November 18, 201311 yr yeah i guess they more fully realized whats going on around it with all the development and changed the design into a little hovel, shire, oasis (?) of greenery.

November 26, 201311 yr a new design for the northern highline spur: http://www.thehighline.org//blog/2013/11/11/new-design-concept-for-the-high-line-at-the-rail-yards Great update mrnyc. The High Line just keeps getting better and better. I found another report about this extension at the Architect's Newspaper. Cheesy headline to be sure - but it did contain a couple of aerial maps to go along with the renderings that you posted earlier: A/N Blog: We’re Bowled Over by James Corner Field Operations’s Plans For the High Line
December 7, 201311 yr ^ yeah the best part is that the northern terminus of the highline park slopes right down to the front door of the javits convention center. what an amenity for conventioneers that will be. of course, if the cleveland aerial tram ever comes true, i'd call it a tie!

January 21, 201411 yr ^ the lot cater-corner from that one and next to dvf and the standard hotel is getting a mini-office tower.
January 21, 201411 yr this former exxon station at w14/10ave under the highline is going to be shoppes. i talked to an hvac guy and he said its delayed due to sandy and peoblems pouring the basement. his complaint was its tight to do his work in.
March 15, 201411 yr the final section of the highline park is on-track to open later this year http://m.ny.curbed.com/archives/2014/03/06/checking_in_on_the_high_lines_final_span_to_open_this_fall.php
March 22, 201411 yr per dnainfo & gothamist blogs - the queensway aka the queens version of the highline is taking a step forward: Check Out These Renderings For The New QueensWay (Friends of QueensWay) The QueensWay, similar in concept to the High Line but in, you know, Queens, took one small step closer to realization today with the release of new renderings for the above-ground park. The sketches for the scenic new walkway and bike path, which would encompass a 3.5 mile stretch of the abandoned Rockaway rail line between Ozone and Rego parks, were released by Friends of QueensWay ahead of next week's community workshop, DNAinfo reports. The two images offer only a glimpse of the many divergent portions of the park, more of which will be revealed at next week's meeting, Andrew Crawford, a Friends of QueensWay member told the news site. Or as she put it: "This is just a sample of the really wondrous visioning that's going into this and how it's really going to work for the entire community." The renderings stand in opposition to reports from last December that many residents would prefer the reactivation of the defunct railroad, which connected central Queens to central Brooklyn, a dream that was ultimately deemed unattainable. "Past studies have shown conclusively that rail reactivation is not feasible for cost, environmental and logistical reasons," a representative with the group told us at the time. The workshops will be held on Monday, March 24, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School, located at 91-30 Metropolitan Avenue, and on Wednesday, March 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the High School for Construction Trades, Architecture and Engineering, located at 94-06 104th Street.

July 19, 201410 yr I hate all this construction and the High Line is way overcrowded :x, but I went up for Manhattanhenge last week. As you can see from my pictures the whole event was pretty lame. I guess you're supposed to be looking at it from the east down a street more canyon-like than 14th St, or maybe it's just my camera  http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
July 19, 201410 yr whats up around the highline this summer? I'm not going to repost all those wonderful photos and that great highline project information, because, 1) you already posted them; and 2) bandwidth. But thanks once again for these updates. Just great to see all the activity and people being attracted by this.
July 20, 201410 yr ^ yeah it is really something to see all the interest and development action. the highline park cost $115M and generated an estimated $400M by 2009 and $2B in related developments by 2011. thats a pretty good investment to date for sure. *** wait evd hates the construction and its way overcrowded...so he goes to the highline? lol! for next year evd the best place to watch manhattanhenge is the 42nd st tudor city overpass, but you have to get there early because it gets overcrowded. probably construction around too ;) actually ive had the best luck on the westside around 11th ave in the w20s. but of course it really depends on the weather more than anything else. this year it wasnt so good.

