Folks, if that's your attitude - fine, but don't dare question why you can't get a date. That's a good point. I'm way more likely to dance to Def Leppard than rap, for one because I know how to play some of their songs (mostly their early New Wave of British Heavy Metal stuff, but I do know "Pour Some Sugar on Me"). I know how to move to it better than the fake 13/8 time stuff that poses as rap today. Hell, if I as a musician have trouble moving to it, most chicks aren't going to be able to either. And they can't. That's one reason the 2 and 4 '80s rock has made a resurgence at the dance clubs; the other being that it actually has melody instead of just beats.

Lighten up for crying out loud - as though having a silly moment dancing to retro-cheese is going to destroy your cred. Folks, if that's your attitude - fine, but don't dare question why you can't get a date. I had a professor in college who would occasionally throw a spike strip out in front of emotional class responses to this or that. He'd raise his hand and after a second or two of silence he'd say "Nostalgia folks...it ain't what it used to be!". There's a big difference between pop culture nostalgia and liking something old because it's better than what's happening now. Nostalgia is programmed into people by pop culture so that pop culture companies can make money off of them for the rest of their credit card swiping lives. 80's nights or any retro events should maybe instead be called Fnord Fests. >If you don't like clubs that play that stuff then don't go to them. I don't know why you expect people to take on your taste in music and think that yours is inherently superior. I'm sure that attitude is successful when socializing with others. And definitely we've got certain elements of culture for which it's seemingly okay to make value judgements and others for which it isn't. This "art and music is subjective" thought is just plain wrong, and the overall popularity of something means very little. Of the four major points of the Modernist age (Expressionism, Instrumentalism, Primitivism, Naturalism), it's Expressionism that was both destroyed the most soundly by critics but the one that remains the most conspicuous and stubborn of artistic activity and popular appreciation. Expressionism will never again be high art and Sublime is an Expressionist band. It's high school poetry and nothing more. "I'm bored -- I'm chairman of the board!" is Literary with a capital L.
October 20, 200717 yr Sublime aren't very popular outside the Midwest. I think the correct construction should be, "Sublime isn't very popular outside the Midwest." I would also like to add that that opinion, however it may be formed grammatically, does not jibe with my experience. Look, 85% of males have bad taste in music and 98% of females do. This is the best statistic ever cited on UO. The best.
May 21, 200817 yr The Beachland Ballroom and Tavern - Cleveland Surly Girl Saloon - Columbus Mitzi Jerman's Café - Cleveland Five O'Clock Bar - Lakewood Andyman's Treehouse - Columbus We all know what our own favorites are. What ones would you add, what ones would you remove? Discuss..
May 21, 200817 yr Parkview Lounge (Cleveland - W. 58th). Pretty good food, old fashioned bowling machine and they regularly get great bands on the weekends, including one of my local, long-time favorites, 15 60 75 (the Numbers Band). Islander Bar & Grill (Middleburg Heights on Pearl). Great mix of people with character, decent menu with average bar food, very cheap prices, wonderfully tacky bar/karaoke area, pool tables. Groucho's Saloon (Middleburg Heights on Bagley). Great pictures all over the walls, pool tables, cheap drinks, tacky dance floor/karaoke area. Yes, same as Islander except the bonus is you can order a pizza from wonderful Capri pizza next door and bring into the bar to eat and watch the game.
May 21, 200817 yr ^And Best crazy-religious-evangalist-bluesman That too! I also love that old school revolving beer cooler behind the bar.
May 21, 200817 yr ^And Best crazy-religious-evangalist-bluesman that guy used to play with jimi hendrix.
May 21, 200817 yr ^I went to grade school with the son of the major hooples owner. Another son now runs Parkview.
May 21, 200817 yr those are 2 of the best. I think the name is "norm" father and son for both if I recall. In the same vein as hooples and parkview is Hotz cafe. Happy Dog although newer, but is following in the same tradition.
May 21, 200817 yr I like the following: Jigsaw - Parma Flyers - Parma Heights Colony - Cleveland Heights Mitchells - Westlake Flannery's - DT Cleveland Just my personnel favorites from years past. Now with the kids: Chuckee Cheese - Parma....and that's it.

