How am I the only one that noticed they've taken down the construction fence? I don't know if they've completely finished with all the details, but no one seemed upset when I sat on a bench.

(Sorry no photos, my 3 year old figured out how to break the lens on my phone.)

The fence went down today. There is a small ceremonial opening on Monday even though the project completion date isn't until the end of the year. The red trellis "roofing" fins should go in sometime in mid to late December.

I assumed something was going up there. I think the seats under the trellis just went up in the last day or two.

Some images from the re-dedication this afternoon...

That's a good-looking park in a very urban setting. I like it. Is there any programming considered for the park, such as Christmas/holiday activities/ighting, Easter-egg hunts, lunch-time concerts in warmer weather, etc. etc that will give people more of a reason to discover/visit the park?

what a gorgeous improvement! I am very happy with how good this looks. Going to take a look in person this weekend (If I can.. home for turkey day!)

Wow what a transformation!  NICE!

The pictures won't load for me. Just red Xs. Anyone else have this issue? i'd like to take a look.

Same problem here too!

I like it.

Is the black, non-masonry looking portion of the ground a permeable surface?

Kids, picks are showing for me.  Try refreshing your browsers or restarting your devices.

I can't get them either. Tried refreshing, tried right clicking on the 'x's and selecting download picture. Nothing. I'll try at home.

For those that get red x's, like me, here's a link to the photobucket account.  http://s886.photobucket.com/albums/ac63/curban37/Perk%20Park/

I drove by on Saturday night and this park looks amazing at night.  The lighting is top notch.  I'm really pleased with how the park came out.

I like it.

Yes. It is a crushed, black cinder-like material.

They were in the sunken PNC plaza off Vincent this past summer, hopefully they will move over to Perk as I think that will be a much better venue.

The park looks amazing.  Hope it can spark some residential adaptive reuse of the vacant office buildings in the 9/12 area.

Party in the Perk...

That is a GREAT looking park!

  • 2 weeks later...

very very sharp thx for the photos.

and they kept chester commons -- perk park at chester commons -- yay!

AMAZING park and it kind of answers the downtown residents request for more/better green space it looks so modern and urban and fits in well with the setting (now public square needs to be re done) Only sad part is the redevelopment only picked up steam basically after a murder  :| but regardless still beautiful!!

I hope they keep it maintained.

Just walked by it myself on my way to the Greyhound station. Only wish it were here during the warm weather, but I'll have plenty of years to enjoy this kickass space!

I'm not quite as impressed as others with the finished product.  The mounds seem anything but organic, there's too much concrete, and what is the deal with all that metal frame stuff?  Will it eventually have walls and roofs?  Vines perhaps?  That's what trellises are typically built for.  The original rendering shows roofs, but when I stopped there last week there were no roofs and all the chairs had standing water on them.

I'm not a fan of the hills either, but otherwise I like the design.  The hills seem to belie they notion that they were trying to eliminate hidden spaces through the park, and they get in the way of using the green lawns for things like frisbee or throwing/kicking around a ball.

I think the hills are more for sitting/lounging on than playing on. I agree they don't look organic, but I like them.

Lots of places to sit/lounge Downtown.  Not many to throw a frisbee.  The Mall was the best, that's gone too.

The metal frame trellis which with you mention will get red fins installed as shade devices.  They supposedly will be installed in January

Will these fins be rain/snow resistant?  Shade is a smart priority for a place like Bakersfield.

:shoot: That is not an attractive design....maybe it will look better in person  :?

I just read the last 5 pages of this thread.  Not clear if the total cost here is 1.6 million, or 1.6 million per phase.  For that kind of money it's a shame we can't get roofs on the shelters or the fountain that was originally planned.  Based on renderings alone, I had thought those mounds were the park's best feature.  Having seen it in real life now, I think the fountain would have been the best feature.  But there is no fountain.

Those kind of shelters will not be adequately maintained and will look crappy in a few short years.... my prediction.

They've added a few new seats this week. They look like concrete lounge chairs. I'm not a fan of the design, but I do like that they a few more seats. (I tried taking a couple pics, but my cell phone camera is horrible so I'm not going to bother posting them.)

I drove by at night for the first time the other day and it looked fantastic all lit up.  Very warm and inviting.

With Cleveland winds, especially downtown would a roof really provide more climate control?  I think this city needs more things that celebrate the beautiful sunny days that occasionally pop up in the Cleve.

Slats are up today on the trellis.

Sweetie, I think you've drunk too much moonshine as I don't understand what you mean by the above?  Are you insinuating that we dont have lots of sunshine here in Cleveland?

I hope your being facetious in your writing.

I saw the red shelter up today. I like it. Adds life and color to the area. Should look even better during the summer!

^Looks great!

Amen!  The photos on the Land Studio FB page really show how vivid that red shows, especially this time of year.  Would love to see more of that.

Agreed!

^ Also agree! That red accent provides exactly the kind of vibrant colors that downtown needs.

Think London and Dublin IRL;  cities in gloomy northern climates where very colorful storefronts improve the aesthetic.

awww yeah...ditto to those sentiments! the color really grabs you and looks inviting - and in what is so often a rarity it amazingly all looks exactly like the renders - congrats to the architects and builders they did good work.

I passed it last night. I think the park looks fantastic. And yes, the red really looks spectacular.

agreed. This park is well done.  Kudos to all involved in its creation.

The red looks great, but to truly appreciate it, catch it when the sun is out ... It's amazing how much light these capture and the glow it gives them. Very nicely done, particularly when you look back a few pages at the park they replaced.

I hope all the materials they use hold up to the weather.  I've seen so many examples of materials breaking down, such as new railing that a year later show rust streaks on the ground.  Even the shiny new exterior of the CSU student center has (non rust) streaks on it.  I don't know if it's using the wrong materials, installing them incorrectly or lack of upkeep, but I hope it doesn't happen here.

I walked by the other day and noticed that the roofs seem to serve only one purpose, visual, they obviously cant keep you from the elements... I thought that would be a great place to sit for a while during a nice rain and just relax, but it looks like the designers had a different idea.
