Posted August 5, 200717 yr I don't know if this fits here, but has anyone else noticed a lot more middle-class white guys shaving all of their hair off? I feel like wherever I go, I see a somewhat average looking guy sporting the 100% bald look. Was there a trend missive I missed?
August 5, 200717 yr If a black guy has a bald head, its in style. If a white guy has a bald head, he has leukemia.
August 5, 200717 yr Speaking of white people, why do they wear sandals so much? Even when it's not even that warm outside. If you ever see a white guy with plaid shorts on and a polo, I GUARANTEE YOU he's wearing birkenstock-esque sandals with 'em.

Nobody should be wearing plaid & birkenstocks.. those two are like oil and water. Gotta wear the boat shoes.
August 5, 200717 yr I'd rather see a bald head than a comb-over or the "bozo"/tadpole look. And on some guys - bald head + goatee = :-D clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
August 5, 200717 yr If a white guy has a bald head, he has leukemia. Never assume anything. My older brother recently shaved his head. He's not a cancer patient, nor is he trying to follow a trend. He did it out of support for our mom. Our mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in May, and she started chemotherapy in June. It was very rough on her when her hair fell out. For support, my brother decided to shave his head as well.
August 5, 200717 yr ^It's just a joke I heard some comedian say. I can see why you wouldn't think its funny though.
August 5, 200717 yr I shaved mine when my hair started to fall out during chemo. That was 10 years ago. After the chemo ended it started to grow back, but then my genes from Dad's side of the family kicked in and it thinned out fast on top. Now, I just have it buzzed every few weeks. Tidy and low-maintenance, without the bother of shaving it.
August 5, 200717 yr From my personal archive... Seems to be working allright for this guy: Not so much for this guy: I also have some photos of Jim Tarbell on film but since I don't have a film scanner, you'll all be spared those photos.
August 5, 200717 yr ^It's just a joke I heard some comedian say. I can see why you wouldn't think its funny though. That's okay. :) I recommend adding a winking face or something by jokes.
August 5, 200717 yr bald heads don't look good all on black men either. The shape of the head has a lot to do with it. In early 2002 we had a family bet and the losers had to shave their heads. My cousins didn't look to bad, although, one of my cousins husband, who is half asian, strongly resembled Ming the Merciless from Flash Gordon! I looked like the leader of a middle east terrorist cell! Not cute! During that time, whenever I traveled, I always got the extra "once over". Not Fun!
August 5, 200717 yr If you're white, the biggest risk is that people will think you are a skinhead (and sunburn, I suppose). But I can see why some guys shave it anyway. If you get the bald spot around the top or top-back of the head, that just looks too bad to just go on with the old style. Personally, I am counting the days till I get thin enough up top that I will have to decide- bald spot, or just plain bald. Actually, what I've noticed alot of is the "bald hipster". I guess it's a look. I don't think I could pull it off, though. Mayday, What's a "bozo/tadpole" look?
August 5, 200717 yr Again, it's one of those "it depends on the person" things (how it's styled, etc.) but some examples: Bozo: http://www.kidzmusic.com/images2/john_lithgow_s.jpg Tadpole (also known as "it's not falling out, it's just falling backward): http://www.stars-productions.com/AR/_come/bob-goldthwait.jpg clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
August 5, 200717 yr Some men look great with a bald head, others look awful. I shaved my head a few years ago and looked like a cross between Alvin the chipmunk and Sister Wendy. Bad choice. Even though I don't have an overbite, the round glasses made me look super-extra-sensationally geeky. I was embarrassed to leave the house! My older brother is as bald as a cue ball, as are two of his sons. The other son has a full mop of red hair. They all look fine.
August 5, 200717 yr I shaved my head a few years ago and looked like a cross between Alvin the chipmunk and Sister Wendy. Thanks for the laugh!
August 5, 200717 yr A friend of mine shaves his head and it looks pertty good. He has the right shape of head for it, though. Re: baldness...if I ever start balding I will NOT go with the combover. I will probably just cut whatever remains very short. I don't think I'd look so good with my head completely bald. Or maybe I'll just invest in a few really good hats.
August 5, 200717 yr I had the Bozo look, Mayday (of perfect hair and skin), so abhors, but I grew my hair out and, by tying it back in a pony tail, achieve a lessened "Bozo" look. More of a George Carlin look. Being partially bald is a PITA. Mayday will probably wind up with a thick head of beautiful silvery grey hair. $^$^#!@
August 5, 200717 yr I'm with May Day --- bald head + goatee = :-D Makes me want to :wink2: and get all
August 5, 200717 yr I havn't got around to the total shave yet, but I cut it in a more burr cut, as I am going bald and don't want to deal with stuff like combovers and so forth, plus shaved bald would look silly with my full beard. And its a lot less hassle I don't see this as a white or black issue (the way the thread parent spun it in the thread header), or even a style issue, more as a functional/efficiency one. If I end up like my two grandfathers, particularly my German one, I probably won't have any hair left at all by retirement.
August 5, 200717 yr I was just making an observational comment. Black guys have been shaving their heads for a while. All the sudden, white guys started doing it to like bananas. I don't really care. I just wondered if there was some cultural impetus.
August 6, 200717 yr ^I think there was a "Queer Eye" episode where they basically told a balding guy to just shave it off. I don't know how much impact that would have, but who knows? Maybe it's an admiration of Vin Diesel's machismo? "Mayday (of perfect hair and skin)" You obviously haven't seen me in person. And like I said - it depends on the person! clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
August 6, 200717 yr I've always thought it would be cool to shave my beard, shave my head, and just leave nothing but sideburns...
August 6, 200717 yr I saw a dude once who was shaved bald except for sideburns and one strip of hair right at the base of his skull/neck. Very cyber-punk. re: tadpoles/bozos- I see, those are both receding hairline looks. I could handle that, it's the bald spot in the middle of the head that is really ugly. That is the sort of bald spot that usually initiates the combover response, but requires a good headshaving instead. edit: as for the bald hipster look, isn't it Moby that spawned that?