May 21, 200817 yr That's a pretty good list. I'll add the Rivari Room in Columbus, and the Happy Dog in Cleveland. And Frosty's Pizza in Put in Bay of course. May 22, 200817 yr I note that the Clevelanders are pretty heavy responders on this thread! we clearly like to drink more than the rest of ohio.
May 22, 200817 yr Best in what? Character? Beer selection? Music? I like dives, but that's probably what Esquire is looking for -- so don't expect to see Dick's Den (Columbus) on the list. Probably the best back-bar (and other woodwork) in Ohio is the Elevator Draught Haus in downtown Columbus, though I wouldn't rate it so high on atmosphere. Larry's, across from OSU, used to be one of the all-time great bars.
May 22, 200817 yr The old Walnut Hills Bar in Dayton is legendary. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
May 22, 200817 yr Grammer's - Cincinnati http://natilife.blogspot.com/2008/02/sneak-peek-at-grammers.html (video of historic interior)
May 22, 200817 yr ^ yeah, the elevator or whatever (its had many names over the yrs) is definately the best old classic looking bar in ohio. also, don't forget the ringside hidden away in downtown cols, that has or had some great atmosphere too. ditto the round bar in the claremont hotel and it's sunken floor googie/rat-pack era charms. you know kramer's in dayton always reminds me of osu's larry's for some reason. it's the ud version i guess. except with 40oz'ers. Euclid Tavern pre-2001 yeah, and along those lines my formerly fav bar in cinci ---> corry's, home of the late robert "h-bomb" ferguson....now its called something like the mad frog, which means its as lame as the new euc.
May 22, 200817 yr The old Walnut Hills Bar in Dayton is legendary. which site is thee old original one exactly? i dont remember. is it the one that's tanks now?
May 22, 200817 yr The old Walnut Hills Bar in Dayton is legendary. which site is thee old original one exactly? i dont remember. is it the one that's tanks now? Someone else probably knows better, but I believe that is the original location (hence the name). Then for some reason I think they moved downtown, and then to the location at Brown and Wyoming. Then the owners parted ways a couple years ago and one kept the location and renamed it Jimmy's Cornerstone and other got the name and opened a new Walnut Hills bar behind Nothing But Noodles (or whatever it is called now). That Walnut Hills has since closed and been replace by Bargo's, but according to the Walnut Hills website, there may be yet another location for Walnut Hills in the future.
May 22, 200817 yr Bump. This Saturday I'm going to be at the GWAR/Gil Mantera's Party Dream show at Bogart's. I've mostly been hanging out at the Heid-Away Lounge in recent months.
May 22, 200817 yr No, it's the recently reopened bar in Heid's Bowling Alley on Cheviot Rd. My uncle's band's practice space is in the basement of a nearby dentist's office...we've had a few "practices" that met at the Heid-Away and never left.
May 22, 200817 yr ^^^first concert i ever went to was a gwar/danzig double bill. oh, the memories. i should actually try and make this.

I know, I probably don't fit the image one might have of a GWAR fan, but it's true. :-) I once saw a beat up car where someone had cut up a WGAR bumper sticker and rearranged it to say GWAR. I couldn't help busting up laughing. Epic. Hey if I can like OMD and the Pet Shop Boys, you can like GWAR.
May 22, 200817 yr Fair enough, as long as I can like Motorhead as well ;-) Anyway, getting back on topic I have to throw in Rays in Kent - nice all-around bar, great beer list and d@mn good burgers to boot. While it's not exactly divey or a neighborhood joint, I think the bar at Great Lakes Brewing is pretty snazzy. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
May 22, 200817 yr ugh, but the new Ray's is just too sterile feeling for me. I miss the old Ray's. And the Venice.
May 22, 200817 yr ^When you say "old Ray's" - I was last there in 96ish - what have they done? clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
May 23, 200817 yr probably my fav regular old bar in ohio is close quarters in avon lake. if for no other reason because at one point it reined for awhile in the guinness book of world records as the smallest bar. it's basically a garage and forever it had no bathroom. you had to go out and go up to the house and use the bathroom. too funny. later, they finally built a bathroom. it still has the usual clevelandia staples -- excellent local brews, perch & pierogies.
May 23, 200817 yr And Frosty's Pizza in Put in Bay of course. Glad to see this mentioned...no Ohio bar list is complete without any mention of PIB bars. Round House & Frosty's have to be included, and I guess you have to mention the Beer Barrel since its in the guines book of world records, even though I'm not a big fan
May 23, 200817 yr best bar in nyc is mcsorley's ale house on 7th(?) McSorley's...anywhere that serves you two when you order one is my type of place...
May 23, 200817 yr For Athens, I gotta go with: Tony's: only real "mature" bar in Athens, also some of the only well-trained bartenders in town- they can make anything. They also typically play the best music in Athens. Do they still have free appetizers duing happy hour (or maybe it was from 4-5?)? I loved Tony's... Blue Gator: [bLASPHEMY -THE GREENERY!] many great concerts, cool atmosphere. I found myself doing a mini-bar crawl most weekend nights once I turned 21...Pigskin, Juntion, Pub, Cat's Eye...I sometimes miss the days before cell phones when you'd just pop in places looking to run into people rather than texting them where you are.
May 23, 200817 yr >While I only prefer the bar during the day when it's less crowded, Courtside gets a nod, if only for their pizza. The thing about Courtside was how its inauspicious exterior belied the fact that it mysteriously attracted the best-looking (using pop culture as my gauge, not my own ideas) girls in town, and lots of them. There were times I was in there (or Paw-Pur's or The Crystal) when there were not one or two but like 12-15 girls who were surely the alpha females of their respective high schools. It was interesting to watch them spar with each other using only glances and subtle body language since outside of Athens they were used to being the dominant females in any and all situations, especially since there were a few times when for unknown reasons large numbers of them showed up before the crowds and had nothing to do but get silently mad at each other. >Smiling Skull: great atmosphere, and Andie rocks. The Cat's Den is the smallest bar in Athens, about the size of a Jiffy Lube waiting room, and composed almost entirely of plywood. But it has a full liquor license unlike the Skull meaning people walk next door to do shots in the Den and then promptly return to the Skull.
May 23, 200817 yr Ah, Courtside I spent much time there my 1st Senior year. I had two friends that were bartenders there and would only get charged a $5 tab after being there all night.
May 23, 200817 yr ^If all the girls in Athens are so hot, why haven't I seen any hot girls in your photos?
