After the park becomes a reality, longer term, the City should focus on

- relocating Greyhound out of the area

- addressing security at the Allerton Apartments (Parkview Aptmts)

I don't know about the first item you listed, but they should focus on that second item right away.

Does anyone know if Parkworks take project-based donations? I know that you can make a general pledge to the organization, but I'm wondering if there's any opportunity for small donations for particular projects (Public Square, Perk, etc.).

Yeah, their rent-a-cop just stands around and does nothing......

Before the city invests dwindling tax dollars, I think the Allerton should be held accountable and really address their screening process of potential tenants.  But that's just my opinion.

I thought they were going to keep Parkview as "low-income" but limit it to Senoir Citizens.  Am I mixing it up with another building?  If not, whay happened to that plan?

I think that was the plan.  But they also said that about Winton Manor and that clearly isn't just senior citizens anymore.  I believe that the stated issue is that senior citizens often bring in children and grandchildren to live with them for periods of time.

Yup.  The only people that ever irk me from the Bohn building (E. 13th and Superior CMHA senior housing) are the relatives of the residents.  I've talked to quite a few of the residents themselves when I'm doing yard work or out and about - very nice people.  Their visitors, on the other hand......

I saw them working away today on the park. When is it supposed to be finished?

IIRC, spring 2011.  I think the information is in an earlier post.

Phase 1 should be completed by this fall, Phase 2 by spring 2011.  Funding for Phase 2 is not secured yet, dependant on the completion of the sale of the CC.  I think Phase 2 includes a lot more of the interesting aspects of the park, Fountian, seating, and such.

Okay thanks. I was wondering why it would take so long

Progress being made...

I hope we don't lose those trees.

I hope we don't lose those trees.

Same thought.  Some of the best green spaces on the East Coast have towering, mature trees.

those trees are staying.

Good... that's half the battle, really.

those trees are staying.

Plus they've already planted some new ones.

Amen!

Are they supposed to have this open for the summer?  Looks like it will be ready just in time for the cold weather.

But that sale has now been finalized, correct?

^there are some hoops to jump through before proceeds of the sale can be allocated for the park. Additionally, I don't think that cc sale is finalized. I think the agreement to sell it is finalized. Kind of like when you sign the contract to sell a house and you don't close on it for 60 days.

Work seems to have ground to a halt here over the last few weeks.  Anyone know when Phase I is supposed to wrap up.  I thought there was supposed to be a fall opening.  It would be nice to enjoy for the 2 or 3 weeks of decent weather we have left.

Fall opening was never part of the plan. All work is proceeding as scheduled. The park should be complete next spring.

From Steven Litt's article back in March:  "The nonprofit organization ParkWorks, which is managing the project, hopes to complete Phase 1 by fall. This would establish the bones of the plan, which look solid, but would lack amenities including furniture."

^Yes, but since that time they've secured funding for phase 2.

Well that would explain why they've apparently decided to just knock things off for the moment and keep the site fenced off.  It's just irritating when folks tell you a fall completion was "never part of the plan," when in fact it was at one time anticipated.  :whip:

Uh... I believe 3231 was saying that a fall "opening" was never part of the plan.  Completion of phase 1 and "opening" are two different things.

Thanks!  Looks great!

SUCH AN IMPROVEMENT!!!

I drove by Perk Park yesterday evening and looks like it's still under construction.  It actually doesnt look much different than the pics posted above from 10-13-10.  Does anyone know if the park is currently being worked on or have a timeline on when the construction, etc will be completed??  I'm hoping that it just stopped because of the winter weather and there werent some other issues that caused things to stop.

Phase 2 should be starting up sometime in the next month or so with completion in early fall.

Thanks 3231!!!  Glad to hear that things will be starting back up there soon.  It's gonna be nice back there with all the construction/improvements that they've done in that area.

Does Phase 2 still include seating, picnic tables, trellises and a play area with water jets? (got all that from a Litt article up thread).

That is the plan.

I like everything about this park except it's name.  Cleveland is getting ridiculous about naming parks after politicians, known & unknown, living & dead, notable or not....

Ralph Perk, Mercedes Cotner, Kenneth Johnson....

Ken Johnson even has city landscapng equipment named after him.

There aren't any big corporations over their that could buy naming rights are there?

Has anyone noticed work starting up again on the park??  The handful of times I've been by the area its either been the weekend or late in the evening.  It doesnt look like much more has been completed, but just figured that I'd check to see if someone sees the area during the day??  Thanks.

^See the above posts. Work should be starting up in the next few weeks.

Thanks 3231, I saw the post from Mid March saying that construction was supposed to start in the next month or so.  But it's been approximately a month and I was just wondering if the construction had actually started yet because I havnt been able to see the site during the day.  Just thought someone that worked in the area, etc would know for sure.

I go by there everyday, no work yet. I'm sure we'll be commenting on it when it does start.

Just wanted to confirm that work started back up last week. Looks like a 8-10 man crew, currently working on the Walnut St. side of the park. Will post pictures later tonight.

^Thanks for the update

Sweet!

I noticed that on the city planning commission agenda  from May 20 there was some review of the phase 2 plans.  Does anyone know the outcome?

DF 2009-006: 1730 East 12th Street, at Chester Avenue, Perk Plaza Rehabilitation, Phase 2 Furnishings, Final Approval, Ward 3

Project Representatives:  Jim McKnight, Landscape Architect; Joel Wimbiscus, ParkWorks

Sounds like benches, garbage cans, etc.

Oh I wouldn't trust those two guys any further than I could throw them! ;-)
