After a lovely weekend on the beach, I arrived at brownstone, a little over an hour ago to discover a man asleep on the bottom four steps to house.

In the seven years I've owned my home in Harlem nothing like this has never happen, as the neighborhood is extremely quite.  As I was taking bags out of the car I walk over to the man and say, "excuse me, but you'll need to remove yourself from my steps".  I place a bad opposite him near the step, turn and go back to the car and gather my other items, I notice the man has not moved.  So I looked at him and thought, maybe he doesn't speak English, so I repeat the above in Spanish.  Nothing.  Next I yell, "Aye, get up, I don't care where you go, but you gotta get up outta here!  Move!" in English and Spanish.  Still nothing.

At this point the person who dropped me off gets out the car and we both make a closer inspection.  Looking down we realize the man has a gash on the side of his head.  So I use a towel to shake him and he's rock hard, wet, and has a horrible odor.  At this point I'm freaked, because I realize he's dead. :-o

The weird part about this is, there was not one person on the street, which is unheard of on a hot hazy day in the city.

I call the police and tell them what happened and they came over and I explained what I found.  The ambulance worker think he had a seizure, passed out and hit his head on my steps.

My nerves are shot as I've had roughly 8 cups of coffee in the past hour and I've got to go to the police station to fill out a report once I talk to my lawyer.  To make matters worse, someone stole my urn filled with an evergreen and flowers similar to what was seen in MayDays garden.  Ugh!  Just what I need at the end of a great weekend!

Wow, that's horrible man, on a lot of different levels.  I don't know how I'd react, finding someone like that.

I already have issues dealing with thoughts about death and life in general.

I'm not sure if condolences are appropriate, but whatever is appropriate, I send it your way...

I'm sorry to hear that.  I can only imagine it is traumatic to have something like that happen.

Oy vey!

Very sorry to hear this.  Your nerves must be shot.  Can't even imagine....

Hope you are doing okay, and have support from friends.

geez that is really sad to hear, sounds like an awful accident.

we've had two bodies in front of our building i know of, i found one of them. both were od's.

we also have a terrible intersection (5 way) and my spouse once saw an older lady killed by a bus.

these were years ago tho thankfully, but it stays with you.

Yikes! No honey, what you need is called sixteen ounces (or twenty-two) of happiness:

Sugar, you know I rarely drink and I've never liked beer.  You have one for me.

Yesterday, when I arrived at the crib, someone left one white calla lily on my step.

I don't even want to know who the man or who his family or I'll turn into a blubbering mess.  I just want them to deal with my lawyer, so I won't become emotionally attached.  I know if that happens I'll be a blubbering mess.

I feel horrible that the man died alone on the street and that he was approximately late 40's early 50's.  Shit that too close to my age.

That's really sad. Some people just go completely forgotten in this city. It makes you wonder if he has family, friends, etc ..

My friend had a run in with dead passenger on a subway train once. I think she shook her and realized she was dead.

He had a wallet on him, and I assume he had proper ID.  Once I realized he was dead, I didnt touch him again, we just put the blanket over him until the police showed up.

My guess is he/his family lived close or someone wouldnt have put a flower on my steps.

Gotcha.

You handled it well. :)

You had the composure to write about eloquently about it not long after the event.  I don't think I could have done that--I would've been a mess.

I hope he didn't die anonymous and alone.

It was the coffee!

Coffee?  Coffee is the last thing I'd want when I was jittery and freaked out.  Try bourbon or scotch, neat!

I rarely drink so I don't have alcohol in my house.

And I today my doctor told I was a caffeine addict and that I need to cut coffee out of my diet.  Of course, I told him he was crazy.

Try 5 hour energy, it doesn't make you crash the way coffee does. It doesn't have the best taste but it works immediately.

well I drink approximately 13-15 cups of coffee a day.  I also eat/drink coffee flavored/inspired foods/beverages.

I heart coffee.

13-15 cups a day?!?!? I don't think your heart "hearts" coffee!

I love coffee.  I have coffee from Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Columbia, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Kenya, Sumatra and Tanzania to name a few.  I love dark roasts.

I'll drink a:

Espresso

Espresso Americano

Espresso Lungo (in an emergency)

Espresso Romano (if feeling foo-foo)

Double Espresso

Espresso regular (AKA Flat white)

Freddo (AKA chilled espresso)

Latte

Cappuccino

Macchiato

I don't like mocha though.

I'm less likely to have

Parkinson's disease

heart disease

diabetes

liver or Kidney problems

Although I rarely blink, these days.

ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

DAAYUM!

Quitting coffee was harder for me than quitting smoking after 10+ years..

What, no pictures of the dead guy?

At this point, I'm not even sure you should stop. It might be keeping you alive.

I'd be telling him I felt an overwhelming urge to stab him in the eye with a rusty serrated knife, but that's just me.

He's just my temporary NY doctor, not my regular doctor, I had to use him to followup on my fractured ribs injury that happened in Feb.  So I'm just humoring him.

Jax, I know your joking, but it wasn't pretty.  I wasn't even thinking about pictures.  I was just thinking, why is this guy sleep on my steps.  He was casually dressed, and did not appear to be drunk, homeless, or drug user - he looked like a regular guy.  I just wanted him off my damn steps!

I've been drinking coffee for 25 years.  I am not a quitter!  I too much invested in beans, coffee machines, and other coffee paraphernalia, to throw it all away.

You're probably right! (as I sip on cup number 5 so far today!)

Don't you folks know, know MyTwoSense is Martha Stewart/Bree VanDeKamp?  No matter how bad the situation, everything is happy-go-lucky.

When I was informed as to what took place, I went around to MTS, house.  When I got there, MTS was white as a ghost and guzzling coffee.  MTS took a lot of care to wrap the man up with dignity.  I don't think I could have touched a dead body.  He wrapped the man in a blanket that was probably the finest blanket he's ever had against his body - the irony is the man never got to enjoy it.

When the police showed up, MTS disappeared, ala bat girl, and reappeared at the front door with coffee, tea, crudités, sliced fruit, bottled water and hot towels for the police and paramedics and thanked them for working so hard and doing such a fine job to protect & serve the citizens of NYC.  Welcome to Stepford!

If I would have found a dead man in the condition that guy was in, I would have needed to be sedated!

The funny thing about this is, nobody knows or is talking about it.  We have a couple of Senior homes in the area and they usually see/hear everything and people claim to have not see anything.

All this coffee talk has made me sleepy.

FHTH....That was hateful!  LOL

I didn't want the police to think I killed the man.  Food always puts people at ease.  Thats why I changed into a white shirt to  reinforced my innocence.  Its all about image (brand) management!

Sorry to hear about this incident MTS.

I still don't get this love of coffee though.  yuck :-P

No prob. I think I'm over the initial shock, as I'd never seen a dead body before.

Man, you need to get with coffee.  I'm sipping on my second cup today!  However, I can understand, as I don't get brown Liquor or beer.
