August 7, 200717 yr Thanks for the thread - some great Lorain pix including my old parish (St Stan's) and the school I attended for kindergarten (Masson) - I was holding off on a Holy Lorain thread of churches since I read you were planning one, but I may have to jump in and put one together. Time's running out on some of the ethnic parishes due to the Cleveland diocese's clustering plans...
August 7, 200717 yr ^ please do -- i was only there two days and didnt have time. as you know, there are so many excellent little ethnic churches -- deserves its own thread (i always wanted to do another thread on erie ave aka lake road homes too, but feel free to do that one too).
August 7, 200717 yr I agree on the Erie Ave homes - my cousin lives across from the Overlook Apts on East Erie and Nebraska Aves. There is some excellent housing stock there - I wish the neighbors would band together like those in "Charleston Village" and make it into a historic district. I also think the houses and churches on East 31st in SoLo are worthy of a historic district. It seems as though one of my HS classmates will be the mayor come November, so I'll have to pester him sometime about this.
August 7, 200717 yr Oooh Lorain!!! One scary town (and it was scary on my brief visit there years ago). But man, a Dog and Suds? I remember those from Chicago in the 1960s. I didn't know they made it to Ohio, too.
August 7, 200717 yr ^ lol! i hear ya. ohio's most diverse city is still an old hardcore factory town and its definately not for the faint of heart jeffery  i see the website says dog 'n suds had 750 outlets, but now they are down to 11 including that one. buckeye excellent idea. btw the outgoing mayor was a classmate of my bros. please take a look at the thread of the pipeyard/soccer academy thread too & comment when you get a chance.

Wow, St Stans? My old parish in Chicago was a St Stans! I certainly would love to see a Holy Lorain thread. This little city is sounding more and more interesting!
August 7, 200717 yr ^ rob yes, generally. thats why we are talking about a lake road thread....mansions. buckeye will have to get to it before i can. jeffrey lorain was once known as ohio's "city of churches" so to whet your churches appetite --- for starters here are four orthodox churches from this website: http://www.orthodoxwomenlorain.org/index.html#churches st george Reverend Father Milorod Orlich st cyril and methodius Reverend Deacon Blagoy E. Nicoloff, Attached saints peter and paul Very Reverend Father Basil Stoyka, Pastor saint nicholas Reverend Father Oikonomos Michael C. Gulgas

August 8, 200717 yr Years ago I used to deliver pizzas to South Lorain. Let me tell ya' rough barrio+midnight delivery+carrying money and pizza+big glowing sign on car roof advertising same=big fun! Never actually got robbed, though I definitely was sweating at a few "suspect" deliveries. Most of the people were gold, though. Dogs 'N' Suds rules! Their rootbeer is top notch and sugar sweet, used to get it by the gallon.
August 8, 200717 yr whatever happened to the a&w on the west side of lorian on the lake road? or was it in vermilion? that was just like dog 'n suds and also had great root beer in iced mugs. we used to go mess with the roller skating waitress girls as teens. nice that one of them is still around.
August 8, 200717 yr Never went there. Didn't go to the westside much, except as a kid to visit a restaurant owned by my parents' friends, "Arpats", on Lake.
August 9, 200717 yr I regret I never made it up to Lorain (though I made a brief stop in Elyria)... sure does have a lot of character
August 9, 200717 yr ^ you'd feel right at home w/ it being an old factory town. some people have said its like a pennsylvania mill town, except w/ waterfront and valleys instead of landlocked hills. ps -- there used to be a caricature of a guy w/ 60's glasses and a looong stretched neck on that shop. i was disappointed to see they painted him over, it used to freak me out.

August 9, 200717 yr ^ yes, except imagine it with those iconic 60's malcolm x walkman glasses. it was ridiculous.

August 9, 200717 yr much of my wife's father's family lives in lorain. this area always reminds me youngstown a bit when we visit...
