Posted August 12, 200717 yr The Germanfest changed this year. Carillon Park was charging too much so they moved it to the Fairgrounds. And there is a $2 fee for parking. But it got bigger, with kiddy rides and a larger sales/exhibit area inside the round barn. The Fairgrounds is not my favorite place in Dayton. They did make the best of it, though. The round barn was built in the 1850s, but I think it was rebuilt a few times since, so its sort of like that Ise Shrine in Japan, where you have a wood building of old design that gets rebuilt every so often. The local stein club had some nice displays, but they weren’t selling any steins this time. They did have this interesting thing on the Westerwald steins, from the “Kannebecker Land”. This is the same area Frankfurt a M gets its “Appelwoi” pitchers from. I have a few of these in my stein collection. Food, Music and Dance. They had a folk song sing-along and since I was one of the few people singing someone from the Liederkranz tried to get me to come to their practice… Some views of the County Fairgrounds and from Fairgrounds hill. This is a real hill, not a bluff, meaning it overlooks the flatlands towards UD and south across the old NCR site to the Oakwood hills, as well as downtown and South Park. They really need to move this ag fair to someplace in Montgomery County that still has agriculture, like New Lebanon or Brookville, and redevelop the site for something else. This hill could be a great urban park, with views over the city and surroundings. The lower area were they have that dirt racetrack & parking could be the part that gets developed. They would have to keep that round barn, though.

August 13, 200717 yr Good times! I love the old-time fairgrounds and their old buildings. One of the best in Indiana is at Crown Point (Lake County), in northwestern Indiana. They have lots of big old trees to provide shade, a lake with a swimming beach and some handsome brick buildings that are impeccably maintained.
August 14, 200717 yr I haven't been to the Fairgrounds in a long long time. That last pic is a view you don't see often (or ever really). Looking at it kinda reminds that I've always thought it's weird that there aren't any taller buildings east of Main St. It just abruptly ends. I just like a nice evenly proportioned skyline. Cincy's is a great example.