January 14, 201510 yr ^ nice. i love that view looking across 23rd street. hadid progress and new signage something new across the street from the highline spur/coach tower
January 15, 201510 yr Thanks for your photo updates over the years. Question -- is the original part of the high line looking worn or dated at all? I haven't been up there since 2011.
January 15, 201510 yr I didn't notice it looking worn or dated at all. My first visit to NYC was right before Phase 2 opened. On my most recent trip I remembered where phase 2 began but it really all seemed to be one continuous park with no noticeable distinction.
January 15, 201510 yr ^ yep no visible distinction between phase I and phase II, but there is a distinction with phase III. that won't be finalized for a long time since its over the railyards mega-construction zone. in fact, a finalized phase III section is very strange to imagine because it will actually be ground level when all is said and done with the railyards developments. i do not notice any wear and tear in the park. they certainly have enough $$$ to fix anything and they are always at it with upkeep. note the spur section will open when the coach tower has been built. its halfway built now, so in a couple years probably. that will completely open all the parts you can walk around on.
June 5, 20169 yr a rundown of a few highline developments: a render of a new 10 story roman&williams designed apt bldg along the highline with green terra cotta and copper windows. santander bank gave them the $57m construction loan. its by the developer of 111 w57st. the late zaha haddid's apt bldg is well along. here are a couple shots i took if it recently. it's starting to get its groovy on. this one is called the getty because its going up on the site of a getty gas station. it's u/c. 505 w19th st, the thomas juul-hansen twins that straddle the highline, which you can see on the above highline walk photos, are selling well. the main entrance to both connects directly under the highline, which is unusual. http://streeteasy.com/building/505-west-19th 551 w21st tower is also well along, if not completed and selling. its by norman foster. the $50m penthouse, in contract, has a nice outdoor pool. http://newyorkyimby.com/2015/03/construction-update-551-west-21st-street-west-chelsea.html 515 highline by singaporean soo k. chan is underway, should be interesting. ^ soo's got another one too, soori highline at 522 w29st those have natatoriums, an unusual feature and lastly for now this a a render of jardim at 527 w27st. it's by isay weinfeld, but i dk much more about it, except its has a concealed private drive bet. w27-28th sts.

June 6, 20169 yr I love this thread. The High Line can offer a wonderful experience if you're there on a non-touristy day (it gets uncomfortably crowded on nice weekends) but the design is amazing. And the amount of super well-designed buildings going up around it is astonishing. Every time I visit it feels different. But with that, my next time there will be as a resident of New York since I move there next week. I can't wait to be able to keep track of these projects from much closer than I have in the past.
June 6, 20169 yr ^Congrats on that jmicha. I hope you keep up with the forum because we always enjoy your commentary and knowledge, though understood it will be from a distance. Hope it is all you hope for there!
June 6, 20169 yr Thanks! And I intend to. I love Ohio and especially love Cincinnati as it has been an amazing home for the last 9 years. I was just ready for a change in scenery/job/residence/etc. and have been daydreaming about moving to NYC since the first time I visited in the summer of 2011. And I got an offer from an amazing firm that basically doubles my income which will allow for me to live comfortably even with the hefty cost of living adjustment. But my transportation+housing costs are actually going down with this move and I'll be living two blocks from Prospect Park which will be incredibly exciting. But I don't want to hijack this awesome thread haha.
June 6, 20169 yr Awesome news! No hijacking, congrats are always in order for a big life change, sounds like it is really going to work out well for you. Cincy will always be here and you may move back at some point, you never know, best of luck!
June 6, 20169 yr I'll definitely be making frequent trips back. I need to make use of my streetcar Founder's Pass when it opens!
January 22, 20178 yr time for a few updates -- i walked home on the highline park this past friday after work first off -- this is looking east at the highline 'spur' on w30st next to/under the coach tower these are a couple tall new residential towers just to the south of hudson yards -- surrounding the coach tower i figured everyone would want to see the progress on hadid's apt bldg hadid will be getting neighbors soon a look back north the getty apt bldg is coming along not sure? down in the meatpacking, this parking is going away for a big apt complex this lot at far w14st will be the solar carve tower they are also knocking down a couple old meatpacking warehouses for it here are a few older pics from the daylight you can see the meat hooks here next to what were the highline freight train rails again from earlier -- this is probably the last open view of the pre-solar carve tower meatpacking warehouse from down on the street the whitney museum -- as i lose the light lastly -- the whitney now has a nice little plaza here at the southern tip of the highline park
January 23, 20178 yr Thanks for the update. That Hadid building looks a million times better than her building here in Cincinnati.
January 23, 20178 yr I also really like that Hadid building. I think I saw one of its units listed at something outlandish like $85mn. NYC real estate boggles my mind. “To an Ohio resident - wherever he lives - some other part of his state seems unreal.”
January 23, 20178 yr The CAC is world's ahead of her work along the High Line. It's just a basic building with some swoopy cladding on it. The interior is nondescript and doesn't carry that same language in any meaningful manner. It's not a great building. It also disregards its context. Which is what happens when you have a holier-than-thou firm working on it. I love what Zaha did for women and minorities in the industry, but her firm is pretentious and offers a lot of work that's only skin deep lately. Her older work felt more important. Her stuff like this? It's throwaway glitzy trendy architecture with no substance.
January 24, 20178 yr i would say the exteriors and interiors of both are opposites. the highline hadid has a slick eurotrashy facade, but clean, standard interiors (albeit some with a few star trek looking designs), while the cac has a classy, modernist and clean exterior, but the inside appears a shambles with its narrowness and those strange flying habitrail staircases (i dk, ive only seen cac in person from the outside, so just going by pics).
January 24, 20178 yr ^ I think the CAC is more cohesive - the interior and exterior are in sync. As you enter the building from the street this is very clear. Part of this is just due to the use of the space - it's a museum and is meant for use by the public. A residential building is never really going to have that same type of atmosphere because it's filled with 100 different residents using their space 100 different ways (or, maybe in the case of this building, 100 wealthy foreigners never using their space - is it "that" type of building?).
January 24, 20178 yr The interior of the CAC is pretty well done. The stairs were designed as ramps but Hadid, again in her firm's holier-than-thou manner, didn't realize you couldn't just have ramps leading from every level. So they made them stairs that were as shallow as possible which are awful. I love the CAC but those stairs are infuriating. Too long to take two at a time but taking one at a time feels tedious since they're so shallow. The rest though is well done. The interior has some really impressive moments. One of them not as intended since, again, Hadid's firm didn't bother looking at code that closely, and the atrium has a glass ceiling above the first floor for smoke and fire protection. What was designed as a large cavernous atrium with ramps leading up from the ground level is broken before reaching the ground but it still offers some really dramatic views inward. The High Line building's interiors started off referencing the swoopy cladding early on (albeit in a superficial way) but each subsequent release of renderings has the interiors less and less in touch with the exterior. Some of the most recent renderings of the "not-the-penthouse" units show NYC standard apartments. Very little distinguishes this building from anything else other than the exterior cladding and fenestration.

