around 1998 and then recovered eight months later.

A couple of drunken hillbillies were arrested in Auburn for trying to steal one that they hoped to sell for scrap. They damaged it, but didn't succeed in taking it.

there's a famous (or infamous) J. Seward Johnson work called "Double Check" facing Ground Zero that survived 9/11 http://www.projectrebirth.org/img/doubleCheck.jpg. It has now been re-installed on approximately the same spot in a new park on the same site.

I just don't like those J. Seward Johnson sculptures, but I guess many people do so...

I've been pretty amazed how popular the sculptures have been.  Seems like every weekend their are groups of people posing and taking picture with them....probably for the photo contest sponsored by the Downtown Dayton Partnership.  They have posted some of the entries on their website.

I don't like these "urban living" statues.  It's as if we've so thoroughly forgotten what a vibrant city street looks like that we have to create museum pieces, little open air dioramas, to remind ourselves.  That, and they are so hopelessly Norman Rockwell.  Where are the panhandlers, homeless, and hoodlums?

 

Also I wonder how often per day the Marylin Monroe statue gets groped.

yeah i don't like'm either. for those reasons and because they really aren't technically very good either. ditto for the guitars in the clev and all the previous cows and pigs and apples before those too. still, most people do like'm and they are popular so what the hey, they are temporary, so fine with me i dont care.

 

otoh i do like the abstract flight thing and the (above) wright bros airplane public sculptures. the latter was pretty much mandatory for dayton (maybe cleveland could have a superman statue somewhere?).