I'm with May Day --- bald head + goatee = :-D Makes me want to :wink2: and get all  Earlier today, I embarked on a day trip to Brooklyn, where I went to a Garage House party entitled Kiss My Black A$$ in Fort Green park [i'll post pictures later] and there were quite a few man black, white, Latino and Asian men with bald heads. jmjr and mayday there was lots of eye candy! lol  the party goes until 2 AM. I've always thought it would be cool to shave my beard, shave my head, and just leave nothing but sideburns... You want to single handily bring back 70's pork chop side burns, huh? I think anyone who is balding should just suck it up and do the "Trump Comb-over"! LMAO.
August 6, 200717 yr I've had my hair cut down to 1/8th of an inch for five years now for the following reasons - Girls say they like it - I don't have comb it or style it in the morning - I cut it myself typically so I don't have to pay for a haircut.
August 6, 200717 yr a chocolate brotha with a bald head! yummy! If you're a white guy who sports a bald head, I think you might be label "hot" based on your steelo. If you in style and fashionable you'll come across sexy. If you wear skinny jeans and are pierced, you might be perceived as a skinhead. As others have stated it depends on the individual.

August 6, 200717 yr Not Michele Ndege Ocello. Quimbob you scare me. No India Aire either. I like my wenches with long hair.
August 6, 200717 yr made me look super-extra-sensationally geeky. I pictured Moby. lol! thats what i call those shaved skinny hipster white guys in ny too...moby's. ie., "the bathroom is located over there to the right of the moby. no, not that moby, the other moby." i think if you are balding it mandatory you at least cut it real short. nobody likes getting whipped by a combover in the wind....err, sorry for that visual, but whe you actually see that happen its seared in your brain. also, it looks fine on all skin colors as long as you dont have a funny shaped head. personally i dont go moby, but close - i get mine shaved down to number one on the clippers. ie., bruce willis after he finally cut it.
August 6, 200717 yr mrnyc...man I just knew you had a 'fro or cornrows! I've gotten my hair cut (to a 2) before at a place called fros and rows. What a great name for a business.

August 7, 200717 yr I put it off for years because of the "skinhead" political thing. I finally tried it in late 2003 and haven't gone back. -I started getting age-guessed 10 to 15 years younger than I am. -I was able to go more than a week after a haircut without it getting messy. -I started getting nicknamed "Steve" (Springer) and "Stone Cold (rasslin)" working at the bar. -Women want to rub my head even when I say "that part's natural". (This did *not* happen before I shaved it...trust me) -When one of the professional recruiters I work with said it actually looked more professional, that became a no brainer.
August 7, 200717 yr Another thing about shaving the head....find out if your workplace has a rule against wearing hats while working. I wore a hat in to cover my baldness. The HR Director told me to remove it...I thought she was gonna pee her pants laughing. I got to keep it on.
August 7, 200717 yr -I started getting nicknamed "Steve" (Springer). JERRY JERRY JERRY JERRY JERRY JERRY JERRY JERRY JERRY JERRY JERRY JERRY JERRY JERRY
August 7, 200717 yr For all you guys getting thin on top - I started noticing it a few years back and was pretty depressed about it. So I just did some quick research and found most believe the main cause of baldness is DHT (byproduct of testosterone). There were a bunch of ads for things to help you stop producing testosterone (which would stop DHT naturally), but that made you a woman - so, not so much. Anyway, lignans found in flax hulls natually bond to DHT and carry it out without it harming your follicles. So, I have now been taking flax lignans (also a known antioxidant) for about 3 years with absolutely no more hair loss. I'm sure it won't last forever, but its keeping it at the -need a very bright light to tell- stage. So, although its still bothersome, it's helped. Just a suggestion in case anyone cared. And yeah, short hair is good for thinning hair =)

Combovers look retarded. But so does Moby. I guess some people are screwed either way. Anyone that's balding looks better with a number 1 guard though.
August 7, 200717 yr The thing is, if I merely cut it real short its still easy to tell how much is gone, plus how many grey hair's she's caused.... It also helps to be over 6' and over 200....or have a lot of ink.
August 17, 200717 yr I'm with May Day --- bald head + goatee = :-D Makes me want to :wink2: and get all  HA HA HA! Thats what I'm talkin' about!
August 24, 200717 yr Last night I finished "The Game" by Neil Strauss, book published in 2005 chronicling his social activities from 2002-2004. Basically on the internet he discovers the underground pickup world, joins it, rises to the top, then he falls in love and throws it all away. Early on he shaves his head as part of his makeover. Here he is probably in 2005 with his then-girlfriend (the girl he confesses he fell in love with), a guitarist in one of Courtney Love's bands: He's a decent writer but this story tells itself. i sensed an odd resemblance between his account of falling in love with this Lisa girl and Hemingway falling in love with the nurse in A Farewell to Arms. The guy "Mystery" who is the star of the VH-1 show "The Pickup Artist" is a central figure in Straus's book. It's hilarious reading this book and then seeing the actual guy Mystery in action, it's pretty much exactly as how he described him.