May 22, 20178 yr Can't wait for the rumored expansion of the 606/Bloomington trail in Chicago. It's a more restrained version of the High line and not centralized downtown but still a pleasant amenity.

May 25, 20178 yr uh boy, this one time south bronx rails to trails highline project, or should i say lowest of the lowlines, has unfortunately taken a much sadder turn than mere abandonment. moving forward on making it into a park would help, not to mention getting more innovative help for these people: video: http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/city-closes-bronx-spot-heroin-users-shot-open-air-article-1.3193822
April 12, 20187 yr bjarke ingel's big has another interesting twisty twin blockbuster apt bldg complex going up next to the highline -- in what was long a parking lot. its the second waterfront big designed bldg in ny, the other is the striking and odd pyramid/sail apt bldg up the hudson in midtown. more: https://newyorkyimby.com/2018/04/bigs-twisting-towers-at-76-eleventh-avenue-begin-making-an-impact-on-the-chelsea-skyline.html also, the construction in the foreground of the top shot is for 515 w18st, another twin development designed by thomas heatherwick. he's the guy who designed 'the vessel' up the way along the highline in the hudson yards. you will note that they amusingly dont show you any hint of the big development on the left of the render lol. more: http://www.architectmagazine.com/project-gallery/515-w-18th-st_o
July 17, 20186 yr the final section of the highline is taking shape. its the highline spur, which runs along now under the wing of the coach tower on w30th st and terminates over 10th av. historically, it connected to the post office bldg back when it was in use. after we saved it from demolition, the highline park plan for it underwent two changes prior to settling on its current final form. first was the 2012 jeff koons train plan, to dangle a real locomotive engine over it. next was the 2013 bowl plan, which proved to be too elaborate. the final plan is much more conservative. it incorporates all the features people like about the highline park.
July 17, 20186 yr I was pretty disappointed when neither of the original schemes came to fruition. The dangling train, as ridiculous as it is, would have been a huge draw and the bowl would have been a great intimate space away from the noise and pollution of the city. It would have been great. That being said, I'm excited for the spur to be finished. I completely forget, is the plan still to redo what was the 3rd phase when the Hudson yards is complete? I remember hearing most of it was temporary which is why it's far less feature heavy, but can't recall if that was actually the real plan, an outdated version of the plan, etc.
July 17, 20186 yr Good lord the High Line is so f'ing cool. You couldn't ask for a better repurposing of an elevated rail line.
