Posted August 6, 200717 yr Richmond is hard on the eyes, but there is some interesting architecture to be found. It seems to have been a trend to rip the entablatures off of downtown buildings, as you'll see. Seems kind of out of scale with downtown, much like the Harding in Marion
August 6, 200717 yr looks nice but.....what? where in the sam hail is tom raper or whatever the heck its called now? for you eastside ohioans --- everyone from north to south in the whole western half of ohio was (is?) bombarded by that guys commercials constantly. wait -- i see its still around: http://www.tomraper.com/
August 7, 200717 yr The Hamilton of Indiana right down to the Elder-Beerman. Its been a couple of years since I've been to Richmond, but it looks like it has seen some decline. Ink - you do realize that they had a pedestrian malll--they closed off a "main" street to traffic. Never covered it though LOL ;)

I think my dad may have some postcards of the old "mall". I'll have dig them out and scan them while I am home. I still can't get over how rough it looks.
August 7, 200717 yr Nice! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

August 7, 200717 yr I bought a camper from Tom Raper about 1995. They were kind of high-pressure on the selling, but I got it for a good price. They ran an extremely efficient sales operation, right down to the paperwork processing, and their service department was probably one of the best overall for RV dealers - competent, fast and courteous. Some of the photos show vestiges of the downtown pedestrian mall that they had in the 1970s: It was pretty popular for a little while, until the newness wore off. I came through Richmond on the return leg of a bicycle trip from Fort Wayne to Louisville, and was walking my bike through the mall just to look it over when some dumbsh!t a-hole cop came up and said bicycles weren't allowed, and I'd have to leave it at one end or the other if I wanted to walk through the mall. I had my camping gear tied on, and wasn't about to leave it unattended. Officious Ba$tard! As you enter Richmond from the north, you cross a bridge over the railroad tracks. On the left you can see a very large and once-grand brick Pennsylvania Railroad depot with brick columns in front.
August 7, 200717 yr I am actually in Richmond now, I am staying with friends on the eastside in the starr historic district. From what locals have told me, there has been alot of progress for richmond, and though it declined, its actually getting better. I took a walk through the city, its beautiful, alot of homes were being renovated in the starr historic district, theres a few just down the street being remodeled.
August 7, 200717 yr You guys do realize that the pedestrian mall is the result of a downtown explosion that killed 41 people in 1968. There's a memorial downtown, but I didn't see it pictured. The pedestrian mall was scrapped in the late 1990s. I used to work in Richmond and I had to pass through downtown to get to work, which was on the north side of the city--out in the sticks. I remember that Indiana Football Hall of Fame because it sits at a traffic light that seemed to always be red.

I had forgotten about that. It was a horrendous blast and destroyed a big chunk of the downtown, with numerous injuries, too.

"Save today, Tom Raper's way!" i think we are a couple eras apart. i never heard of him until i went to bg. he must have expanded the ads before he cut them out. The Elder-Beerman, cladding jobs, etc. are interesting similarities however. you're trying to imply there is a diffference between hamilton and middletown?

Just like Lorain is Elyria's little bro.
August 8, 200717 yr My hometown! Inkaelin, you actually caught the title agency my mom owns in one of the shots. I should note that, unlike all of you western Ohioans (and apparently even some Northeast Ohioans), I didn't get the Tom Raper commercials growing up. I guess we were in a blackout area b/c I heard everyone told me about them, but I didn't see them until I started undergrad. Imagine that ... living within the eye of the storm that is Tom Raper RVs.

August 24, 200717 yr It is a crime what has been done to many of those buildings...I don't even know where to start, but this one may be the most disturbing of the bunch (although there are some VERY close runner-ups).
August 25, 200717 yr Thanks for the tour, Ink! Back when I lived in Hamilton my family and I would always go through there via US 27 to connect to I-70 when we were headed to points north and west. We always took Hamilton-Richmond (duh!) Road/OH 177 (and IN 227 on the Hoosier side) to US 27 to get there. I have pleasant memories of trips to visit my brother when he was a student at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, in the mid-late 1980s. About Tom Raper RV, I remember hearing they opened a store in Fairfield some five years ago in the old Furrow's store ("Don't do it yourself without us! Furrow.") on Dixie Highway (Route 4) at, I think, Michael Lane (opposite Camelot Drive). Is that still there?
August 25, 200717 yr Growing up in Middletown, we used to get Channel 4 out of Indiana..I think it was a Richmond station. And yes, these commercials ran constantly. PreservationRestoration, you might be thinking of WKOI 43. That's a religious station out of Richmond. I sometimes get it in my apartment; Springfield's Channel 47 is a translator station. It used to be called "43C" in TV Guide. There is a Channel 4 in Indianapolis, WTTV (I almost said WTTE; they must have changed call letters), or Indy's CW affiliate.

August 26, 200717 yr My favorite buildings is in the first shot. I just love the old red brick buildings with those bay windows.
